Wandering Guardian -> A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 16:06:34)

So i figured i'd start playing the game again having built up an interest for it in my absence. I thank those who have welcomed me back, it is nice to see old friends again.

To make the main point of this topic there are a couple of things that i need to make clear for those who do not know who i am or how long i have been in the epicduel universe etc. I'm not an alpha tester or elite, however i am a beta tester and founder so have been playing epicduel (although not so much recently) for a good couple of years now.

That being said i can now come to the main point of my discussion; the state of general socialism within the game, in particular Oz World 6, the immortal 'chill' spot of epicduel where the 'cool' people first started hanging out. Such a place back in the day was always a good place to go if you wanted a good challenge and didnt want to have to farm through easy 1v1 fights to get one. It was also a good place to go to have a decent discussion about builds, releases and generally communicate with other people with like-minded interests at heart.

I logged in yesterday for the first time in about 50 days or so and decided to head over to Oz to see if i could see some old friends (As i had planned to quit for good when i left i cleared my friend list out of courtesy, after all, most of my friends have full friend lists so it would have given them a free space for someone else sooner rather than later) and to generally just see what people thought of the end-of-year releases (i'd caught up on the DN's but wasnt sure of general opinion etc).

To my dismay i was greeted by an Oz area quite unlike what i would find if i was writing this post say what, 2 years ago. In one area of the screen two or three people were 'shouting' (using all caps) at each other with some of the foulest language that i have ever heard. However what i find more annoying than that is the general lack of care anyone else was showing for these outbursts, as if either they didnt care or for some reason it was now the 'norm' so it was just ignored/accepted.

They say it is the season to be jolly, and i know that something such as bad language and mannerisms is something to be reported and then sorted out, however from my own experience in the game i've personally found that not a lot is done about this every time i have reported such an incident. Therefore i'd like to try and inspire the epicduel community to turn this game around. It would be nice if an epicduel new year resolution was to become a more friendlier place. After all, the game relies on its player base to keep running, and if the community becomes fully like what i experienced at Oz on my return, i fear not many loyal players will remain this time next year.

I wish everyone happy holidays, and i look forward to hopefully more people challenging behaviour that is, in my personal opinion, destroying the epicduel experience.

frogbones -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 16:21:35)

Which begs the question: Is ED to blame for the change in attitude? If we were to put it on a graph, with Time on the x axis (Alpha, Beta, Delta, etc) and attitude on the y axis (ranging from very nice to very mean, for example), we'd definitely see a trend:

As time goes on (and this game became more expensive, less balanced, and there was less communication/involvement from the devs), the attitude of players goes from good to bad.

Of course, we can't blame others for our decisions (in this case, attitudes), but we also can't ignore the role that ED's deterioration has played in our collective mindset.

Wandering Guardian -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 16:29:32)

You make a very interesting point frogbones. I still think that its a shame that the varium cost idea that Wiseman had talked about has yet to be implemented into the game, but we can hope.

It's true that people will always complain when it comes to prices, no matter what the thing they are paying for. I think most people should be able to maintain some civility while playing a game that children are playing, however.

Buffy A. Summers -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 16:31:39)

I'll Keep This Short And Simple...

FAME Actually Ruined OZ 6/7/8 Area.

That's The Sad Truth.

I Used To Love Going To OZ To Have Fun, Shoot The Breeze, Meet Some Of My Peers (And Fans) And Stir Things Up (Frequent Chat Locks Aside).

But Fame Beggers Destroyed The Entire Point/Purpose Of That Being A Social Gathering Area For Many Of The Game's Legendary Players And Everyday "Regulars" As Well.

Such A Shame... I Wonder Who's To Blame?

Hmmm.

MirageD -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 16:58:21)

hi wandering ;D good to hear from you and so sorry to hear about your "welcoming" back experience....i would like to believe that was an "exception" rather than the rule.....however, buffy is right in the fact that fame has played a large role in some of the rudeness in oz

Stabilis -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:02:41)

Game should use censorship for all slanderous words (ass) but in exchange the players get emoticons or emotes in EpicDuel. Possibly, we could also have text effects and word 'bleeping'.

goldslayer1 -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:10:31)

i agree with buffy.
fame has kinda ruined the OZ spot.

i was never casually at OZ but i would stop by once in a while and see whats happening.
now these days i go there and i get asked for fame. and when i say no, most of them call me noob.
so this is why i try to avoid OZ sometimes.
so most of the times i hear something like "GOLD GOLD, FAME FOR FAME!!!!!!!!!" i exit the map.

