Dragon Slayer096 -> Appreciation? (10/10/2010 2:48:33)

Is it possible for the forum to add an appreciation option to player profiles?
Every player can give positive appreciation to someone who makes a good post, and negative for people who make bad ones.
This could stop flame wars, and spamming, and would give a competitive element to the forums.
Also, there should be a limit to the amount of appreciation that can be handed to others and a person cannot rep another person multiple times without giving appreciation points to about 3-5 people.
People with more appreciation would be able to give more points (and deduct more too), while people with less points can give and take less points.

If it's possible to incorporate this in a forum like this, I would like to see it happen. Obviously a poll will be needed to decide whether other forum members are OK with the idea if it is possible. I have seen this on other forums, and it's quite a cool thing to have.

I think it would enhance the complete opposite, It would increase the amount of flame wars, the spamming of the giving of 'Appreciation' would be excessive and the Forums themselves are not meant to be competitive.

Flame Wars would happen due to the massive amount of bias that could occur, one person could get his/her own friends to vote for themselves and boost their own position in the system. And others would find that unfair and might feel compelled to complain. Your idea of limiting the giving of the Points to 3-5 people would slow the process but with everyone giving each pother Points it is still a problem.

The Forums are supposed to be an environment where people can feel free to express themselves and their ideas. Adding a competitive element such as this to the equation would create more problems than solve them. There are ways of 'competing' within the Forums, the Official Contests are an example of this.

This would create a hierarchy pretty much based on how popular the the respective person is. The more popular the he/she is the better off they are within the community. This would mean unfairness and so, would not be providing an equal opportunity to other members. It would mean that you could control the system by first, getting a group of people to all give you 'Points' with a promise to give them larger amount of 'Points' when you are higher up the Chain. You repeat the process for any person within the Forums, and you will get to a point where there will be half the people on one end of the spectrum while the other half are on the 'Negative' side. You would have the power, to 'downgrade' anyone you wish with the push of a button.

I do apologize if this post does seem overly negative, I believe that this suggestion would cause more harm than good. =/

A system similar to this was implemented before, with a slightly different form. It was discontinued due to the problems of a rating system, and almost certainly will never be implemented again.

The likelihood of abuse of such a system is high, as there would be no oversight beyond what each member is thinking at any given second. And it's not feasible to introduce a system with a way for the forum staff to oversee each post rating, as it would require immense amounts of time sifting through each post to ascertain the legitimacy of each rating.

I'm actually very happy that you believe it would help stop flame wars, it speaks well of you, but in my experience, not all forum members would use such a system with intentions as good as yours.
