Khimera -> AQ Suggestions - Suggestions Help (7/22/2010 20:05:57)

As it is, AQ Suggestions is rather dead compared to a few years ago, and there are a few good reasons for this, such as the Dev. Team doing excellent work and not leaving much room for original concepts. However, a lot of potentially good ideas are shot down due to them being infeasible, or the poster being inarticulate or not having a good understanding of the games mechanisms. This results in a lot of locked threads, and ideas are hard to fully develop as collaborative threads aren't allowed. This leaves the vast majority of ideas either unable to develop, poorly constructed, blatantly against the rules, or just impossible to implement, with the KoO (particularly Chii) having to go through the posts which is, ultimately, a waste of time.

My suggestion is for a sub-forum called "Suggestions Help", which would be an optional place for people to post their unformed ideas with slightly looser rules, allowing normal members to reply explaining why their suggestion wouldn't work, or perhaps even that it's a good idea to be posted in the actual Suggestions board. It would also allow collaborative threads for people to work together freely on ideas, and perhaps organising projects to put together some well thought out suggestions - the type of effort that the KoO often ask for in suggestions. As good/fully formed ideas would be prompted to be re-posted in AQ Suggestions, it wouldn't require the KoO (who are very busy at the best of times) to go through all of the posts, and therefore AK's (or the SoO) could be appointed to note where rules are broke (such as FSI's) and lock if necessary (although hopefully only for severe cases of spam and such, as alerting a poster to an FSI would allow them to change their idea or to request a lock/delete, and locking upon sight can be rather rash and hostile - one of the reasons some people may not have the confidence to post their ideas currently.)

Thanks for your time, and I hope the idea is at least considered ^_^

Overall, I'm not sure I see the merit of a new board for this. How is it different from what happens (or can happen) in the AQ Suggestions board already? If the idea doesn't work it doesn't work, relaxing the rules doesn't change that at all, and you can still explain to the user what's wrong with it in the main board as things stand and help them fix the problems if they can be fixed.

Threads get locked or deleted when the only idea or ideas contained in them violate the board's rules (most commonly the Frequently Suggested Ideas sticky) as a means of prompting users to read those rules before attempting a new suggestion. Leaving the thread open and just telling them how to get around the rule they violated is unlikely to accomplish this.

It wouldn't just serve to tell people that their idea is against the rules. Odds are, if they don't read the rules, they won't post in a sub-forum designed to help them. But, for instance, a person could have an idea for a class, which is a nice, original concept that could work, but only has 4 fully formed skills. Now, they could come up with 6 filler skills, but that would detract from the good parts, and they can't post a class with 4 skills as you have to post complete suggestions. That's a case in which posting in the sub-forum would be appropriate.

The same could apply for things such as mastercraft sets, quest chains... etc. It would also open up the capacity for projects to develop, which could have great potential. The reason for it being a sub-forum is so that it is distinguished from the stricter AQ Suggestions forum which would be for ideas that have already been developed, and which the KoO would look at.

We don't usually lock threads for not being complete, though, unless several days elapse with no sign of the suggestion being updated despite users bumping it several times to discuss its theoretical concepts.

The only real benefit of a subforum to this purpose that I can see is that people would theoretically be able to publically discuss their collaborations, rather than doing so in PM. There's already a certain degree of leeway for public discussion, though, as long as it's obviously building on the idea, rather than just bumping the thread to ask for more advice. That's all I really see happening in a subforum -- "More feedback plz."

Khimera -> RE: AQ Suggestions - Suggestions Help (7/22/2010 22:36:59)

Perhaps something could be worked into the existing forum? It isn't very collaboration friendly, because people can't just say "Here's a rough idea, let's build upon it.", whereas in the sub forum it would be possible, and it would also remove the threads such as that from AQ Suggestions so that you only have to deal with the threads with actual ideas to present. I think the main points would be to open up more collaborations and to take some of the work from the KoO.

Edit: I've spoken to Chii, this can be locked.

Issue addressed. Lock requested.

I'm sorry for the delay, must have gotten by someone. :)
