This is my first attempt at story writing so bear with me. Go here if you have any commentary.

A Broken Fate

Chapter1

He heard splashing behind him as he ran through the sewer. Remembering what had gotten him into this predicament of running through the sewers while being chased by the city guards.

His day had started off as it usually did. He had gotten up feeling that things would finally change that he would finally pass the test to become a full Drakous member and join those already being sent out on missions for the Drakous. Drakous members were well trained in tactics, magic, negotiation and one's preferred weapon. Members were usually hunters, mercenaries or they provided extra protection to the Royal escort. He was thankful though that the test was always easy missions and that there was always a team taking the test especially because his friends Terra and Kane were finally eligible for the test.

He donned his leather armor and headed for the door as he stepped out he heard someone down the hall yelling at him.

“Hey Drake!” as he looked towards the source of the sound he saw Kane running up the hall towards him.

“Hey Kane. What is it?” asked Drake normally.

“Terra is being taken to the Council.” responded Kane in between breaths.

“What!” at the mention of the Council, Drake began to lose his composure “Why? What did she do?” the Council are the one's who administer the test.

“She got into a fight with Luna. Before you ask Luna started it and then Terra accidentally set Luna's hair on fire.” responded Kane while trying to suppress a laugh at the last part of what he said, that was kinda mean but Luna was the King's youngest daughter so to orphans like Drake, Kane and Terra she was something of an annoyance the way she always tried to put them down. “So what do we do now Drake?”

“We head to the Council's chamber hear what they have to say and work from there. But today is the day of the test so the most they might do is give us something that will be related one of Terra's weak points” responded Drake as he started to walk towards the Council chamber

“Okay if you say so Drake.” responded Kane as he hurried after Drake.

Walking to the Council chamber always took a while as it was on the opposite side of the fort from the trainee quarters but Drake always found it refreshing as it didn't require one to think that much, but today Drake thought of himself and his two friends. He was tall with olive skin, raven hair and gold eyes he was always the subject of awe among the trainees and even some of the veterans because of his skill with a sword especially since he beat the swordsmanship teacher a few years back. While Kane on the other-hand was much shorter with a lighter complexion than Drake's, sandy brown hair and one blue and one green eye. He was just as well known as Drake for his appearance and his bargaining and negotiation skills. Then there was Terra, she had Drake's complexion and height with auburn hair and gray eyes she was one of the girls that the other guys especially the swordsmen fought over and the envy of the other girls for it. When the three of them had shown up at the fort half-starved and covered with cuts, nicks and bruises they were mistaken for siblings, but that was eleven years ago when they had been five. Now they were sixteen and no one mistook them for siblings.

Waiting for them at the door to the Council chamber was Luna in all her supposed glory. Her brown hair which usually fell down past her waist was now much closer to her ribcage her green eyes glared directly at both Drake and Kane as they walked up.

“What are you doing here Luna?” asked Drake calmly.

“Same as you probably, your not the only group going up for the test today,” replied Luna.

“Here's a question, where is the rest of your team Luna or are you planning on soloing the test?”asked Kane sarcastically.

“My team is just running late, they'll be here in a bit.”retorted Luna.

Chapter 2:
“Both of you enough.”spoke a new voice. The voice was deep and powerful the only person Drake had ever met that had a voice like that was his friend Prince Arros, Luna's older brother. Turning towards Arros, Drake saw that he looked the same as always tall, muscular, blond shoulder length hair. Due to the muscle that Arros had many people thought he was a dim witted hulk, but Drake knew all that muscle housed the mind of a brilliant tactician.

“Arros what are you doing here?” asked Luna a little annoyed to have her brother reprimand her in front of Drake and Kane.

“I'm here on official business today.” he replied walking into the Council chamber “You three just going to stand there or are you going to come in, you all have a part in my plan.” Drake, Kane and Luna shared a look of wondering of what Arros had meant by plan as they followed him in to the Council chamber.

