Sir Lunis -> A rule against "Versus threads" (7/21/2010 11:50:13)

A long time ago, towards the beginning of Dragonfable, there was an open forum section for polling. It entailed a great accumulation of thought and democracy. Then as time went on, it degraded into "Undead Chuck Norris versus a Cysero-Artix hybrid" (that one was my fault). As such the forum was deleted. As a result people have started posting versus threads into the GD forums. I find it quite annoying, and it is usually a source of flaming, trolling, and spam. So after deep thought I believe that a rule against versus threads should be instituted for the following reasons:

1. There is no result, because no matter what we, the players do it comes down to opinion.

2. It leads to forum wars such as Members vs nonmembers, J6 versus Miltonius, Tomix versus the waterblobbie, etc.

3. These all stemmed from the _____Defender's threads

4. There are so many, that truly constructive discussions are shot down in their prime.

If there is a rule already instituted, then this thread isn't necessary. But I haven't seen one, so I think this needs to be brought up

Barring that, a universal versus thread set up in each part of the forums to stem the creation of such threads.

Hm, I could see a universal versus thread working in AEGD.

Or maybe a thread that covers all the versus.

DF has alot of threads when to many disscusions are made. Versus threads like, =DF= ? versus ?., =AQW= ? versus ?

A "universal versus thread" could easily become spammy as well—Sir Lunis' first point being the reason—and if strict rules are set to avoid spam, most likely there won't be an actual discussion but something like the old "Battle Royale" thread in the OOC (one member posts "A vs. B, which is <…>" and the next member posts an answer).

I believe what can be done is putting "A vs. B" threads on probation, just like how topics on religion is/was on probation in the OOC, and allowing it again when the forum members can discuss such topics civilly again (e.g. after the Waterblobby craze haa died down). Whether such a measure is necessary is up to LANDIS to determine.
