what is the point on locking threads

Threads get locked when the needed information has been provided and the thread no longer needs to stay open (such as Q&A threads) When General Discussion threads reach 10 pages (untagged) or 30 pages (tagged officially by an AK or Moderator.) Or when a topic does not belong where it has been posted and has several answers already, is sometimes the case.
