About The Man with The Handgun Shoots John in the Face.

I love two person plays. Waiting for Godot was and interesting read, and a certain one act that I saw recently had a similar style and attracted me to the subgenre. The very concept of this piece is one that would make Rod Serling proud. The way it was executed was excellent. I'm struggling to find appropriate adjectives to describe it, but perhaps if I worded my thoughts this way they'd be understandable. The words of the piece should remain on the page, that is, attempting to visualize the scenario seems to detract from its artistic value. What I got out of it is a more abstract general concept with the characters simply playing out their roles as hypotheticals in a hypothetical universe, stand ins for a more general representation of conflict. The anticlimactic ending was the perfect signature for the absurdity the rest of the piece depicted.

There's just one line that's bugging me

quote:

-Man with the handgun-
The class is on page eight, John.

Maybe I missed something here, but this line doesn't seem to fit into any interpretation I could make for the story. It seems to be a random sentence just plastered in between John's words. Perhaps that's its purpose, but since the rest of the man with the handgun's responses were relatively logical, this line didn't seem to fit.

As in he's revisiting a topic that they have already discussed.
He's asking a question about page three, while the rest of the class is on page eight.