The chamber was massive, but bare except for the massive table, at the table sat the entire Council as well as Terra, she looked like she had been waiting there for a long while. At the head of the table sat the Drakous leader Serge. As Drake and company approached the table Serge stood and spoke

“Ah. Prince Arros there you are we've been waiting, and I see you brought the others with you. Please have a seat we have much to discuss.” As Arros and the others took their seats, Luna next to Arros, Drake and Kane next to Terra. Serge began to speak

“What is discussed here most not leave this room it is to stay between the Prince, the Council and you four Drakous members. There appears to be a great host gathering to the North in the Frozen Barrens. As Drakous is closest to the Frozen Barrens we will be sending scouts there to determine how dangerous it is while Prince Arros brings the army north. At which point we will join forces to deal with the threat if need be.” As Serge stop for a breath.

Kane spoke up “So that's where we come in we are going to be the scouts?”.

“No.” respond Serge shaking his head “You four are going out on a mission of utmost importance.”

“Four?” asked Terra sceptically “I only see three of us and Arros' brat of a sister. With all du-”

“Terra shush.” Drake hissed as he interrupted her “Sir none of us” gesturing to himself, his friends and Luna “are full members so how can we go on a mission?” he asked hoping Serge could stop Terra from insulting Luna in the middle on the Council chamber.

“Glad you asked Drake. You four. Yes four.” spoke Serge before Terra could interrupt again “Each of you have skills, traits and talents that when used in conjunction are key to completing this mission. Drake your tactical skills and swordsmanship are par none you passed your test when you beat Secrous in a training duel and outsmarted Arros in that tactics training exercise a few years ago. Kane your natural ease and skill at negotiation will make you invaluable to this team you passed your test when you brokered peace between veterans and the trainees. Terra your skill and knowledge of magic will make you a key asset in this mission you passed your test by healing Drake and Kane after they were wound by that imp that got into the fort some how. Lastly Luna your knowledge and skill in tracking and herbs will keep all of you safe to an extent on this mission you passed your test when you helped Terra heal Drake and Kane because you helped them even though you think they didn't deserve help. You see we have been testing each of you over the years secretly in case some of the things that have been happening lately ever started. The only reason that we haven't sent you four out on mission before is because not all of you had finished your training. It was common knowledge among the veterans and the other trainees that each of you had already past your tests.”

“So whats this mission you want to send us on?” asked Kane voicing the question bubbling in their minds to their surprise Arros answered.

“There have been reports of strange creatures appearing all over the kingdom. We have investigated these sighting and rumors and have deduced that these aren't regular monster sightings. There are a high number of these reports in the merchant city of Tarquilous.” As Arros stopped to take a breath Luna interjected.

“Wait isn't Tarquilous the center of all trade and commerce for the entire kingdom?”.

“Yes it is.” responded Arros “Also certain shipments are being attacked and destroyed a few miles away from the city. These shipments are vital for troop deployments and movements across the kingdom as long as these attacks continue moving the troops north to join Drakous in order to deal with the host gathering in the Frozen Barrens will take longer than usual. Both me and Serge have come to the same conclusion that these three seemingly unrelated events are linked in some way.”

“So that's what you want us to do.” said Drake a bit of realization in his voice “You want us four to go to Tarquilous and deal with whatever has been destroying the shipments, find out what exactly are these strange creatures being seen in Tarquilous and if they're dangerous and if they are, deal with them.”

"Yes that about sums it up.” spoke Serge “Now another matter and a few minor details that need to be discussed. First who will be you leader? Second this will be covert so you won't be traveling as Drakous members just regular travelers/mercenaries so we won't be able to send help or give you anything beyond some supplies, some horses and simple weapons and clothing beyond that getting to Tarquilous and dealing with the problems you will be on your own. Third Luna you will have to travel in regular clothing and have to leave your royal entrapments here.”

“Fine with me.” she responded looking at her brother and the rest of her group “Anything to protect the kingdom, it's people and my friends here at Drakous. Also I say that Drake should be our leader.” Agreement to her last statement rang through the group

“I expected as much.” spoke Arros “So Drake what's the plan?”

“The plan is simple we get to Tarquilous, figure out the problems there, solve them, and join the last shipment heading towards the army so we can help with the problem in the Frozen Barrens. I was planning on traveling light anyways. So Kane, Terra and Luna go and get your things packed and meet me at the stables we have a long journey ahead of us,” without further comment the young warriors left the chamber.

