With Dry and Ruddy Faces
a song of Christmas Past

Holidays past for me were spent
In dry and ruddy places
Winds arid and (for that place) chill
Made dry and ruddy faces

These faces did, with tree and lights
Our Savior’s birth remember
The house was all bedecked with cheer
As year died on the Embers

On Christmas Eve there did appear
A gathering of brothers
And with them, dressed in festive wear
Their sisters and their mothers

With song and drum and music grand
Their joy they all did herald
And all the world whose ears could hear
Were well and truly caroled

Out in the moonlit winter night
Perched up on wooden fingers
I and all my friends of old
Did look out on the singers

We talked and played as children do
As music washed around us
And once our hour out was done
It was within they found us

The night grew late, and we took sleep
Within our heads the warning
That if we woke and left our beds
There’d be no gifts come morning

At morn I’d wake to Christmas scents
To Father’s Christmas cooking
Out from my bed I’d stumble and
For family go looking

Before the tree we all would sit
And sing to him who saved us
And tell the story of the birth
Of Christ, the one he gave us

And then, with crimson drinks in hand
We emptied out our stockings
Sweet treats and toys, small Christmas joys
From velvet cloth came flocking

The gifts beneath the tree I took
And to their owners bade them
Each was unwrapped and wondered at,
Thanks gave to those who made them

Throughout the Christmas day we spent
Our time in joy and giving
With kith and kin, we kept in mind
The reason for our living

These days, I live in other homes
In cold and snowy places
But still, for me, Christmas shall be
With dry and ruddy faces.
