I've been gone for a few months and I don't have one anymore.

A while back the forums crashed and many avatars were lost, yours is likely one of them. The only thing you can really do is pick a new one or see if the one in question was re-uploaded. Unless the incident you are talking about is really recent, in which case perhaps the image go removed for some reason, either way picking a new one is your only option.
