Proluge

The morning sun slowly crept up on the horizon an early Tuesday. A small boy had wandered away from his village, lost within the entanglement of the Devil's Underbrush. He screamed for his mom, but was answered by the howls of lone wolves. He ran in any direction but tripped on a hook-shaped vine that sprouted from the ground. He fell over and tore his shirt. Nonetheless he got up and ran away. As he approached the opening a great heavy weight fell on him, dragging him back.

The wolf lowered its gaping jaws to his neck and slowly sunk its teeth in. The boy winced, and slipped into death. Another wolf ripped his head off and trotted away. The first wolf lapped at the blood and dragged the body back into the Underbrush, happy with it's kill.

The boy's mother wept over the memorial the villagers made for her son. She cried into her husband's shoulder, who himself tried to keep his cool.

"We need to destroy the Devil's Underbrush," one woman said.

"But the wolves would devour us, surely this is the truth!"

"We must find a way around it."

"But how? For generations the Underbrush is the only land we know besides our own."

"There must be other people on the other side."

"If there is an other side.

"We must ask the witch!"

"The witch?! Are you mad? She would need a sacrifice, and we have no more sheep or goat."

"One of us should go."

"Who would be mad enough?"

"I will." Everyone turned to the villager who made the comment. He had storm grey hair that came down to his shoulders, with bangs that covered his wolf-colored eyes.

"Don't speak Saratov! You are but an outcast."

"If I am an outcast then send me. You people would be better off without me."

"Don't meddle in our affairs Zealot!"

"Ill go, but only for the lost little boy." The boy's mother looked at him, eyes swollen with tears. He looked at her and nodded.

"Thank you." Saratov turned around and headed for the stables.

"Why is he even here?"

"The witch said he would save us from this hell hole, but he's caused more trouble."

"Maybe he's going to kill the witch."

"That's impossible."

"But he has wolf eyes. That's the sign of a Zealot. A Changer of Events."

"Lets hope he does lead us out of here."

One

The villagers of the Land of Kel have been in turmoil for the past two thousand years. For starters, their source of water comes from an underground stream that's mixed in with sulfur from nearby sulfur mines. One bucket of water takes about seven days to purify. Trees only sprout on the endless amounts of "floating islands", and reaching one is near impossible. The same goes for iron, plants, fruits and most other essentials. However, the villagers make the best out of what they own.

The Devil's Underbrush is a large forested area opposite the village gates. Its maze-like trees and infamously devil tail-shaped vines and grass have given the large section its deadly name. A pack of human eating wolves dwell within, waiting for another unlucky soul to wander in. Many even claim the wolves are from Hell, sent by Satan to torture their poor souls forever.

A legend enscribed on the Great Obsidian Slab tells the story of a man who bears the Eyes of the Wolf, the Zealot. He will lead the villagers out from their miserable lives and destroy the Devil's Underbrush. In doing so a kingdom will be erected on the site of the Devil's Underbrush. For generations the villagers have been waiting for the Zealot to arrive, but their numbers only dropped as hapless villagers wandered into the Devil's Underbrush. Many gave up on the prophecy, many others still hoped.

However, on a very scorching July night, a man who claimed to be from a village on one of the floating islands showed up. The villagers wouldn't let him in, knowing that the wolves come out at night. An elder said that if he lives they take him in, so they waited. Sure enough they heard wolf growls, but then came the howl of a creature that was soo blood-curtling the night air became noisy with quietness.

Morning came, and the villagers needed to open their gates. When they did, they met the grisly scene of the man holding a fang-shaped dagger in one hand. At his feet were the bodies of five wolves from the Underbrush. His face was smeared in blood, but they noticed his eyes were wolf yellow, almost gold. They took him in and interrogated him. After a few hours the village elders decided to let him stay. They surmised he was the Zealot, judging by his eyes and how easily he killed wolves.

His name was Saratov Fangbreaker, a villager from the village of Xia. He was assigned to pick fruits from a floating island but the floating land mass moved away from the village. Judging by his black cargo pants, black and white boots, gray short-sleeved shirt and the obsidian/diamond dagger that his village was extremely successful. He believed that the Devil's Underbrush could be destroyed, but needed supplies. After two years of building the village constructed a machine that could destroy the Underbrush. However, they didn't possess the energy to charge it. An elder claimed that a witch could empower the contraption.

Saratov valiantly rode through the Great Green Plains, whose soil could be burned down to make sulfur, on a horse he raised since his arrival. The majestic black steed never waned in the hot summer day, nor the brisk night. The steed could not tire out, in part to the ancient magic Saratov used. Saratov believed the witch was causing all the torment the villagers received. As he pondered on those things a small hut that stood on chicken feet appeared in the middle of a pasture. The horse stopped, fearing the uneasy aura eminating. Saratov spoke in its ears softly, calming it down. He got off and walked towards the hut. A young woman stepped out, eyeing the man approaching the hut. HER hut.

