The Aftermaths
Winter Wrap-Up

We’re coming down to the end game for the Frysteland Conflict. Again, a BIG thanks to the thousands of you who supported us during this in-game war. Remember that the War for Frysteland will remain active until January 27th, at which point the winning side will be announced and the Aftermath ensue as planned.

We do want to hold off on announcing any rewards for being on the winning side due to the issues we’ve had with “turncoats”- we want to encourage you to support your side, even if you don’t end up victorious in the end, and we will be adding incentives toward that end. Also, I know that many players wanted us to extend the Frysteland War, but we have a lot planned for the Aftermath and the next storyline! After all, if a special event lasts too long, it's no longer a special event, is it?

The Aftermath

We’re stockpiling content for a big release next week, including the missions for the Aftermath. Implementing a war event is quite challenging, so removing one and transforming the world is also an ordeal. Legion and Exile are still battling, so we still must prepare for either outcome! I have quite a bit written already, including a bunch of new missions, but your actions can completely change what happens during the Aftermath. During this period and beyond, the Frysteland NPCs will behave as normal NPCs (with the exception of the Boss NPCs).

In addition, we’ll be adding a bunch of PERMANENT Frysteland weapons for your battling pleasure!

Factions Going on a Diet!

The War for Frysteland has given us a great opportunity to reflect on our Faction/Alignment system and its role in EpicDuel's gameplay. We have concluded that Factions are great, but almost incomprehensibly confusing. War Points, War Flags, Influence, War Kills, Token Donations, etc are mysteries to all but the most hardcore players. We really loved the simplicity of the War event being one number that goes up with all players being able to easily view their individual contribution. Thus, one of our goals for the new year is to retool and streamline Faction scoring to better integrate all the disparate systems into each other. We'll be posting more to clarify exactly what changes we're making and how they'll effect the Legion/Exile conflict, Factions, and individual players.

You’re a Heartbreaker

We’ll be bringing back the Heartbreaker weapons in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. We’re also hard at work preparing for our next Epic storyline! I’m really REALLY excited about this one, folks. So far, we’ve started dealing with some pretty interesting issues, including the nature of the identity of one of the characters you already know and love!

Challenging!

By popular request, and to halt the issue with dummying, challenge battles will no longer count toward your win record. This will also allow people to test builds against friends for fun, or to test builds. You will not receive credits, experience, or battle tokens for challenge battles, they will just be for fun or for completing challenge missions. Random battles will still count toward your battle record, as will normal NPC fights.

Where Are the Bots?

A lot of players have been asking about the lack of credit-only bots, and the simple answer is that adding bots with the current system is extremely difficult. All the bots do not work like regular weapons -- they use custom code that is very complex and inefficient. Bots are an amazing feature and we would love to fill the game with tons of unique bots with crazy skills and attacks, so this is a frustrating situation for us as well as they players. One of the programming team's short-term goals is to streamline the code for bots to make them easier to add. Once this happens, we can increase the quantity and quality of bots to provide both Varium and credit-only players with equal opportunities to acquire powerful bots.

In his Design Notes post, Cysero established that ArtixEntertainment is against SOPA/PIPA. These are bills introduced in the US legislature that seek to prevent online piracy, but represent a gross abuse of power by the United States Government. These bills, if passed, would give the US government the power to take down websites suspected of hosting copyrighted material without due process. For example, Twitter could be taken down because of one user using a comic book character (like, say, Batman or Deadpool). Individual web users face serious consequences as well, with performance of a copyrighted work (eg. a video of yourself covering a popular song) becoming a felony with punishments up to 5 years in federal prison. Even works that fall under Fair Use or Satire or derivative works face serious legal consequences.

