XapApp -> Deletion of inactive accounts (9/27/2012 4:47:15)

Accounts that have been inactive for a specific amount time being deleted if their title is still "New Member"?

I don't know why, but it's stated several times by the Forum Staff that accounts will never be deleted.

Accounts are in fact very rarely deleted; I remember a few old threads with posts by accounts that read [Deleted] or something along those lines. I think the rationale is that any inactive account may want to someday return to the forums, and deleting their account might upset them (and could be complicated by the rule that duplicate accounts are not allowed). Furthermore, any account that might be deleted for behavioral reasons is effectively deleted by a permanent ban, except that bans preserve the account so forum staff can look at the profile to see why it was banned, reactivate it at some point if there's a compelling reason to do so, look at its IP address to compare to potential duplicates, etc. And since regular members (and AKs) can't search for banned members, deleting wouldn't offer any benefits beyond maybe saving (what I assume is) trivial data space.

Considering that many of our forums auto-purge old posts, it would be a bad idea to auto-delete accounts that were flagged as new members... if you were posting regularly in a forum that purges frequently and then went inactive for a few months, you could very easily be dropped to "new member" status as your posts were purged. As the admin who handles name changes, you'd be surprised at the number of requests i get that start out "I've been inactive for awhile and now that I'm back..." I imagine those people would be rather disappointed if they came back to find their account had disappeared.

If there's ever a need, we admins can always delete an account manually. Usually the only reason to do this is if we need to remove an account that was never properly confirmed via email, and even that doesn't happen often.

@seahawk.

I would be a good example of that having only recently returned. Been here since 2008. Sometimes you need a break. Glad you don't delete accounts. More often then not, people like me return.