Goony -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:13:35)

Hiya WG and welcome back :)

There is a lack of Moderators apart from Landis (Donna Matrix) and Wiseman most have left the game!

Even Cinderella alts are rarely seen in OZ anymore! Used to be that you would fight a Moderator occasionally and they had a presence. Now they just fight NPC's and hide ;)

sad but true, and can be said for most mods.

Lord Nub -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:26:36)

^ Brainwash just made 1v1 that much worse...

Epic PvP battles!!! Against the same people over and over because the rest only fight NPC's!!! That's what the title page says to me anyway.

Shadronica -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:27:48)

ED has been suffering with a huge conflict as to whether it caters for adults or is a family game.

Before Artix Entertainment took over ED it was an adult game. Artix Entertainment likes to target young and old alike but has never fully grasped the concept of making their games a family friendly game as they have never properly addressed the filtering system.

IMO ED should have remained an adult game. The costs to play it are very much high end of the MMORPG market and because we have had so many young ones affecting the outcomes of this game it has essentially ruined a lot of different aspects.

It is high time that Artix Entertainment addressed their filtered chat correctly if it wants to remain a serious contender as a family friendly game provider.

Another game that I play, which has won many awards for being a family game, limits the childrens chat in age grading while the adults have open chat but with a mild filter. Only a mature person can have the option of opening up full chat.

FAME spam was another huge mistake made in this game without any due thought or consideration.

Yes even the mods have to hide now because they are confused themselves about a policy regarding what is considered "acceptable" chat.

what i find funny is that for example while mods help with the testing. most of them hide behind brainwash probably because they cant stand the balance that they created.

Lord Nub -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:35:02)

^ Yep I VERY RARELY click 1v1 just because I enjoy 2v2 much more but I did catch Wiseman last week I believe it was, when he was over 98% and knocked him down.

Haven't fought him since Beta when every time I would beat him he would complain about my heal loop mage lol oh those were the good days to 1v1...

Think I've battled everyone but Titan, Nightwraith, and Ashari...

Titan and Night should play more with the community...I mean so many of us have been playing for two years now and I've actually never even seen either of them period even in the world map lol.

Elf Priest JZaanu -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 17:59:45)

If there were possibly community achievements based on character, it could provide more incentive for players to show more consideration. ED is a game of competition, and regardless of level, there is emotion attached. Expressing the emotion can be so wide in spectrum from respectful to just extreme rudeness, much of it is the character of the player without any social filters.

As players, we can only try to set the example, and hopefully it will be enough for others to see, this is a more positive alternative.

Character based achievements might be a step that could work.

IsaiahtheMage -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 18:00:39)

It is not ED to be blame for this. It is the users themselves. Probably a bunch of 9 year olds who have problems in real life and wanna act out on the net and get attention. Or wanna seem cool or even immature adults who have nothing better to do with their spare time. It is the people/users themsleves that are responsible for this not the ED game itself.

Lord Nub -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 18:13:08)

Well I'll be the first to admit that if this game was as polite as that I would not be playing.

The majority of the population uses the internet and especially the gaming industry as a source of entertainment. If it weren't for the craziness and hilarity of what is said or done in game, I would become extremely bored and the game would no longer be entertaining.

As perfect as everyone wants each other to be, it's not that way. Most of us act differently in real life and use entertainment to get away from it all. Even two people duking it out in game and here on the forums are enjoying every minute of it because it's entertaining and gets them away from the stresses of the real world for a little while.

