ITS A TRAP

Yes, the Focus trap. Have you ever heard of this before? Maybe not, if I am the one who coined the expression. To briefly explain the Focus trap: over a period of time, all players will be doomed to play as Focus types because Focus requires a balance of the 4 basic stats and at the same time stat requirements increase ever so slowly to force players to have high levels of Focus, leaving players with mediocre skills, low health (also due to Agility), and very few choices in designing builds.

Discuss, are you scared of the EpicDuel apocalypse? Or are you one of... them?

Chosen 0ne -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 0:09:25)

I am one of them.

Jk, but I'd like to say, it's all agilities fault.

Mr. Black OP -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 0:11:27)

I'm aware of it, to prevent this just remove agility, perhaps make a petition?
Also removing passive requirements wouldn't hurt.

Chosen 0ne -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 0:13:35)

A petition is just what we need. ^^

Nub Apocalypse -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 1:49:41)

No we do not need a petition to remove agility, it is fine as it is. We will not be forced to switch to focus. Higher stat requirements comes with higher lvl caps. We will have more stat points to invest, we do not have to be forced into focus. Besides, strength builds are popular and it is expected that they will stay popular for a while. When strength is an option, many will choose not to use focus, focus+strength = redundant.

Ranloth -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 6:35:18)

Focus will probably be raised then, either the amount of stats needed to get the Focus or make Focus 6 which might mean all previous ones might need rebalancing (so different values).
Why call it a trap? It's Balance issue yet you make your own threads for what reason, to go against it by saying it's a trap? It's common sense..

Oba -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 7:10:02)

This I have been saying for a long time... focus is no good!

Stabilis -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 7:23:27)

@Nub Apocalypse,

If in 6 months to 1 year, my gear has the following recipe:

•requires 45 Strength
•requires 45 Dexterity
•requires 45 Technology
•requires 45 Support

... as Focus is, although more recent, now a basic stat for a basic weapon... am I not forced to use the highest level of Focus thanks to my gear? There is no other way to say it, I have 5 Focus.

quote:

We have more stat points to invest in

There are 2 explanations why this may not be entirely true. First, if staff rides the flow and simply adds the sixth Focus then surely, at the time we will be restricted to primarily Focus at 95 health because, sixth focus requires 50 points balanced in all stats, so achieving Focus 6 would require 120 forced stat points leaving a level 34-35 with 16-20 remaining stat points. And assuming you can control the given stat points, stat abuse would be achieved only by enhancements or if lucky, the correctly statted gear. Secondly, if stat points are balanced, then which stat is your best stat? Focus is. Unless you have hundreds of enhancements to use, you will be restricted to mediocre skills with no one good skill or strong weapon besides the Robot.

endtime -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 14:14:36)

It won't happen. There are always a set of compatible weapons that have no requirements for a particular stat or even stats. For example, the machine blaster, delta club, and bunnyzooka/phys eggzooka combo requires no support, so a strength build won't get support. Even as the game progresses there will be compatible weapons lacking a requirement on certain stats.

Stabilis -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 14:46:48)

True, not all weapons have all requirements, but taken for example:

Machine Blaster► highest requirement = Strength (36)... highest modification = Dexterity (+10)... common, purchasable.

Delta Maul► highest requirement = Dexterity (38)... highest modification = Dexterity (+10), Support (+10)... rare, unpurchasable.

Eggzooka► highest requirement = Strength (33)... highest modification = Dexterity (+7)... rare, unpurchasable.

It seems that even though we can ignore Support, or Strength, or any stat for example, we will be never be dedicated to just one stat; as seen in the relations between requirements and modifications given where there must be both Strength and Dexterity. It is nice to see some stat point sharing coerced... but there was never the chance to dedicate completely to one stat. Well this is due to the blueprints of stat progressions for one, because Titan never intended to see his players surpass the limits of the table that was made. But this will catch up to him, when he has to redesign stat progressions because stat overflow is allowing players to exceed 166 Strength when the point break is 165. The other reason which is evident, is that some staff fear the imbalances that will encompass when one stat is exploited by a player. Stat manipulation is in noway the player's fault, if they were allowed to experiment with the numbers. Fact is, staff had not designed a perfect progressions table with limits to prevent players from overdamaging above the norm. Because EpicDuel runs the way it does with the current stat mechanics, is the essence of why PvP could ever be broken.

One Winged Angel1357 -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 17:04:24)

You do realize we are walking ourselfs into this trap.

The Devs like to try and give us the freedom to create our own builds and play however we wish. The only draw back to this is that when we create a build that is "OP'ed", as it is actually Overpowered or we are just to lazy to adapt to this new threat and thus it shows up as overpowered on the Balance tracker, the Balance team has to come along and give a tweak to things. Sometimes these tweaks are just in weakening skills other it is buffing skill and on other occasions it is adding or modifing a requirement on a skill. This requirement on a skill is one of the factors which create Focus builds because they tend to be stats that do not directly affect the skill thus forcing you to split your points.

Yet another factor to this is the spam builds which have been gaining popularity every since the rise of Enhancements, a classic case of us doing something which the Dev's did not foresee and now it is biting them in the butt. to counteract these stat spam builds the Dev's have to put ever higher reqs on gear forcing us once more to split our points amoung multible stats and bringing us ever closer to a focus build.

Frankly now that I have explained things as I see it, key word there is I, I will say that this does not bother me at all because I will simply ignore this and just throw slight tweaks into my build as the game progresses because those who have known me in-game for a long time can pretty much tell you I was a caster in Beta and I am a caster in Delta and I do not see it chaning any time soon.

ScarletReaper -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 19:21:12)

[8D]I love focus builds. Most of my characters builds have been 5 focus, and if they add a 6 focus I'll go for that too. They don't make skills mediocre, they give you options because you don't have 1 or 2 awesome skills and the rest crap. It makes it so they are all pretty useful. I am one of them. :p [8D]

Stabilis -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/25/2012 19:43:19)

Mediocre meaning that you can max your skills, but cannot get extreme values even if it means that you receive a noticeable vulnerability. [8D]

But of course Focus can still have great skills, they just need more devotion is all. [8D]

Midnightsoul -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/27/2012 21:44:51)

guys guys...seriously...
my solution is making agility lvl scaled...don't make this so hard :I

rayniedays56 -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/27/2012 22:13:14)

Removing agility? WHAT!

No...no...no verrrry bad idea.

Trolololol :)

Reason why...

Bloodmage with 140 health, 100+strength, and crappy defense and resistance...making them even MORE powerful...scary...

AND others...I'm not just picking on BM's...just the strength ones xD....sorry :)

Mr. Black OP -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/27/2012 22:15:03)

I know right, that -2 or -1 defense that will no longer be there will totally break the game, I usually overkill those guys with 20+ damage.

Midnightsoul -> RE: The Focus Trap (3/28/2012 0:35:14)

@rayniedays56 and zman 2

well, I completely get what u guys mean...

@on topic
u know, not only does the agility need to be lvl scaled...

(starting from lvl 34, the rest will have to be lvl scaled by the devs)
if ur BASE dmg (except bot) goes above 21-26 every next dmg point added will take one defense point away
if ur BASE defense/resistance goes above 29-35, then it will start to diminish your offenses (like gun and aux)
if the bot's base dmg goes over 29-33, then nothing else can increase except hp and energy

remember, this is for lvl 34's, numbers will change as the lvl change

EDIT:
@Depressed Void
I find it ironic how you're criticizing about focus builds yet your signature inclues pictures of robots... O_o