As the doors closed behind the young warriors Arros muttered sorrowfully “I hoped to save them from this fate.” the rest of the Council except Serge were all ready out of earshot, leaving to attend to their various duties about the fort to prepare for the coming battle.

Serge walked over to the depressed prince and said “I know my friend I know. Unfortunately this path was unavoidable. Hopefully Drake can change something so that we will all have a chance to be together again in this chamber,” walking over to a page that had just arrived with a map. “So until the prophecy comes to pass we have work to do to ensure that we will beat Mallek,” taking the map and walking to the table, after thanking the page.

“Of course Mallek is the primary danger, I just hope that his three generals died when they fell off that glacier cliff all those years ago,” spoke Arros leaning over the map that Serge had just unrolled. “So how much do we know about Mallek's forces?” he asked pointing on the Northern most section of the map that was the Frozen Barrens.

“As far as our scouts can tell his forces consist of mostly ice deamons, imps, elements and a few humes. The scouts have also reported on seeing his current Generals and from their descriptions I've been able to find some references to them and they appear to be the three. Kraylis, Lieka and Khorso and the scouts have reported infighting between Kraylis and Lieka which is to our advantage,” responded Serge.

“I guess it was to much to expect that they'd have fallen to their deaths,” huffed Arros. “Hopefully we'll be able to finally beat Mallek this time around.”

Chapter 3:

The others had made good time packing and preparing and were waiting for Drake at the stables. Drake had taken longer than expected because he had to talk to the staff to get the supplies his group would need to make Tarquilous.

“Took you long enough,” complained Kane, “thought we might have to leave without you.” Drake noted that Kane wore his dark travel pants, plain tan shirt with a darker leather jacket over it, plain leather boots and his sword on his left hip with his hunting knife on the right one.

“You wouldn't have made it far without the supplies now would you.” spoke Drake dropping the huge bags of supplies before the others. He saw that Terra wore forest green pants and shirt with her hair tied back in a braid, her simple boots made her look like a tree and he staff which was strapped across her back had a little shine as if it had be recently polished.

“Tarquilous is a ten day hard ride from here.” Luna spoke as she and the others started to pack the supplies in their saddle bags. Drake noticed that she had indeed left her more royal and identifiable clothing behind. She wore simple light brown traveling clothes her remaining hair was tied back in a ponytail, she had her knives on her two at shoulders and two at her waist. If he hadn't known better he might of mistaken her as just another traveler.

Drake, himself, had taken off his armor and stored it in his saddle bags now all he had on was his simple buckskin pants and matching shirt. He had his sword strapped across his back he hated having it bounce on his hip whenever he rode. His shield hung from the saddle in front of him ready just in case it was necessary.

Traveling to Tarquilous was easier than expected. They made it there in only seven days, which is a feat in and of itself, considering they still had all four horses. It helped that they had Terra along because she kept casting spells to keep the horses from dropping under them. The only problem they had was on the fourth day. They'd set up camp and were sitting around the fire talking about what they would do once they reached Tarquilous.

“I think it'd be best if we split up once we've arrived at Tarquilous.” spoke Drake to the group.

“Why should we split up. Serge said each of us was key to finishing this mission.” responded Terra.

“I agree with Terra strange as that sounds she has a point Drake.” piped up Luna. The only one who hadn't spoken up was Kane

“What do you think Kane?” asked Drake calmly as he watched out into the darkness around their camp where he had seen movement.

“I believe you're right Drake splitting up would be the best idea to finish this mission quickly so we can help Arros and Serge in the Frozen Barrens.” Kane answered as he brought his head up from looking at the fire just in time to see a pair of eyes staring at them from the darkness.

“Thanks for the support Kane.” spoke Drake softly “Kane nailed my reason for wanting to split up on the head.” directing the last of his statement towards Luna and Terra while he tightened his grip on his sword.

“Fine.” sighed the girls simultaneously.

“This will be how we split up Terra, Luna you two are going to shadow the shipments and help in the defense of them. While Kane and I deal with what's in Tarquilous,” as Drake spoke Luna had noticed that Drake was looking out into the darkness around them and had tightened his grip on his sword.

"What are you looking at Drake?" she asked curious of what could get this kind of intense focus from Drake. By this time Kane had settled into a crouch and was turning slowly making his back towards the fire.

