I'd suggest making a base that is quite large (500 x 500 or so?) So you can work in more detail and it's a bigger canvas. After that, you could resize it to the size the requester specifies (95 x 95 for an avatar, 200 x 200 for a twitter picture, etc.)

What do you mean? I know it's impossible for a 500 x 500 file to become an 80 x 76 file (Just an example) BUT you can get it as close as possible to that while keeping the square size (which in this example, would be 76 x 76). The size difference would be too minuscule for it to matter, unless it is an obscure size for a plushie (500 x 100).
