Retrosaur -> ED as a Mall (1/19/2012 21:53:03)

Think about this. They took a while to revamp the entire hairstyle system, to allow for more nonvarium hairstyles. They took a while to revamp the retraining system, to allow for quicker and more precise retrains. Everything takes some time to go through, it isn’t a one day thing. You may believe it is ridiculous that the developers are being lazy, but let me put it this way. Earlier before, I believe most Beta & Gamma players recalled that the developers were working on refining their code and making it easier to implement more features. It’s kind of like this analogy. You have a mall complex, but your mall is completely ugly. Everything about it is ugly, it has decent shops, but it has relatively few parking spaces, not enough shoppers, unrefined, unbalanced, so on and so forth. There are not enough “bonuses” for shopping at the mall, as prices are relatively cheap, but don’t offer any long term rewards. What the developers. did back in Gamma and Beta was to level the entire mall. They basically destroyed the entire mall, then rebuild the foundation from scratch (so I believe). Setting up a stronger and more concise foundation enables the resulting buildingwork to be more stable and more stronger. Then they added newer shops, newer buildings that were more appealing, and increased parking spaces to accommodate more people. This actually led to more people playing ED (concurrently). Slowly, and slowly, they have been working on adding new shops, some more catered for hairstyles (when previously, only one shop would be available), some more catered for helping the players. But as always, things take time. You can’t expect people to level a building, rebuild the foundation, and add newer, better, stores in a week. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Get my analogy? The parking spots represent players. More players have played ED since the very beginning, and I believe though that does lead to more debate on various issues within the game (in which I wholeheartedly support), it does help ED grow and develop as a game. The stores represent features. For about a year, no new hairstyles could be given to nonvariums. Their code wouldn’t allow it. Look at it now, there are over 10 different hairstyles for non-variums, and some of them still look very flashy, even for variums. The new retraining system took some time, you could think of the retraining system as the framing of the mall. It took some time to restructure, but thanks to more workers (Hudelf), they finally completed the task. What I’m trying to say here is this. It’s good to push the devs to work on adding new features, but complaining about it and thinking it could take only a few days isn’t the right mindset. Unless you happen to be the next best programmer to come around since any smart programmer (like Titan, Hudelf, other famous programmers, so on), you can’t really say anything about adding features. You can rant all you want about the need to add new features, but that does nothing but delay the developers, who have to look at the forums.
