If people want to know, they can just go to your profile, where it says whether your online or offline. If they really really want to know, they can add you to their address book and see if you're online/offline on their My Forums pages. If they really really really want to know and also want to know what you're doing, they can check the Online User List.
Furthermore, some people use privacy settings that don't let people know when they're online.
