Shadow Larc -> Max signature filesize (8/9/2011 4:22:29)

I was wondering if it would be possible to increase the max signature size from 50KB to like 100KB. Really 100K isn't all that big, and it would allow for good quality .png images. Honestly a small part of me dies every time i have to save my sig as a .jpg because the quality is awful. Given the size restrictions (500px X 100px) already in place, images can really only get so big, and even a generous cap would still exclude the absurd file sizes like a .bmp or .tif

Just sayin...

The meat of this is whether or not large images are truly essential in signatures, and I don't really think they are. These forums exist for the purpose of discussion. Yes, signatures can look nice, more so when not restricted by file size limits, but in the end they're extraneous to a thread's topic. Signatures shouldn't be the focal point of a post; their role is supposed to be more low-key. Hence, it isn't exactly necessary to have excellent quality images in them. Also, I personally don't find JPEG to be that bad of an alternative if PNG gives an excessive file size. It gives a decent compromise between file size and quality.

Just a little bit of extra information Shadow Larc. I'm not sure what program you use for such things but if you are using Photoshop there is the ability to save .png as .jpeg without losing any quality at all and reducing the file size, which I have done on numerous occasions.

But like I said this only applies if you actually use the same software that I use otherwise I was no help at all :P.

@Stray Cat - At least for me, and i'm sure for other graphics people it's borderline criminal to save your work as a .jpg -- it really does reduce the quality. My current sig is an uncompressed .jpg and even a heavily compressed .png blows it out of the water (see below)

Top: Compressed .png (about 69KB)
Bottom: Uncompressed .jpg (about 32 KB) (notice especially the discoloration in the red on the shoulders and really just overall)
While I admit that yes, the .png is twice the size of the .jpg, the improvement in quality is quite significant (any graphic artist will tell you that). It's not like 70KB is unreasonable either.

@BlackAces - I use the GIMP, which also has the ability to save as .png and .jpg, but as far as I can tell, there isn't a way to save as a .jpg without any loss in quality. I don't have photoshop, so I can't say for sure, but from my understanding it's just inherent in the coding of the .jpg file that it has to compress and hinder the quality of the image. Either way, I've seen from the forums that many people use GIMP as their primary image editor for sigs/banners/etc, so this would be nice for GIMP users. Either way, like I said in my original post a 500x100 image can only get so big as long as it's not a .bmp or .tif, and a 100KB limit really isn't that unreasonable.

Anyways, just my 2 cents on the matter, but I feel like other semi-serious to serious graphics enthusiasts would agree with me.

Something that might be worth noting: in general, it's preferred that images be used as little as possible and only when necessary (when allowed by the rules) because they pose problems for users with poorer internet connections. This also carries over to signatures. Since they are or at least can be used quite frequently (up to once per page) and normally aren't relevant to a thread's topic, they aren't the function of choice to inhibit users with bad internet connections with. You and I probably aren't members of that group, but the administration has made the decision to cater to all users and their connection speeds.

I understand the reasoning behind it, I guess I just feel like 100 KB isn't really that big by today's standards.
