Z's Through the Lens Photography

Background

I am a freelance photographer, that started out in early 2011. I am currently not attached to any media agency or company. Journalism is what I do best, however my style changes as I am experimenting myself with new things as time passes by. However, it is common that most of my work are in the area of sports, actions and events. A little bit of landscape here and there to express myself. Comments and critique are appreciated over here.

In case if anyone is wondering what does the little 'Z' in the title stands for.. Well, it is the initial of my real name. I am not too sure if I am allowed to write my real name here, even though I am fine with it.. To be safe, an initial will do. Nevertheless, I hope my photography would inspire some of you here. Enjoy!

Stuck at home for another week, recovering from my wisdom tooth surgery. Just as I gotten bored at home, this is what I shot out of ordinary things around.

High res view recommended.

The game was shot during the weekend. The weather was nice and cooling. The sun behind the clouds gives a soft lighting, illuminating and seperating the subject away from the background. It is best shot during sunset to achieve this.

Time for another image sharing. Almost a year since my previous update.
Not sure who is the cosplayer. I attended a dinner event and this was there. Very detailed costume!

It has been raining throughout Singapore and the opportunity to have a good photograph taken was so slim. This photo fortunately was taken after a light rain had settled in the late afternoon. As you can see, the sun was settling down. High resolution viewing is available via flickr.

Photo of the day. I decided to go on a walk to the edge of the country and there is located the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. Two stations away from the busy heartland. The cruise centre can serve up to two cruise ships at a single time! All the big cruise ships ports over there while smaller ones ports somewhere closer to city.

High res view recommended!

Wyrm -> RE: TTL; Z's Photography (2/12/2015 15:29:44)

I really like this latest snap. I love how the tones of the building almost match those of the water and sky but not quite, it's so very understated and it's beautiful.

aNyThInG -> RE: TTL; Z's Photography (2/12/2015 23:51:19)

I'm glad you like it! I wanted to go for a full colour, but gone subtle with it since all I had was a cloudy grey weather in the photo. Therefore, made everything to match.

Finally found myself a free day after long term of study. I decided to lurk around city area highrise and take some view. It was raining and it did not go as plan for the day.

I thought I'd add a new photo here.. Been a long while I updated my gallery.
So, here is a fresh photo from today's walkabout in the Marina Bay area in Singapore. Security has been tightened as the large crowd were expected during the rehearsal of Singapore's Birthday celebration.

Arthur -> RE: TTL; Z's Photography (7/29/2017 13:30:45)

Hey there, I was just checking out your photos and found the Bugis Street View quite interesting to look at.

Just a question though, did you by any chance use the in-built miniature effect on this particular photo or is the blur effect all a result of post-processing?

Also, it's quite refreshing to see someone not using standard Canon lenses that come with the camera. Just curious, how many lenses do you use other than the Fisheye, wide angle and the Prime ones mentioned here? Also, any additional attachments that you would recommend that would help with the lighting and general quality?

Great work here. :)

aNyThInG -> RE: TTL; Z's Photography (7/29/2017 13:52:08)

Hello Arhur, I am glad you have asked.

For the miniature effect, I actually used Photoshop to achieve it. I remember very well I used this guide. Haha.

I do not have many lenses in my arsenal. My Canon 70-200mm L lens already broke down. So I am pretty much left with Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG, Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 (my most used lens) & Canon EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. Canon lenses are quite expensive and since modern lenses are enough for what I need, I do not mind buying third party lenses. I have retired from my work as journalist, so I am now just doing photography as an hobby. Lesser lens means lesser maintenance needed for me haha!

To be honest, I do not recommend buying any attachment of the sort except external flash gun. I would advise you to keep practising on the technical aspect so you could nail the exposure down without anything. After that, find a post-processing workflow that may suit to your liking. It took me awhile to get accustomed in using Snapseed App (both Apple & Android app).Initially I thought it would be too little as compared to Photoshop, but after awhile, it helps a lot. Off course I am not saying any mobile app will replace Photoshop anytime soon. Not yet. I use YouTube as my primary source to learn editing workflow.

Shot completely with Ricoh GR II. My new camera! No edit was done. Completely out of camera.