This could spell doom for a company like ArtixEntertainment, because- while we do not support piracy or distribution of materials to which you do not own the copyright- our games are filled with popular culture references. Games like HeroSmash and Pony vs. Pony are just one big pop culture reference! EpicDuel is not immune- we have several references to other media (eg. the “Cake” achievement references Portal, Banana armor and Too Big! reference Don Hertzfeldt, The Lawman shares his name with a Motorhead song and is a dead ringer for Lemmy Killmister). Also, you could face legal penalties for recording yourself battling in EpicDuel, adding a song to the background, and posting it on YouTube. This is a serious issue, and I hope that, if you’re in the US, you will urge your congressperson to vote AGAINST SOPA and PIPA. You can learn more on Americancensorship.org

If we don't defeat SOPA and PIPA, the Internet will become a much smaller, less interesting, and ultimately less useful place.

I understand that the SOPA/PIPA is a part of the Design Notes, however the discussion of these two bills are beginning to detract from discussion of game-related topics which is always the primary purpose of this forum, and understandably, some of you are frustrated by this. There is already a thread about SOPA in the OOC which you can find here: Stop Online Piracy Act.

If you'd like to discuss SOPA in the context of EpicDuel (how it will affect the business), please feel free to do that in this thread. But any further discussion in this particular thread from this point forward must touch upon the game of EpicDuel. Any general discussion on the SOPA, or the politics surrounding it will be deleted and the poster redirected to the proper OOC thread. Have a good time talking about this topic; it's an important one. But please do it in the right place. If you'd like to carry over particular threads of conversation feel free to quote specific posts and respond in the OOC thread.

Thanks everyone!

Why is it called Aftermath? Why not Afterliterature? Or Afterscience?

It's called Aftermath because things here just never add up. This place is more like quantum mechanics then math class.

I can't wait for the war to end, its draining the 1v1 and 2v2 pools. Faction fix sounds great and so does the player challenge changes. I have players on both sides of this war so I'm interested to see which gets better stuff? I think I even might have a turncoat (purely by accident I assure you) in the mix.

spectra phantom -> RE: =ED= Jan 18 Design Notes - The Aftermaths (1/18/2012 16:07:20)

DestruRaGe -> RE: =ED= Jan 18 Design Notes - The Aftermaths (1/18/2012 16:20:42)

New perma weaps for non vars? I hope so. Making code easier so new bots for vars and non vars can be added in the near future? Awesome! Challenges no longer counting toward win records? Double awesome!

Battle Elf -> RE: =ED= Jan 18 Design Notes - The Aftermaths (1/18/2012 16:23:36)

Does anyone know if the Frost Warrior achievement is leaving on the 27th?

Thanks

Elf Priest JZaanu -> RE: =ED= Jan 18 Design Notes - The Aftermaths (1/18/2012 16:52:27)

With this bill, I am assuming media companies and music sponsored this bill. With both industries loosing money, and have been very slow to adjust to modern technology for their model plan, this will be very extreme with truly unenforceable situations.

With the film industry, I am not sure what can be done since options of entertainment has evolved beyond traditional means. Yet, with the music industry, it seems they must revert to an old standard of using music to promote tours for monies.

Sadly, obtaining information, music, and entertainment is so easily accessible for our modern society, and this bill will not stop anyone, yet will hurt many honest companies.

I recommend reviewing this bill and visiting/calling local US politicians and express your thoughts on the problem this bill provide, and also express some ideas for solutions.

Old Entertainment Industry must modernize their methods to succeed, and this bill, if it is passed, will still not provide any answers.

goldslayer1 -> RE: =ED= Jan 18 Design Notes - The Aftermaths (1/18/2012 17:13:19)

i guess its time to admit ur regular non paying player was meant to never stand a chance at doing what a heavy payer could do in this war.

Matrix77 -> RE: =ED= Jan 18 Design Notes - The Aftermaths (1/18/2012 18:00:17)

It's about time this war ends. I've been fighting hrs and hrs and just can't seem to get any drops. Quite annoyed at farming by now, so great that it's going.

Since there will be a big release next week friday. Are there going to be regular friday releases this week?