DunkThatOreo -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 18:15:16)

The games setting isn't exactly the most happy scene you could think of, which effects the players mood
believe it or not, but that can't be helped lol. Thats just the way the game is. Also tlm enrages players as well and when
they start cursing at them they start to use cursing as a daily routine in ED because it becomes natural to them when facing tlm
over and over again. Atleast i think so lol. And the chat filter is pretty horrible as well, and I think what really makes players mad
is how they can't get varium every week because you pretty much need to buy varium almost every week to stay at the top.
Most of those that can buy varium every 2 weeks or less think of themselves as higher than those who don't have as much or no varium
at all. So they like to put others down to feel even better about themselves. Also the game is just full of immature brats lol.
How do I know all this? Well I have been here since the first day of beta. I watched as players became greedy power hungry fools,
I watched as some of my own friends become arrogant jerks.I watched as varium prices, people who have the most most money, best weps,
and rage from kids who don't got any of that take over ED, so i rarely go on now only to see friends. I don't think there is much hope for the
happy days to come back, where everyone was chill and didn't care as much for all this stuff as players do now :/

Rush -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 18:39:36)

Hah, honestly in the "old days" ED was filled with intelligent, slightly older people. This game is different since Math and such plays a very large role.

Now, (and I can't judge that accurately) this game is filled with 4th Graders with their parents credit card. It no longer requires as much skill to win, just money to buy all these "special weapons" therefore I'd assume ED picked up a few younger kids.

I mean the manner, and decorum of ED has dropped but eh thats what you got to live with. Or you could quit.

sk1tz -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 19:04:59)

I have just dug out my old password that I forgot ages ago just to say welcome back wandering G :)
Snake here. I don't play that much any more, lost interest TBH. Have about 20 2v2's a day then that's it.

What would be good is if they opened a area just for MAX level, just 2 screens or something like that, it would sieve the squibs from the wise.

The combat isn't that bad. Its the people and also a matter of time. The longer you have played this game eventually you will get bored FACT.

When this game was first released it was raw and simple. Mages were the only class that needed to be nerfed and that could of been fixed by reducing reroute. They messed it all up with agility and focus (with damage increase which has now been scraped). Now only good for bots which has also been nerfed and now make the gamma bot pretty redundant and now the op class is strength (insert any class here). There is a lot in this game that should of never made it into game and now because of it, builds are now very limited, what's a damn shame because when this game was RAW (Early Beta) builds were creative. Id love the devs to just load up the level cap and weapons of now, into early beta with only 4 enhancements on each weapon and remove agility and return gamma bot with its old setup of 2 attacks (1 of each). Then see the results.

That is the only thing I miss. Being creative and keeping every class capable of killing each other with opposing builds. But unfortunately those days have gone and now I have to get in line and pay up to become the best class. But that's life boys and girls. ;)

The game has changed. Like the old saying go. Evolve or Die.

P.S WG, bones, Buffy and rush every single thing you have just said is Bang On The Nail.

Retrosaur -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 21:28:53)

Only thing I miss was the minimum damage with Focus. I really loved that as a non-var, as it helped to guarantee victories when the opponent was 8 hp or lower. Now, it's almost uncertain as to what you can get with damage, with the exception of getting 3 damage. That said, hopefully someday that'll help the devs to bring back the Focus damage, then again, that'll just introduce 5-focus builds back...so....yeah..

Nexus... -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 21:49:49)

I would like to just make one point about the moderator situation.

Most, if not all moderators now have a huge role in the balancing scene. Because the developers (or artix) cannot hire more staff for some odd reason, we now have our moderators (the ones who are supposed to be moderating), working for absolutely nothing, and producing a very low amount of results. Sorry Ashari and the balance team, its true. You guys havn't made a real balance change since July, and it seems to me that most of the moderators are busy working on the test server instead of interacting with the players as their should be. Of course there are exceptions (Donna), and there are many moderators who just don't play anymore, but the ones that do, arn't even playing on a server that we have access to.

Sad.

Stabilis -> RE: A Sad Truth - An Ode To Better Days (12/16/2011 21:57:08)

I wonder what circumstances they have which would prevent them from acquiring more staff though. Perhaps the AE company is rooted in a smaller building, perhaps AE is not a place of interest for many workers, who knows?

To add to that, IMO it seems like some of them dont want to be in that position.
While there are others who do, and are willing to help, but help isn't accepted.
