Ashari -> Quote Button (7/12/2010 21:05:58)

One of the major things that this forum is missing is a quote button above each person's post. Its extremely useful if you need to answer someone or direct your post to a previous post in the thread.

The current quoting system requires that you copy the posts text manually, then pasting it between two
[quote][/quote]
tags. The quoting function doesn't even have the ability to show whose post was quoted (usually done by [quote=<username>]) in most other forums.

The reply button remains above each post despite its limited usefulness, it should really be a quote button instead.

We used to have a quote button but it was removed because of the excessive spam it generated in the form of quote pyramids (having several quote tags nested within each other so that you get a quote within a quote within a quote). Having to manually copy and paste the stuff you're going to quote cuts away the spam and also generally leads users to use the quote function more effectively (quoting a specific section of the post they want to respond to instead of quoting the entire post).

There was a quote button, but due to abuse (and spam) of the function. Seeing how it was when we had a button, I believe the staff won't implement it again. There was a very similar thread a few pages ago ( here it is), which was addressed by Chii:

The sheer amount of abuse of that function, when it existed, led to its removal. Huge amounts of spam. Made discussion pages laggy and difficult to nagivate just who was saying what. People would quote posts they weren't even replying to. So on and so forth.

About the quote pyramids: I know phpBB forums have settings that allows control of things such as nesting quotes. In phpBB you could set the nested quote limit to 0 (no quoting within a quote).

I'm not sure if aspplayground software has such settings, but if it does, it should really be looked into.

I assume that the [quote=...] function is tied into the quote button functionality as well.

A function does exist where you can respond to a specific post without manually adding quote tags, in any case. If you Reply to a specific post by clicking this button in the top right-hand corner of a post: [img]http://forums2.battleon.com/f/image/replyflat1.gif[/img], rather than using the Post Reply button when viewing a thread, you can quote the original post that you'd like to respond to; there's a "Quote original" button in the Reply to Message window, under color and next to the Privacy Policy link.

This method, as stated above, helps cut down on huge quote pyramids, while also carrying over any coding the first member may have included in a post, which is sometimes useful.

I can't say I quite agree with a no nesting functionality, as sometimes it's important to have that ability.
