Watashig -> Posting Features (10/15/2011 22:29:22)

1. Collapsing table/post portion. Exhibit B. [link] As one can see, one is able to hide and expand the "quotation" from Blizzard's Patch notes. I would like to see this as a posting feature, to hide the lengthier raw information from a post like this. [link]

2. TLDR: Some type of spoiler tagging that works a lot better in-line, instead of disrupting the flow with line breaks.
Underline/strike-through independent of word color. I find the spoiler tag often unwieldy in a body of text, and I'd like to have something notable to hide a name in a body of text, while helping people realize that it must be highlighted to be read. It doesn't really work well to merely have a gap in the middle of a post, and it's even harder to realize that there's something when it's at the end of a post. Exhibit W. [link] (Scroll down and go to the expandables (much like the ones suggested above) to see how names and such are hidden like spoilers)

From my experience working with forums, that would require the code for the Quotes box to include a JavaScript to be an expandable/collapsible box. The same could be done for the spoilers box, but I think the text colour should be left as is, in the event that someone does accidentally click the "Show" link.

Yes, indeed, they require javascript. If the forum software has such capabilities the forum devs could add collapsible/expandable tables by replacing the code already used in the BBCode for say quotes and spoilers with that listed in the latter posts of this thread: http://www.hotscripts.com/forums/javascript/59263-expandable-collapsible-html-tables.html with alterations as needed for the forum software.

These forums are running a customized version of an old ASP Playground webforum software. As such, updating to the newest ASP Playground edition would mean losing certain customizations that have been made, so implementing features such as collapsible quotes means that someone needs to program it into the customized edition. It hasn't been done for at least seven years and will unlikely happen in the near future.

Grixus Faldor -> RE: Posting Features (1/15/2013 5:15:35)

@Tapeworm Shoelace: We're aware of that, but that's not the issue. Creating new BBCode only requires the insertion of the raw HTML code, a feature which has been with forum software for quite some time now. Given that the quote and spoiler boxes already exist, it would simply require changing the existing code and replacing it with the prior linked code. This doesn't require much work.

Tapeworm Shoelace -> RE: Posting Features (1/16/2013 18:51:59)

I'm aware that it doesn't require much work, I'm simply elaborating on the background details and mentioning the unlikeliness of such a venture given historical precedence.

Watashig -> RE: Posting Features (1/16/2013 20:18:58)

Well, pretty much every suggestion in terms of the forum software is very unlikely to happen... but it didn't hurt to have a suggestion.

Also this thread is from '11, whyyy

Grixus Faldor -> RE: Posting Features (1/16/2013 23:49:26)

Yes, but the background is common knowledge, but that'd be labouring the point. True, this suggestion will head in the direction others have because of historical precedence, HOWEVER, this change is most definitely amongst the easiest of those suggested. It isn't asking for an update to the forum software, it isn't asking for a complete overhaul of the code, it's just asking that the current code be edited to include collapsibility.