She had solid white eyes, with no trace of the iris. Her hair was kept back in a ponytail with a bang over one side of her face. She wore only a school girl's uniform and held a staff ordained with skulls at the top in her grip. She smiled, revealing rows of jagged sharp teeth.

"My my, a young man come to make me less lonely!"

"Good day Baba Yaga."

"Oh, you don't have to call me that. Call me Yaga."

Saratov sat on a very small stool that surprisingly held his weight. Yaga had prepared tea, and sat opposite him drinking from the small cup. She stared at Saratov, who only looked back with an expressionless face.

"You're not from around here," the witch said. "There are traps that go off for people who don't possess magical energy."

"Why such risks? You're a witch."

"I wouldn't say 'witch'. Ill accept Sorceress. So tell me, why do you come here?"

"I need energy to destroy the Devil's Underbrush."

"No."

"Why do you refuse?"

"Because I said so. However, there is one other option." She smiled, licking her lips.

"Is something the matter?" Saratov asked.

"You! You possess Reaper magic! You tricked me!" She lashed out, transforming into a haggard old woman. Her neck began to deteriorate, making her black blood shoot out. She fell to the wall and died as her body quickly turned to bones.

"It is done." Saratov took her staff and exited the hut. As he rode off the hut slowly deteriorated, leaving behind a heap of debris. A voice echoed in his head.

You will pay for killing me Reaper. HA HA HA! You just wait! You may be the Zealot of legends, but I'll make sure you go down in infamy!

Two

A wolf lunged out at a farmer, but was brought down by the five-pronged rake. As he took out the reaping tool he looked up to notice the Devil's Underbrush wither away slowly.

"Hey Solomon! That Saratov man did something." A stout old man got up from the small porch and took off his glasses. Even though he was near blind, he felt the great evil of the Underbrush recede. A couple of wolves ran out trying to kill an unsuspecting woman bending over to pick up something she dropped. The old man smiled, slipping on his glasses and picking up a revolver he had tucked in his pockets. He threw it to the man wielding the rake.

"Do your job Damian." The man caught it and shot down the wolves near instantly. The woman got up, freightened by the gunshots. She turned to Damian and smiled. She winked as she walked away, leaving him in a hot sweat.

"Virginia Evans winked at me," Damian said as he pushed away the red locks of his hair from his face. The old man laughed as he sat back down.

"Ya done fell in love with a tart! There's better women here than Virginia Evans!"

"Sure Solomon." Then he turned around to the noise or a horse galloping. Saratov rode into town, holding the staff of the witch. He screamed for joy, waving at Saratov.

"What's the matter Damian?"

"Our problems are going away."

"He went with a large group of men," a woman said as Saratov came down from his horse.

"They went inside the Underbrush?"

"Yes. A few hours ago the Underbrush began to turn black and wither away. Taking advantage Viz and the guys rushed in with anything sharp they found lying around."

"Thank you Emilia." As Saratov ran towards the Underbrush a hand grabbed his shoulder. When he looked back, it was Emilia.

"Bring them back safely." Saratov nodded as he rushed in. Saratov grabbed onto a large tree trunk and absorbed the life out of it, causing it to die. Distant shouts and howls echoed from the east, signaling him to run there. He took out his dagger and plunged into a small cavern system that came out from the ground. It reeked of sulfur and other poisonous gases. As Saratov got deeper it became increasingly brighter, and colder. A very large wolf ran around from the corner, jaws out to rip at Saratov's neck. However, the Reaper Mage grabbed it's upper jaw. The wolf bit down, causing black blood to weep from Saratov's hand. As soon as it lapped some blood it fell back and hacked up the blood again. Saratov plunged his dagger into the beast's head and absorbed its life force.

"Hellhounds. This only means one thing."

You're in the Underworld, Reaper Mage.

"Why do you keep in contact with me Sorceress?"

Why, only to guide you. Just be careful not to run into Death. He hates Reaper Mages

"Thank you." But she didn't speak again. Saratov examined the barren landscape for the men of the village. He heard shouts and howling not to far ahead and decided to investigate. As he approached the noises he was greeted by the most gruesome scene he'd ever seen. Wolves laid on another, with gashes through their heads and bodies. The men themselves weren't doing bad but none were dead. Everything seemed good until a black cloaked figure arose from the corpses of the wolves and attacked the men. As it touched them the men slowly fell to their knees, eyes white and empty. They died falling to the floor. Saratov attacked the figure but was grabbed by the neck by a black skeletal hand.

Reaper Mage, what business do you have here in my domain?! The other men ran off, taking advantage of the situation. Death revived the wolves and sent them after the men. Saratov raised his hand and drained them of life. However, he felt a slight shock run up his spine.

"What do you want Death!?" The figure slammed him into a slab of rock, knocking him unconscious.

We're going to have a bit of a chat, Saratov!