"Those shadows are moving." he answered indicating the direction with his head as he hefted his shield onto his left arm. He had settled into a half crouch and was turning around drawing his blade as he did.

As Drake answered Luna and Terra turned slightly to see where Drake had indicated. Both noticed that the shadows were weaving among each other in an unnatural pattern and their hands reflexively and instinctual started going towards their weapons.

As Drake completed his turn his sword was all the way out oh it's sheath one of the rushed out of the pattern before he get in a defensive postion and slammed him in the chest. Drake put his hands out to stead himself. The creature then jumped over the fire and ran back into the moving mass of shadows. In the time it took for that to occur Terra had gotten a look a the creature and she whispered the name to her companions in a voice filled equally with wonder and fear.

"Shadow wolves." As if beckoned by their name the broke into a dead run at the heroes snarling and snapping as they did so. At the shear number of wolves the young heroes palled in fright knowing that there were to many but something strange occurred.

A wolf took a crossbow bolt to the heart, another took one to the eye, the beasts started to drop left and right. Just as the beasts started going down spheres of light started flying completely destroying the beasts where they had fallen or stood just a moment before. The heroes followed the direction the spheres were coming from and saw an archer firing crossbow bolts into the beasts near them, a mage sending the spheres directly after the bolts and a warrior keeping the shadow wolves away from the other two. Terra was the first to snap out of shock and started casting her own light spells to help deal with the shadow wolves.

“What are you three waiting for? An invitation?” she snapped “Start helping deal with these things.”

Drake and Kane leaped into action simultaneously weaving through arrows and spells dealing blows to wolves left and right with their swords and knives or bashing them with a shield. Luna drew the two knives from around her waist and set about defending Terra. Suddenly a massive sphere of light appeared over the battlefield and sent out pulses of pure light destroying the remaining wolves. Just as soon as the battle began it was over the heroes looked over at their rescuers and watched the mage swoon just to be caught by the archer and the warrior.

The archer and the warrior lifted the mage between them and walked towards the heroes.

“Hey got some space for our friend?” yelled the warrior with a hint of amusement in his voice. Up close they finally got a good look at their rescuers. The warrior and the archer where about the same height and the mage was a little shorter than the others. “She needs a rest after using so much energy to get rid of the shadow wolves.”

“We have plenty of space here for your friend.” replied Drake as he took in their rescuers.

The warrior wore black armor with inlaid silver markings that seemed to shimmer and shift in the firelight, a leather belt that had a few pouches and a book strapped to it, a worn leather baldric off of which hung a long curved dagger and an elegant empty scabbard and a helm in the likeness of a roaring dragon. His sword was in his hand on the side that wasn't helping support the mage it appeared to be a swirling mix of warm honey colored gold and frightening obsidian giving it a look of great anger and care. The only thing more striking about the warrior is that on the center of his breastplate was the only silver marking that didn't change it looked like a type of wyvern.

The archer in comparison was not as striking but he had the same sort of presence that made you look at him. He wore simple dark leather clothing like most people who lived in the kingdom did. What truly drew Drake's attention was his crossbow it looked the same as the other crossbows in storage back at the fort, but what made it unique was the cylindrical drum in the center and that the archer had a bandolier of these strange drums strapped across his chest. The archer had close cropped dark brown hair and squarish features.

“Make some room.” ordered Drake as the men laid their friend on the ground. As the two men laid the mage on the ground he noticed a strange expression on both Luna's and Terra's faces. He didn't have much time to ponder this when he noticed the mage out of the corner of his eye. She had long brown hair with a strip of blond in it. Her skin was much darker than his or Terra's. She wore silver and gold robes and the staff that the archer laid next to her looked like sun bleached bone.

“Will she be okay?” asked Kane who seemed to be deep in his own thoughts.

“She'll be fine in the morning.” spoke the archer surprising the group with his deep voice. “She just needs rest after over exerting herself today.”

“I have a feeling that whoever sent those shadow wolves didn't want you four to reach your destination.” spoke the warrior as he took off his helm. Even without the helm the warrior was still an impressive sight with his tanned skin, shoulder length brown hair and brown eyes that seemed to be watching something in the distance.

