Hmm... it seems odd that the window isn't disappearing after you pick an avatar. What browser are you using? It disappears for me when I check it in IE and Firefox.
The other things I can suggest is to make sure you have clicked the little radial button next to "Display Avatar." If you don't choose that option, it won't display an avatar even if you have picked one. You also need to make sure to click "Apply" at the very bottom of your profile page once you've finished instead of picking "OK." OK will close the window, but it won't save the changes.
Another thing I can suggest to try is to click the little picture next to the link you click to choose an avatar. That will show you what avatar you have chosen; if you've selected one properly you should see it.
