The Sky Collapsed

We both lie still, dreaming wide awake
A canopy of stars hung above
I pretended to smoke a twig cigar
Resting well in moonlit love
You told me we would close our eyes
Breathe the trees, and count to ten
I followed you, but snuck a peek
Looked up to the sky, and then
The first came loose, and quickly fell
From its shining post
I felt the chime of golden bells
The sound I love the most

The sky slowly collapsed
Stars descended
And I thought perhaps:
Every dusk has its dawn
And each cosmic light must have its end
And every hopeless boy like me
Has you as a friend

We ran and cheered, grinning wide
Watching spheres go down the celestial slide
I looked at you, you winked at me
And I knew we'd join in on the ride
Pixie dust in the atmosphere
Stars raining all around
As each ball of gas breathed its last,
Unhooked itself and met us at the ground
I felt your hand close around mine
The aurora shimmered bright in the sky
I wonder how long my smile held,
'Cause as you looked me in the eyes...

The sky slowly caved in
Stars descended
And I realized then:
Every dusk has its dawn
And each cosmic light must have its end
And every hopeless boy like me
Has you as a friend

The cosmos swirled around us
As I traveled the galaxies in your eyes
I got lost somewhere deep within
While our heartbeats harmonized
In that moment it rang so true
We were two of a kind
Maybe it’s silly, we’re still so young
Yet as you wander through my mind…

The sky lets out a sigh
For it could no longer hold
Yet I thanked it for being so bold
And allowing me to find that…
Every dusk has its dawn
And each cosmic light must have its end
And even a hopeless boy like me
Has you…

April Ballet

Each glimmer held a symphony
Each drop contained a misty song
I watch the wet notes cascade down
My attention’s strayed, but nothing’s wrong
A beautiful April ballet
The first one falls, then it’s “bombs away”
While I sit protected from the choir
My mind attends its blue soiree

The cloudy sky gives way to light
Yet the sun just makes me sad
Its warm rays never feel quite right
And I always feel twice as bad

But when these gloomy shades loom high above
And troubles never seem so near
The torrent passes by so slow
While my mind journeys far from here
I wander through this damp grey world
Wonderstruck in saddened awe
But once that light pierces the land
My mind quickly withdraws

The darkened clouds drift apart
Yet the light just makes me sad
To see my shadow bright as day
Reminds me of the life I had

Downcast and oh so dreary
Each pen-stroke makes me weary
For the sky is slowly clearing
And as I write this I am hearing
The final sounds of my delight
These words plague me with indecision
‘Cause how do you compose a symphony
As you begin to lose your vision?

My mind just grows more and more foggy
As I lose the threads that keep me sane
‘Cause the black clouds fade into the distance
And I’m left to face myself without the rain

Picturesque

The dust scattered all about
Running from the sanded grain
My fingers each quivered with doubt
Of seeing memories locked away
Endless worlds contained within
A small square holds a whole dimension
I glimpse your face and mine lights up
I gain courage for my intentions
The flashback frail in my hand
Nostalgia sweeps away the fear
Immersed in a whole new world I know
That when I close my eyes I'll hear
The chirping of a thousand birds
The waves that crash upon the shore
And as you lie there in the grass
I take a glossy paper tour

A picture's worth a thousand words
What of the ones best left unsaid?
The photo-fragments in my mind
Nag at me as I lay in bed
A single click is all it takes
To capture life and jot it down
So even in a million years
We'll still be around

In the chest I search for more
Tattered snapshots of a different age
Looking at your hair scattered on the floor
While you proudly flaunt your brand-new bangs
I feel like my mind is veering off
The track on which it was meant to stay
And while I gaze upon your face
I wonder where you are today
We shared a pony on the carousel
An ice cream cone in Central Park
Stayed up all night catching fireflies
And fell asleep way after dark
Taking turns on my brand new bike
Throwing our own private party
The smile you gave me from the car
And the tires that took you away from me

A picture's worth a thousand words
Some of them best left unsaid
The missing photos in my mind
Tear at me while I lay in bed
A single click is all it takes
To capture life and jot it down
But even though your likeness stays
You won't always be around

I shut the box of memories
And push it far back in the closet
I see paper crumpled to its left
Unfamiliar, then I recall it
As it unfolds, the sadness fades
The sheet was painted with red ink
The daisy drawings and fancy curves
Bring me back from on the brink
'Cause then I sit down on my bed
Illuminated by my phone
And as it's pressed against my ear
The ringing chills me to the bone
And suddenly the chiming stops
"Hello?" is whispered quietly
I quickly recognize your voice
And hold your photo close to me

A picture's worth a thousand words
Most of which are never said
But completed photos in my heart
Warm me up while I'm in bed
A single click is all it takes
To make a memory you can share
But there's one thing I know about true love:
Unlike a photo, it never tears