“What do you mean sent?” asked Drake curiously.

“What Strath means is that shadow wolves usually won't go close to people unless their forced to by someone with at least some magical aptitude.” answered the archer.

“Reading my mind again aren't you Baroc.” spoke Strath humorously as he turned towards Drake and company. “Well Baroc summed it up pretty well, but what I find interesting is why you four were the targets.”

“It could have something to do with the prophecy Strath. I also have a feeling She is behind this attack,” answered Baroc seriously.

“True it might have something to do with the prophecy and if She is behind this then we've got no time to waste.” concurred Strath.

“Hold it what prophecy and who is this She you two keep referring to?” asked Kane with panic in his voice.

“We can't tell you the prophecy it's on a need to know bases and you four don't need to know and the She we keep referring to is Mallek's right hand and if you ever meet her we suggest you don't look directly at her,” answered Baroc calmly.

“I know who you three are.” piped Luna suddenly before Kane could ask more questions. “Your Strath the Dragon-knight, Baroc the Wise.” she said pointing towards both of Strath and Broc and then pointing to the unconscious mage. “And that's Tesera the Mighty. All of you fought in the last war against Mallek. You three actually fought his three generals directly.” Now that she had aired her suspicion, Drake now realized why they seemed familiar to him. These were some of the greatest heroes to every fight for the people of the kingdom.

“You hit the nail on the head, young one,” Strath confirmed while laughing. “Though I didn't fight his Generals that was Baroc, Tesera and Throth. I fought Mallek's right hand and her dragon at that time. Much of this is a long story which I may tell you four when we meet again. Right now though we need to deal with the threat in the Frozen Barrens and you four have to go help Tarquilous.”

“How do you know about our mission to Tarquilous?” asked Terra skeptically.

“We are old friends of Serge and Arros. So we get reports about what's going on in and around the kingdom. Also Serge asked us to meet with you four and give you some advice,” answered Baroc a little bored with the preceding. “Which we have done. So here's the warning we need to give.”

“You four have many challenges that each of you'll face in Tarquilous, we also believe that She is there in Tarquilous,” finished Strath. “Now the only thing left to do is get some sleep before it gets light.”

“Shouldn’t we set a watch in case we get attacked again?” asked Kane as he peered nervously into the darkness around the camp.

“We don't have any need to especially after that spell Tesera cast. That would have sent any creature for about two miles running in the opposite direction,” answered Strath as he set out his bedroll.

Chapter 4:

I hate those arrogant heroes.” spoke Starterra “They keep ruining a perfectly good plan.”

She had watched her enemies show up and defeat the shadow wolves she had sent to deal with the Drakous members, through the eyes of the wolves.

“It's about time I made a report to Mallek.” she spoke to the doppelganger in front of her, they never talked back but it felt good to talk to something. It had taken six months to replace important officials and city guards in order to operate freely in Tarquilous. She was always amused how easy it was to control the minds and wills of people with her looks especially when she wore a low cut dress. The women were harder to corrupt then the men but she still did it. She inspected the newest batch of doppelgangers with her green eyes.

She walked up to the mirror on the wall and look at her self in it. She wore a silver dress, her raven black hair hung just past her shoulders and tanned skin stood out against the silver of the dress. After admiring herself in the mirror she stole a look at her sword and bow which hung on the wall next to her armor and arrows. With all her usual rituals complete she waved a hand in front of it and an image of Khorso appeared. He was tall and dark skinned and as always he wore leather armor with his sword strapped across his back.

“Well hello Khorso. Where is Mallek?” she asked a little surprised that Mallek had let Khorso answer the mirror.

“He's disciplining Kraylis and Lieka. They were at it again,” answered Khorso offhandedly. “So report are the newbie heroes dead?”

“Unfortunately no, Strath and company arrived and saved them,” Starterra answered bitterly.

Khorso swore at the news about Strath “I thought they were dead or living with elves and dwarfs in retirement. At least that’s what the spies have been saying for the last few years.”

“Then your spies are either idiots or traitors. As I've seen Strath a few times in Tarquilous over the years I'm lucky he's never noticed me.”

“What's this I hear about spies, traitors and Strath?” asked a new voice some what agitated by this news.

