I want an avatar that I found on the internet. It has the appropriate size, but how do I use it?

Hadal Serpent -> RE: Avatar (5/11/2012 20:48:10)

Sorry, only members with a title such as "Helpful!" or "Creative," or AK's can have custom avatars.

Avi Auditore -> RE: Avatar (5/11/2012 20:49:59)

Really? How can I get those titles?

Hadal Serpent -> RE: Avatar (5/11/2012 20:51:09)

I'm really not sure. I'm guessing you only get those titles if you contribute frequently to the forums.

P.S.: So you're also part of the DK's? Awesome! By the way, another common rule is that you're only allowed to post your signature once in each page.

Hello :)

Titles are awarded by the Forum Staff to members that have, in one way or another, distinguished themselves by being exemplar members of the community. It's not something you can expect to get just by doing something. Following the forum rules =AE= Comprehensive Forum Rules is a good start though :)
This link Forum ranks, groups, and titles will explain you in more detail what Titles are and how they work in the AE Community.
As for having your own avatar that is a privilege granted to those you have been given a title, and not all titles give rights to have an avatar.

Just be a good community member and who knows, maybe you'll get it :)

Thank you Sir Croncler and Sir VampireKnight for the fast responses.

Lastly, you can try to PM Seahawk. He will sometimes add new avatars for anyone to use if you sent him a few different ones, though they generally have to be AE related for him to add them as avatars.

And most titles give the right to an avatar - Constructive, Creative, Helpful, and Friendly all do IIRC. It's at the moderator's discretion though, so... maybe. See you around.
