sturm the dark -> Rules for your own thread? (two questions) (1/2/2011 8:22:12)

This has always been a grey area for me. I've read the rules (universal and forum-specific), and as far as I know there's nothing about this.

I've seen many discussion threads where the creator says things like: "Please keep to the rules - no trolling, flaming or mem vs. non-mem discussion." Personally, I don't see a problem with that, as long as it is in the official rules. In actual fact, I think it's very effective at keeping order in discussion.

But here are my two questions:

  • Are you allowed to re-enforce the rules in your own thread, and
  • Are you allowed to 'create your own rules?'

With the second one, I mean that can you (for example) say: "Can you please use this posting format" or "Do not address any other posts in this thread"?

I'm guessing the mods/AKs are the only ones with any info about this, but ANY info from ANY member would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I see a fair amount of people do it in their first post, it could be just as a reminder though as everybody may not read the rules that are stickied. Personally i do not see an issue with this, but in same cases it could be seen as Mini Modding.

I'm not sure if you can really create your own rules, as they are all pretty much in the stickies. That's my 2 cents.

The only forum I can think members can create rules for their threads would be Unofficial Contests and Games, and that's because the member is actually making the game to be played in the thread. And even with that, there is an approval process the member must undergo before his game can be played by others. Generally speaking, no, we do not encourage members to be making their own rules, as it will likely turn into mini-modding at some point or another. Even if innocent at first, reminders could become belligerent, and it's really best for the forum staff to handle such things.

This same problem prohibits a re-enforcing of rules by members as well. If you see rule-breaking in a thread, you should never attempt to deal with the issue yourself. Instead, please PM an ArchKnight of the section, or failing that, an online Moderator.

If you wanted to create a thread that required a specific format or something similar, you should really speak to the head of the forum section before doing so. Then you can work out any details before the thread actually goes live, and avoid any problems.
