The ErosionSeeker -> On the subject of name changes (7/21/2012 21:51:27)

i've heard rumors about it, on how each person can only ever get their username changed once, but i've never really understood how that works.

i've noticed a few people changing their names, with alac -> alina and mysterious ranger -> myra

questions:
- who is able to change names?
- who is eligible for name changes?
- is the 1-limit for everyone or only normal players?
- does name capitalization count as name change?

also, i would like to suggest that there should be a system to change capitals in your name (1/day or something to prevent abuse) without needed to invoke an admin to swap it for you.

because i'd really like that second s in my name to be capital for easier naming in posts >.<

1. Seahawk changes names
2. Anyone
3. I believe that staff are not affected by the 1 name change limit because that might be a problem(since a staff member might end up with a name that can be considered copyrighted and not know it thus they would need another name change to fix that. There would be no circumstances at all for a non staff member to get another name change unless Seahawk somehow misses you having a name change already).
4. I don't think you could really count that as a name change and I doubt that Seahawk would really bother with a name change issue like that(maybe if you convinced him you had some seriously bad OCD about your name causing you major stress over it each and every day you log in).

All Forum Administrators can change forum names, but Seahawk is the only Administrator who handles name changes.

Back when Reens handled name changes, she said that capitalization does not count as a name change because the forum does not distinguish between capital and lower-case letters when it stores user information or when logging you in. To the forum, capitalizing a letter in your name does not make it a new name.

I don't think that can be done due to how the forum coding works. It would involve giving all new members access to (I believe) the administrator control panel.

Yep, allowing users to change names in any way/shape/form is not feasible and would indeed require restricted access to the ACP, but access nonetheless.

- who is eligible for name changes?

Anyone can ask for a name change. However, we do require that you have a recent history (usually 3 months) free of bans and sever warnings before we'll actually change the name for you. So if you just got back from a ban yesterday and ask for a name change, I'll respond by telling you that you need to wait three months.

- is the 1-limit for everyone or only normal players?

It's a limit for normal forum members, for several reasons. First of all is to keep a certain amount of consistency: if there was no limit, there are people who would be asking me to change their name every other week. It also makes it easier to keep track of people if we don't have to constantly worry about who you were yesterday and who you might be a week from now. Having a limit also makes sure that people who request name changes put thought into their names, and aren't just making frivolous requests because they can.

The limit doesn't apply to forum or game staff per se, mainly because by the time you reach the level where you'd be staff I'm not concerned about those reasons. You mention Alina as an example so I'll do the same... if she comes to me tomorrow and asks for her name to be changed I know she's not doing it frivolously and has a good reason to do so, just by the very nature of who she is and what she does for AE. That being said, if one of the moderators was asking for his or her name to be changed once a month, I'd tell them it was time to pick a name and stick with it.

- does name capitalization count as name change?

The forum is not case sensitive with names: for example, it considers Seahawk, seahawk, SeAhAwK and SEAHAWK to all be the same... the only difference is what is actually displayed when you post. If you ask me to fix the capitalization on your name, I don't count it as a name change because I realize that our forum doesn't have a function to let you change your displayed name like many other forums do (which is what allows you to set your own capitalization). But again, if someone starts writing to me twice a month asking me to fix their capitalization, I will end up telling them to make a choice and stick with it.
