Crystal Lion -> Art, art, quite contrary. (10/23/2011 8:32:35)

Some of us are known for creating art with one particularly strong theme. Yours truly is usually associated with simplified, and dare I say it, cutesy, art.

Not everyone wants to be stuck in a particular label all the time, as TvTropes put it, they would rather "Play against type."

My question is: Have you ever worked on a piece that was very different from your usual theme? I am working on a piece that can't be linked here. All I can say is if you saw it, you'd be a tad shocked.

Hmmm...
Different theme? No, I don't really stray much from themes I usually have in my drawings. (but what exactly do I "usually draw"?)
I don't really ever think of my drawings having a theme. =/

However, I draw things in different styles all the time. It's very good practice, for you must draw in a way that's uncomfortable to you.
Would that count?

Hence why I said some of us, not all, have a strong theme. I think you tend to draw people more often.

Yes, I'd say drawing in a different style than the one you use most would count.

I guess I typically stay in scifi and monster themes with my drawings. As such, it's nigh-impossible for me to draw medieval type stuff, or something involving normal humans. Like a high school.

For that reason, I should probably practice drawing normal stuff, but it's not as much fun to me.

Womba -> RE: Art, art, quite contrary. (10/23/2011 18:59:51)

Nope. I do use the same style alot with GIMP, but that's about it... I've almost never followed a particular "theme" for very long. And usually it's something I'm over-hyped for/about at the time... like when I produced about 10 GrandChase images.

I did signatures for quite some time, now I'm doing hand-drawn digital (thanks to dA Muro) and a little while ago I did a photo manipulation. Also, I've done a few avvys and one silly army of duckies. Most of my stuff has an anime and/or fantasy theme. (Like this hellhorse I drew a couple minutes ago.)

I tend to be someone who falls under both categories that you listed. While I don't stick to one unique style for all of my work, there are distinct "phases" of styles that I go through, and when I switch it's usually very noticeable.

For instance, one of more recent changes was going from a cinematic style of tag:

to a smudge style:

lordkaho -> RE: Art, art, quite contrary. (10/24/2011 6:17:26)

Not really. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to themes. Though I have great distaste for drawing up anything that reeks of romance.

I can draw up nut bladder busting moe to super grimdark themes to something scenic such as nature and landscapes, though I still have a lot to learn with the latter.
