It's there to stop hacking.
Captchas are always annoying because its extra work. It's only fun when it relates to something, like nub, noob, or some kind of swear word xD.
I've had one that spelled out my street number exactly. o.O They're onto me!

AQWPlayer -> RE: Battle Captcha (5/28/2011 13:48:19)

To waste human's time and to stop the autoscripted bots or hacking scripts :)

@5rr5: Before you started playing ED and before the battle Captcha was introduced, players who wanted to cheat could use third party programs to fight 1v1 battles for them. These third party programs were called BOTS and the practice of using one was called Botting. Many players were found to be using BOTS and most were banned. A method to prevent this type of cheating was put into place, the battle Captcha. To make things even safer, the DEVs devised the moving buttons, that is to say the buttons that produce your attacks move from battle to battle. They used to always be in the same place, making Botting simpler. At first, the Captchas would pop up about 1 in 10 battles. After many complaints the DEVs settled on the current frequency. It is safe to say that the practice of Botting is dead now.

While the current Captchas seem unnecessary and burdensome they are, none the less, needed and very, very effective.