As Mallek came into view the scar on the side of his face was the first thing Starterra saw, along with the pale blue robes that he wore. His blond hair laid flat on his head and his piercing blue eyes bored into both Khorso and Starterra. Behind him trailed Kraylis and Lieka both looking cowed.

Kraylis wore her black leather armor, her dark hair tied back in a ponytail and had both of her knives strapped to her waist. She and Lieka had the same tanned skin and brown eyes which wasn't surprising because they were sisters. Lieka was wearing her dark purple robes, with her light brown hair hanging around her shoulders and her large battleaxe at her waist. They had been the best of sisters up until they had lost to Tesera and Baroc and started blaming one another for their loss.

“Just talking about the fact that our spies had misreported Strath's location to us,” Khorso answered cautiously.

“So I take it the young Drakous members aren't dead,” spook Mallek evenly and calmly which normally meant someone was about to have a horrible experience. “And that you have failed again Starterra.”

“My plan would have worked if Strath hadn't intervened and if I had reliable reports on his movement throughout the kingdom,” she complained.

“It doesn't matter!” roared Mallek in response. “Your plan failed. You failed. So I'm sending Kraylis and Lieka to assist in the elimination of the young heroes.”

“Yes my Lord,” she responded a little embarrassed because she had forgotten that Mallek was one of the few people alive immune to her power.

deathlord45 -> RE: A Broken Fate (5/1/2013 17:54:20)

Chapter 5:

Upon waking Terra found the others still fast asleep except for Tesera. “Your pretty strong little one,” spoke Tesera looking up from the food she was cooking. “You remind me of your mother.”

“You knew my mother?” Terra asked curiously and cautiously.

“She was head strong in her youth. Quite powerful and skilled, actually she was the pride of her family and the mage order. She thought that she could have beaten Starterra, the Dragon-charmer without help. She probably could have if it wasn't for the dragon that Starterra had with her at the time,” answered Tesera her voice full of sorrow.

“What happened to her? How did she survive fighting both a Dragon-charmer and a dragon?” full of curiosity Terra asked.

“She wouldn't have if it wasn't for Strath. He had been fighting Mallek head to head and was winning but when he saw your mother in trouble he simply wounded Mallek and ran to help her. He killed the dragon before it could kill your mother who was unconscious from over exerting herself and turned to Starterra herself.”

“Strath killed a dragon but I thought he was a Dragon-knight? Why did he save my mother and only wound Mallek? How did he beat Starterra she's a Dragon-charmer which means she can control males?” Terra interrupted firing off questions.

“He isn't a Dragon-knight he's the last Dragon-knight. Starterra, him and Mallek are the last of the Dragon corps. It was very hard for him to kill a dragon but not impossible. He was capable of leaving Mallek wounded and helping your mother because she was one of the pivotal points in prophecy and she was a forest elf. Also him, Mallek and a few others are completely immune to Starterra power due to their heritage. If you'd remember your lessons you'd know that the Dragon corps were all descended from dragons. He did beat Starterra but she escaped on another dragon that she had in reserve.”

Shock ran through Terra at Tesera's news. Her mother fighting in the war along side Strath and the others she could believe, but an elf that was a joke it had to be. She had no elfish features or powers she was a simple human. As if she could hear Terra's thoughts Tesera spoke “You may look like a full blood human but you aren't. Your eyes change color depending on your mood a common trait among our kind. Some half-elves do get the extreme strength, speed etc Khorso is a perfect example, but most simply get the color changing eyes.”

“What do you mean by 'our kind'?” asked Terra a little suspicious at this point.

Smiling Tesera answered calmly “Mixed elves.” Looking at Terra's expression she continued “You do my sister, your mother, proud for not trusting of such sudden news. She took after our father a forest elf while I took after our mother an ethereal elf.”

“So your my aunt?” Terra asked hesitantly.

“Yes I am if you don't trust me ask Strath when he gets up.” As if by magic Strath started to get up

“Breakfast ready yet.” he said groggily running his hand through his hair.

“Almost but you have to wait till everyone else is up,” replied Tesera a little amused.

“Fine.” he groaned in exasperation turning towards Terra, and asked her if she had any questions, like he could read her expression.

“Yes I do,” she replied, “Is Tesera my aunt?”

