Is copying ideas from another person forbidden on the forums?

Postmaster General -> RE: Um... (11/7/2010 12:59:47)

In what instance? According to the =AE= Comprehensive Forum Rules:

quote:

Do not impersonate other users, post for anyone other than yourself or claim ownership of what is not yours.

Impersonation of any kind, be it a staff member, another forum user or anyone that you're not is strictly prohibited. This extends to plagiarism; posting something that is not yours and representing it as your work is not allowed and will result in consequences beyond the norm.

Posting for another user is also not allowed - specifically, you may not post for a banned forum member under any circumstances. Users that are banned from the AE Forums receive correspondence that gives them a staff member as a point of contact as well as a link to the help pages as a means of appeal. Therefore, there is never any circumstance under which posting on the forums for a banned user should be necessary. If you are unsure as to whether your action violates the rules, please feel free to PM a forum moderator.

If, for example, it were art in the Creative Arts board, and you wished to redo someone else's art. You would need the artist's express permission and clearly label that as so.

"or claim ownership of what is not yours."
ok thanks :p

However, from the AQ Suggestions rules, which you should have checked-

quote:

Generic ideas are not copyrighted and are not considered stolen material whether it has been seen in other suggestion threads or in a media resource. In some cases, an idea is already planned for use by Artix Entertainment, and although you are welcome to post your own example of these ideas, be aware that your thread may only be used for inspiration toward an idea already in progress or disregarded in entirity.

You can't claim ownership over the concept of birthdays.

But it's still not fair, Chii...

Alpha Atom -> RE: Um... (11/7/2010 13:22:13)

Actually... if it's just the idea you're copying, it shouldn't be too much of a problem, see this:

quote:

Also note that "you stole my idea" posts will be deleted on site. Unless you have proof that your idea is protected by a patent, you have no case. You did not invent art, and someone has more than likely had the idea before you, therefore you cannot claim any idea your own, only the product of your ideas.

Unless a person has an actual copyright on that idea, you are free to copy it. But only the idea, if you use any of their actual work, it becomes ripping.

Stolen ideas :|

Vivi -> RE: Um... (11/7/2010 13:31:32)

The only similarity between the two ideas in question is that they celebrate a birthday. The similarities end there, and you don't own the idea of celebrating a birthday. If other users have different ideas on how they would want to see a birthday celebrated in the games nothing stops them from suggesting those.

The issue's been addressed, if you disagree with the decision made appeals should be made privately via PM as outlined in the forum's Comprehensive Rules:

quote:

The determination as to whether the content of a post constitues things like flaming, trolling, spam, etc. lies with the mod or AK in question, not the users. However, if you have issues with the decisions or actions of a member of forum staff, there is one acceptable manner of appeal and that is to follow the chain of command, as defined below.

For an ArchKnight, you send them a PM in an attempt to resolve the issue privately. You do not post about it in a thread. Any public posts about an AK's decisions will be removed and warned as trolling. If you are unable to privately resolve your issue, you may contact the head moderator of the forum in question. See the Forum Staff or Staff Assistants list to determine whom to contact. If you are unable to resolve your issue with the head moderator of the forum, you may contact the Head of the ArchKnights. If the AK Administrator cannot resolve your issue, you may contact the Head Administrator of the Forums. The Head Admin's word is final.

For a Moderator or an Administrator, you send them a PM in an attempt to resolve the issue privately. Like with the AKs, any public posts about a moderator or administrator's actions will be removed and warned as trolling. If you are unable to resolve your issue with them in private, you may take it to the Head Administrator. The Head Admin's word is final.
