UltraGuy -> A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 9:43:34)

There are some things that some adults would like to discuss but can't since this forum is aimed towards minors. I am thinking of a forum where members, aged 18 and above, can make posts discussing various topics that should not be read by kids. This forum I'm proposing should be viewed only by forum members here who are adults.

Why I'm proposing this: I applied for the Debate Club last year and have never been accepted. A forum moderator informed me a few weeks after I applied that the Debate Club was already inactive and that the club was no longer accepting new members.

Will this sub forum allow sex related topics? It's up to the Forum Administrator to decide if she'll allow such topics to be posted.

Croncler -> RE: A sub forum forum dedicated to adult members on this forum (5/20/2012 9:52:10)

Hey there :)

There are a few reasons why this would not work:

First: there is no way what so ever to control is a member is or is not really an adult, anyone in the Internet can just say they are and even if AE asked for proof that easily faked.

Second: the forum rules apply for everyone be it adults, kids even staff members. I can't see any "adult content" that could be posted without breaking forum rules.

Third: any debates you'd like to have about any topics can be posted in the OOC Boards.

Forth: most of the AE players are kids and the games are highly aimed for kids, adult content is something that will not happen.

I really see no point on having an adult only board and I think that defeats the purpose of the forums.

By adult content, I don't necessarily mean "sexual topics"; by adult content I mean: serious topics. Something like Same Sex marriage.

Therril Oreb -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 10:33:43)

such topics have been discussed before in the OOC room that Croncler linked.
The reason it was no longer allowed was due to the heavy problems that occured.
Flaming, trolling, mocking, etc... was a big problem on such topics so they got blocked to prevent from such things getting out of hand again.

UltraGuy -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 10:50:30)

The age limit will prevent that from happening.

ArchMagus Orodalf -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 10:57:34)

There is a thread in which there is discussion to possibly remove one or more of the current restrictions.

Scakk -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 10:58:43)

This forum is directed at and towards a PG level of posting. The forum has a set of rules for the entire which can superseed any specific forum's set of rules and as such your suggested forum would not fit into the rules of the forum. The parents of many of the younger players and forumers are very pleased with the fact that we take care not to allow topics, discussions or various media over PG to be posted or discussed on the forums where their children enjoy their free time.

The Debate Club did indeed post some topics that pushed the edges of the PG type posting, but it was strictly monitored. There were some topics posted there that were mot within the rules of that forum or the forum itself and were removed. There are discussions now going on about the Debate Club itself and when something is defined it will be made know to the forumers in some fashion.

Creating a forum viewable only by a specific group of people is easy enough to do. This creates an issue of: How do people know it is there and joinable if they can not see it? Another big issue I forsee would be that people that wanted in said forum would tell us what we needed to hear in able to join the forum aimed at a higher age group. As I am sure you are aware there are lots of people out there that put the wrong birthdate for games so they are not limited in the enjoyment of the game. I fear this would be the same for the forum you are suggesting.

Eukara Vox does allow some topics a little more "adult oriented" in the OOC, however they are very limited and under her disgression if they are allowed to be discussed. If you want to see if your topic you want to possibly discuss is allowable there you can PM her and ask if it would be acceptable or not. If a topic you prupose is allowed it will be watched very closely as "adult orientened" topics can and have caused flaming, trolling and various other behavior issues.

Croncler -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 11:01:43)

And then we are back on the first issue I mentioned, it's impossible to control the real age of the members that register on the forums there for it's impossible to prevent anyone to enter said forums.
This is mainly a forum for AE and their games, any other topic should, as I mentioned, go to the OOC board as long as it follows the rules of the forums, which I also linked on my previous post.
Most of the community is under aged and some of them even infringing the rule that you have to be over 13 years old to register on the forums and games. Adult content is not and will not be allowed. There are several "adult" debates you can have without going against the rules like politics as long as the rules are met.
Sorry but this will just not happen.

Simple: the administrator makes an announcement about the existence of the sub forum.

It's easy to tell the age of the forumers by their way of posting. And I think it would good if there were a application for this sub forum.

1) Forum Announcements won't be noticed after a couple of months. For example, the announcement about the new HeroMart forum was already removed, and I can't remember it being around for more than a week or so.

2) That's not necessarily true (trust me, I'd know ;-)). And even if it were, it would a lot of work going through each applicant's post to see whether the member has a good consistency of a positive and mature posting attitude to determine whether he/she is fit for the proposed forum.

Eukara Vox -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/20/2012 18:42:27)

Watching how someone posts has NO bearing on how old they are. Some of our oldest forum members have been the instigators of rule breaking, rudeness, trolling and flaming. Just because an age is established, it doesn't stop any if the older individuals from being any more prone to disrespect than a younger member.

I have had issues in the past where I looked at someone's age, saw the older age and was flabbergasted that someone of that age would be acting like what everyone expects an angsty teenager to act like.

As a matter of fact, I was quite embarrassed for the adult population.

I cannot see the need for a subforum for adults only. This forum is for a game company that produces games for all ages, and the forum aimed at PG. It is to be a family-friendly place, which has a bulk of its workforce to be under 18. If you desire to talk about "adult content" or "adult topics" then there are places for that elsewhere. The OOC will slowly begin to allow more mature topics when the forum proves it can handle it, when ALL ages can handle it.

Armadyla -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/21/2012 12:03:46)

u realize that most poeple playing are kids rite?

UltraGuy -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/21/2012 15:14:56)

Eukara, do you mind telling us the demographics (age) of this forum?

Eukara Vox -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/21/2012 17:47:42)

The demographic (yes, I know what that word means) that we serve here on the forums is varied. A majority of the population is pre-teen and teenager. We have younger individuals and older individuals. I asked a few people, one of which is a player of our games, what they thought the demographic was for a PG forum. The most frequent answer was 9-17 years old.

This forum is determined PG and will be maintained at a PG level to serve all ages that frequent it, and to uphold the family-friendly atmosphere that was first targeted when Artix Entertainment started out.

entidadpunk -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/22/2012 20:06:59)

saying "because we cant know the real age of the players" is irrelevant, because you cant be 100% sure of anything on the internet, what if i say i am a space zombie robot?

you cant prove me wrong, because this is the internutz.

Vivi -> RE: A sub forum dedicated to adult members of this forum (5/22/2012 22:03:32)

It's relevant when we're talking about adding boards that potentially need to be restricted to certain groups of users. If all it takes for a 13 year old to access an 18+ board is to set their birth year back 5 years then that defeats the purpose of having a restricted section in the first place.

Croncler mentioned it once already, but I think this warrants bringing up again since this is a fairly important point. The primary role of these forums is to support the games. They're a centralized place for players to get information about what's going on from different sources (newsletters, design notes, twitter, staff posts, etc), discuss the AE games that they play and get support for those games when necessary through forums like Q&A and Bugs. We recognize that community development is important and helps enrich the experience people have with us which is a big reason why we offer various community forums like OOC and the Creative Art section, but this isn't intended to be a one-stop shop for everything you'd ever want to do on the internet. We can't offer you tech support or medical advice, we can't help you with your homework, and in this particular case we can't do a whole lot to facilitate discussions of truly mature topics that a large portion of our player base probably wouldn't be ready for. Eukara is doing what she can with some topics in the OOC board, but ultimately if you want to talk about these things you'll need to find another site that supports those discussions.
