Lately, almost everyone is using various colored text in different fonts and styles, centered and wahtnot. I thiought that level of obnoxiousness was reserved for Mods/AKs and normal users were not suppsoed to do it?

To my knowledge if the text effects are too extreme on the eyes (neon colours etc) then it'll be edited out. Using dull colours such as this for example, should be ok. Normally yes it would be reserved for AK/Mod edits and alike. The other reason being, there's not a lot of times when a member will need to colour text which is why it isn't too good to do so.

Members can use colored text as long as it doesn't unnecessarily distract from the content of the post. Including multiple colors for each new word of a post, for instance. If you believe a member is using color edits too frequently, and it distracts you, you can always PM an AK of the section or a moderator and we would happily look into it.

And though you may not have meant it this way, I would remind you that the forum staff uses colored posts for a specific purpose. Not to simply be obnoxious. :P

Mods and AKs usually only use their official colour when editing someone's post to remove rule breaking content or making a post to address an issue that seems to be threatening a thread. Otherwise, we use the normal black colour with typical font.

As long as a member does not use overly bright or light font, which is hard to read and can hurt people's eyes, it is not a problem. Many users incorporate their text colour well and respectably. One thing that may be an issue is when someone makes every letter a different colour. Why someone would want to go through all that coding I have no idea, but that particular practice would most likely get edited or post deleted.

So, as long as the text isn't hard to read, painful or distracting to a great extent, there really isn't a reason to worry. And if you do use a bad colour or font, your posts will be edited and a short note might make its way into your inbox from one of us.

For example, in the first 24 posts of this thread, there is text in tiny italicized bold font, cyan font, blue font, red font, and green fonts.

None of it is being used for any practical purpose, or to show any specific detail: it's all to draw attention to oneself. If large font is not allowed because of that, why should multicolored be any different?

It isn't distracting, at least in my opinion. Rather, it's a form of self-expression. Before I was AK'd, then Modded, I actually posted in this color. It wasn't to draw attention to myself... It was to post in my favourite colour, green. I very much love the colour green and was happy I could use my favourite colour to post in.

I still say that as long as the colour or font is not glaring, painful or hard to read, it isn't a problem. I don't see the problem with a little individuality. Respectably coloured fonts is not equivalent to extra large fonts.

It's a something alot of forumites like to do to be themselves. It's always better to be yourself. Which is the reason why I'm always parading around in my blue or pink text color.

You may be laboring under a misapprehension about overly large fonts as well. The much larger issue precluding the use of larger font sizes is that of page-stretching. It's a major inconvenience to have to scroll across a page to see an entire post.

I'd agree that posting in a non-black color has no utilitarian purpose. However, though we stress utility and discussion value in posts, there is also room for a bit of self-expression if members have the desire to do so. Within limits of course.

Finally, though it's clear your first post was more of a question than a suggestion, if the discussion in this thread continues any further I think it would be better to do so in Forum Suggestions. If you would like to continue the discussion (rather than asking new questions) let one of us know, astro999, and we'll happily move the thread for you.

I suppose it's a bit rude of me to ask you if you'd like to have this thread moved and then not allow you to explain any further without breaking forum rules by double posting. :P

Would you agree with the difference I mentioned between the inconvenience of large text and that of using non-standard colors when posting? And if not, would you explain why? Speaking for myself, I appreciate this discussion but I have to admit to remaining less than fully convinced that all color use should be disallowed; especially because in longer posts, especially guides, color use can serve as natural line breaks and help the flow of a long post. But we're happy to hear further points if you have them. :)

Nah, my main thing was difficulty in reading posts and that sort of thing. I mean, I understand the need for self-expression, but really, the color choice does not so much express any personality trait except a desire for attention. I think that different colors in posts distract from the actual subject matter.
My actual concern was vison, though: I have some vision problems due to a bad experience with chemicals that shouldn't go in your eyes, so I have problems reading weird fonts sometimes: I was concerned that someone worse off than me would find it even more difficult, even with magnification software and the like.

I like to post in my favorite colour. Red. As far as I know, as long as it isn't too bright, you can use it.

The color actually catchs my attention and makes me want to read the post, just plain black text does not make me want to read the post unless i know its something that i need to read, so in a way the color helps me. also i use color but i use the color that is closest to black so it really doesnt make a difference.

Okay, I'm going to have to ask that future replies be a bit more constructive and relevant; simple affirmation isn't needed at this point. Other perspectives are welcome, as are refutations of those perspectives, but if all you have to say is that it's good to have colored posts I'd ask that you please refrain from posting.

Err... sorry to rehash this, but in terms of color, a recent trend has been the gold color which is really hard to read.
Do we really need so many colors for a simple forum? A system i could see as working would be restricting possible colors: I once saw a forum where you could choose between red, dark red, blue, green, and dark green: all visible colors.

Actually in my opinion that color would indeed be something to be edited out; it's quite difficult to read easily and that's not optimal. If you let me know which thread that was (via PM, not in a public thread if you would) I would be happy to go through the thread and remove that color coding.

And because it is relatively simple for us to edit out difficult colors as long as we know about them, that seems to me to be a workable solution. We just ask that you work with us and mention situations in which you believe the colors are distracting or detrimental to a thread, in case we miss specific posts.
