I've wanted to work for AE for years (DF in particular), and thus I have studied for years. But the people who get internships for DF are all artists. I think coders should have a board dedicated to them as well, so show Artix Entertainment what they have to offer the company.

Baker -> RE: Coding area (12/7/2011 23:21:37)

I could be wrong (I haven't spent time in the art section since before all the redesigns), but I would think you're allowed to post coding in the exhibit area -- it's an art, after all. If enough people start to do that maybe it will eventually warrant its own area of the forum.

Vivi -> RE: Coding area (12/7/2011 23:48:34)

I wouldn't classify writing code as an art, at least not the kind of art that we look for in the Gallery. If you define art in the classical sense as any skill that can be mastered then the Gallery becomes a catch-all for a huge number of subjects and that's not really what it's there for.

A coding section of the forums would certainly be an interesting addition, though it does carry some extra complications compared to the Art Gallery. Executable files are riskier than a standard .jpg or .swf uploaded to a site on the internet even if they aren't intended to cause any harm (a poorly written program in the wrong language can actually wind up crashing someone's computer for example). Project scope can also be an issue as users begin expanding on a larger scale project if our forums become a de facto recruitment center for this new project. On the other side of the spectrum, can something be too trivial to post? If there are 10 different galleries where users are just posting variations of Hello World that can create a lot of clutter for code that doesn't serve any particular purpose. This is less important than the first two but is still worth some consideration.

I don't think I would be against this myself overall, there are a lot of cool things people can do with a good program and seeing what some of our forum members have up their sleeves would be neat. The implementation of the board would have to be handled very carefully if it was decided we wanted one however.

Baker -> RE: Coding area (12/8/2011 2:53:24)

Ah, good point about it not being art in the Gallery sense of the word, Vivi. I should have thought that through a bit more, hah. I agree that it could actually be a good new forum -- I'd be interested in it -- although there are the issues you mention. Maybe it could be structured on an approval basis, where the forum's staff would only approve threads containing safe, substantive programs? Have a holding area for threads waiting for approval (and include large disclaimers that those programs aren't guaranteed to be safe) and then move them into an "approved" forum where only staff can edit them. Not a very elegant system and it would be a pain if the forum became popular, though... Perhaps the answer is to only allow source code so whoever wants to check out someone's work will know what's going to happen before they copy/paste it into their compiler or whatever. Or some combination/none of the above. Spitballing here!

Ninjaty -> RE: Coding area (12/8/2011 13:05:11)

I do agree that it carries a certain risk, but then again, being able to actually write a useful and userfriendly program is an art. It takes great talent to combine usability with functionality, especially if it's actually going to serve a real purpose.

But I make flash games in my spare time, and often write login scripts and other stuff, just because I like doing it. But currently there is no way to show these skills to AE, and thus, 0% chance of actually joining them with my abilities. Imagine if DF had more than one person just dedicated to coding. All the things that could be accomplished. Imagine if AQ or AQW only had one, how long everything would take.

AE always say they get most of their talented staff members from the forums. Well, I think coders deserve a chance just as much as the designers, if not even more. After all, code without good graphics is still a game. But good graphics without code is not a game.

Everest -> RE: Coding area (12/8/2011 14:43:03)

If we were to pursue this it would likely take a good amount of time. I won't even give an estimate at this point because I don't want to be held to a deadline, but this would not happen overnight. But I do think the idea has some promise, though I'm more inclined to support the idea along the lines of a broadening of the community than as a recruitment tool for the games. I think it's a little unfair of you to imply AE gets its artists from the forums while coders are ignored. One very large counterexample has posted in this thread. ;)

In any case, Vivi's is also my largest concern. Before the forum staff even thinks about developing this forum we would need to get approval from the legal department of the company, and that slightly worries me. The forum has a disclaimer already in place that covers liability regarding off-site material, but a sub-forum that allows projects that could conceivably be used by a malicious member to package viruses may be an entirely different story. And even if we followed Baker's suggestion and allowed only staff members to look at programs before declaring them safe, I don't love that idea either for worry of malicious intent. :P

We would also have to make sure this potential forum didn't spiral into the Multimedia forum we used to have, which was effectively used as a place to advertise and recruit for other games. This could be a difficult line to draw, but the limitations of any such forum should it pan out in the future are something I think I need to be open about now.

lv20herosmash -> RE: Coding area (12/14/2011 3:30:59)

i would like to suggest that the links to suggestions be coded so that only the people who decide if they go on the game or not can see it.

~~~~~~~WHY?~~~~~~~
to keep people from copying other players' suggestions and ideas
BlueKatz -> RE: Coding area (12/14/2011 4:14:54)
I also want something like old Media board since the closest thing to coding we have now is Resource room. I used to see other people post music or 3D coding relate to AE too
Why can't we force people to use 3rd party web check. There are a lot of them, checking file, URL and such. I think they can be used if you worry too much about virus. Also like many other web, the posters must be forced to post a virus scanning result from some virus scanning web
