How do I subscribe to a thread?

I have this 'subscribed threads' box below the 'subscribed forums' box, but it's always empty 'cause I don't know how to subscribe to a thread! Unlike at the top of forum lists, the tops of threads don't have any convenient 'subscribe to this thread' button. So I don't know how to subscribe. Someone please help!