Fixing faction is something that needs to be done. I find it very frustrating to have to be going to central to check which factions are on top etc..

Its nice to see heartbreaker weapons coming back as I'll like to grab some of those weapons that I've missed out on last year due to having left the game and was uninterested in playing it. Now that I'm back, I want to stack up on rares to get the treasurer hunter achievement :)

YES! to challenge battles not counting. People of lower levels just won't fight me because I'm at cap and its really annoying and I have lots of token missions that I am unable to complete due to the nature of having to challenge players and many of the times or in fact most of the time, no one accepts my challenges

Looking forward to the programming team's work in fixing the code issue with the bots, so that more bots can be added! Afterall, everyone loves bots right? :P

SOPA/PIPA were an idea propose by a group of people that only wanted to protect their own selfish gains. If such laws was to be passed, the US economy will decrease greatly as a great sum of the US economy comes from online companies. It is indeed a fact that copy rights of works should be observed and be prevented from being illegally acquired or plagiarized in any way or form. However, giving the government and certain entertainment industries the full right and power to held any online company liable along with the user for copy right materials is completely bs. Laws like these should not/can not be allowed to pass through and sign as laws. It will not only affect the US in general but globally as well. Those who proposed these laws was evidently ignorant people who have absolutely no idea how the internet works and what people does on the internet. They based their proposals on assumptions, opinions and their own imaginative logics to try and make what THEY BELIEVE to be true as beneficial to the nation and globally. This is a selfish ignorant idea that is evidently not given much thought of. US higher ups are completely corrupted to the point that they do not care what their citizens think or believe in anymore. They want to be dictators and tyrants that will impose their bs logics upon the citizens. They rally themselves with their ideas and logics as beneficial to the nation on a whole but in reality they are just corrupted, selfish, ignorant people that does not want to realize what they are doing isn't boosting the nation but tearing it apart from the inside out.

Meh...I got 3k in gems...sold!

What's wrong with this war, lol?

Can't wait for a Heartbreaker War if there is one xD

Wait, so Alydriah supports these bills! So, if you want to defeat these bills join Exile and take down Alydriah... Wonders if AE will go as far as Wiki and take down the servers for a few days... hehee, that would generate some votes :p

Good idea with the robots, maybe you could give everyone a bot! Then have them customize with purchasable skills and designs rather than creating new bots all the time! Skills to add to would be available at certain levels and once you buy them you can interchange them on your bot to suit your build.

Upgraded faction/alignment system sounds good, any idea what priority this will be given?

Still can't play on my Mercenary account, looks like I will have to level my alts ;)

Aftermath is gonna rock because the major hostility between the community sides will be over as one side is clearly the winner.

Faction revamp should be good even if my faction doesn't go for anything.

Bot recording, or simplifying as it really is, will make alot of players happy because right now you have the assault bot and that is it.

And Finally SOPA/PIPA must be stopped we said it shouldn't happen in other countries so why make it happen here

I am quite curious with the faction restructure. One of my thoughts, if the factions become regionalized, instead of one world domination, it could provide regionalized domination. This would give various opportunities for many factions to compete throughout the Delta. Fascinating Design notes. :)

i hope the implement faction expansion
where as u lvl up u get 1 more member slot.

heres a chart to explain.

Lvl 1 - 18 Member Capacity
Lvl 2 - 19 Member Capacity
Lvl 3 - 20 Member Capacity
Lvl 4 - 21 Member Capacity
Lvl 5 - 22 Member Capacity
Lvl 6 - 23 Member Capacity
Lvl 7 - 24 Member Capacity
Lvl 8 - 25 Member Capacity
Lvl 9 - 26 Member Capacity
Lvl 10- 27 Member Capacity
Lvl 11- 28 Member Capacity
Lvl 12- 29 Member Capacity
Lvl 13- 30 Member Capacity

keep in mind that these lvls are hard to reach making those high lvled factions well deserving of their bonus.

more on this suggestion can be found here
