Mark Chung -> AQ Suggestions Thread (11/1/2010 22:13:12)

Hi everyone, thanks for viewing this post.

After being in AQ suggestions thread for a while, I have noticed a rule that is considered necessary, but could be a burden to potential writers, like me. Quoting AQ Suggestions Board: Information & Rules [Updated 17Sep10] ,

quote:

1) One thread per user:
Each forum account may have a single thread. When you are inspired to post new ideas, use an existing thread of your own to post them in, rather than making new threads for every new idea. Under no circumstances should you have more than one open thread at a time, and that includes older threads you have posted long in the past. If your thread is locked for any reason other than archival purposes, you may post a new one, but you are not permitted to repost the suggestions from the old thread.

You may not make a new thread if you already have one on the board. We are generally nice enough to merge them together and give you a couple of warnings. We can, and will however - especially if you have already received your one or two warnings - delete extra threads on sight. Keep that in mind, lest your hard work quickly go to waste.

It is very understandable that this rule is created to prevent thread spamming, and to put a halt to the situation of "Ooh~ I have a very rough idea of a new weapon!" *clicks New Thread - semi-complete post*, then "Ooh~ I have a very rough idea of a new shield!" *clicks New Thread - semi-complete post* and more.

However, this rule can be a very heavy burden for god writers. When a user is limited to only ONE thread, they have to post everything inside it, usually within a single post for the sake of readers, which makes that particular post very lengthy. For example, I personally wanted to make a quest chain consisting of 8 separate quests, featuring rewards in each quest. However, doing so will be a immensely huge burden to both writers and readers.

Writers
We cannot expect a writer to finish all their suggestions in one single post, unless they do it gradually. However, doing this may lead to a very severe strain to writers. Why? Usually, when we write a quest, we tend to to it nicely (this is our work, after all). Thus, we often use BB codes provided on top. The major problem occurs when the post becomes too long and when we try to use BB codes at the same time. Every single time we use the BB code , the screen will shift to the top part of the post. Writers have to scroll down to find the way back to the point where they left. This condition is worsened when it comes to proofreading. When we try to edit something that is in the MIDDLE of the post, and the screen jumps to the top, we can't scroll down to the very bottom like usual - instead, we have to spend a very long time to search where we originally left. This is very time-consuming and rather unpleasant. An endless repetition of these will soon break a writer's will to write and contribute.

Readers
For a casual reader and critic, people tend to do whatever they can to contribute to improve a suggestion. However, when a suggestion becomes too long (e.g. 8 quests + 24 new monsters + 8 weapons of 8 versions (8*8 = 64) + 8 shields of 8 versions (8*8 = 64) + other things), it will become more of a pain than a pleasure to read and comment. Thus, they often do not know where to start. Even if they really to comment, some things will be left out when they selectively comment on items. For example,

quote:

Suggestion
A
B
C
D
E
F
G
H

Comment 1
A is good.
C needs a buff.
F is an FSI.

Comment 2
Wow! A is awesome! It needs a minor nerf to the BtH though.
G and H is good, although it is a bit expensive.
C definitely needs a buff.

Comment 3
D is interesting!
The SP upkeep of E should be adjusted.
H should have a turn cost.

Comment 4
E should be a bit more expensive.
H needs a BtH buff.
A little buff for the special rate of G should be nice.

Where is B? Forgotten?

My Simple Suggestion

Why not making a sub-thread in the AQ Suggestions section? Split them into - General Suggestions, Quest, Monster, Armors, Weapons, Shields, Miscs and Pets. There, Rule 1 can be implemented into each thread. Consecutive posting should ONLY be allowed by the starter of the thread of the Quest Suggestions thread strictly, under the condition of

No user's post between your consecutive posts. If someone posts, nobody, including the writer himself, is allowed to make consecutve posts. This is to make quest chains easier to make.

Thank you, and feel free to voice your opinions.

~Mark

I can definitely tell you that checking eight forums would be a lot harder on staff than checking one thread. Having eight separate forums is also not very likely to increase the odds of getting useful feedback.

If organization or formatting is an issue, one idea is to use google documents to separate large suggestions and then link to them within the thread. I definitely prefer reading those than the feeling when I notice that a person has over thirty separate threads, each containing one suggestion and no acknowledgement of feedback.

As far as BBCode jumping you back to the top of the post, this is a browser-specific issue not a forum feature. Firefox Users can install the BBCodeXtra add-on to add needed formatting without the hassle of having to scroll all the way back down the post every time.

Or just type the coding, give the old right pinky a little exercise. ^^;;

(Personally, I can sympathize with being lazy and using the buttons. I broke my right pinky knuckle at one point and I don't use it for much besides semi-colons and the backspace key.)