Looking between the two women he spoke with heavyhearted a tone “So you told her." directing his comment to Tesera who only nodded "Yes, she is your aunt.” he spoke to Terra at which point he got up saying “I'll be back for breakfast.” He then proceeded to trot into the woods with his sword.

“What's his problem?” asked Terra curiously.

“He has no family left. He lost his parents when he was young and was left with his little sister. When Mallek and Starterra turned on the Dragon corps he was out on a mission and when he returned the village where he, his sister, her husband along with their new born lived it was destroyed. He had searched the wreckage for days looking for his sister and her family on a slim chance that they had survived but it was a fruitless search. That was fifteen years ago. When he found out it was Mallek and Starterra who had destroyed the village he swore revenge. Which he got years later at the end of a long hard journey and the war.” Tesera responded in a soft caring voice. Terra had just met a long lost family but she felt no joy because of what she had learned about Strath losing his entire family.

A few minutes later the others got up. “Where's Strath?” Drake asked a little worried because he had wanted to talk to him more.

“He's off remembering his family which could only mean,” answered Baroc addressing Tesera he continued, “You told her” pointing at Terra “that your her aunt.”

At the accusation she only nodded. Drake and Kane looked between Terra and Tesera in shock until Luna asked hesitantly “Is this true that you two are related?”

To her surprise it was Strath that answered from behind her “Yes it is true that Tesera and Terra are related,” walking past her and getting food he continued, “And Terra's mother died from sorrow years ago after finding that she had run away. Before any of you interrupt I have a gift to give her from her mother.” he pulled a small nicely wrapped box out of his pack and handed it to Terra.

Stunned and furious Tesera questioned Strath “Why did my sister trust you to deliver this 'gift' and not me?”

“You weren't around at the time remember you'd been sent away from the city by the mage order in order to hide her condition from you. I sent a request to the order that you be brought back to the city to say good-bye but they turned it down saying that you were working on some important project and that your sister would make a recovery in a few weeks,” he answered calmly watching remembrance dawn in her eyes at which point he turned to Terra. “Your mother loved you more than life itself and said you'd know what to do with the gift when the time came.”

Chapter 6:

After breakfast both groups had packed up and were ready to go their separate ways. Terra had opened the box and was know wearing the necklace that was inside. It was a simple carving of a tree inlaid with gold and silver.

As the two groups got ready to leave Strath brought out a second necklace that was much more intricate than the one he had delivered for Terra's dead mother. There were three intertwined dragons one gold, one silver and one was obsidian and each held a jewel in it's claw. The gold one had a topaz, the silver one an opal and the obsidian one held an onyx.

Speaking to everyone he sounded weary but confident and resolute like he had thought this through. “I've carried this long enough,” holding up the necklace for all to see “This is a family heirloom that I had gone in search of before the death of my sister and her family. I had hoped to give it to my nephew or niece to protect him or her until he was strong enough to protect him/ herself and others. I've carried this out of memory but now I think this belongs where it will do the most good. I sense dragon blood in you Drake.” he turned to Drake as if this were some solemn ancient ceremony. “Drake will you accept this gift from an elder?”

“Yes I will accept this gift.” he answered his voice a little shaky.

“Will you up hold the ways of the Dragon corps? The ways of the Dragon-knights? And swear to assist in the defense of both humes and dragons?” asked Strath with a voice of iron.

“Yes I will hold up the ways of the Dragon corps, the Dragon-knights and I shall help both humes and dragons.” answered Drake with more strength and conviction in his voice.

Then Strath placed the necklace around Drake's neck and proclaimed “You are now a member of the Dragon corps and the Dragon-knights so named by one of the last members of an order ancient and once strong.”

Drake held up the necklace to get a better look at it when it started glowing with a warm light that touched all around as if it wanted to encompass all of them to protect them. When this happened the look on Strath's face went from resolute and calm to shocked and uncertain.

Looking at Strath he asked a little stunned and awed “What just happened?”

Answering that question looked incredibly difficult for Strath. “That shouldn't have happened,” shaking his head still shocked he continued “That only should have happened if you were related to me and my family.”

“You mean I'm like your distant cousin or something like that?” asked Drake a little incredulous.

“We didn't have cousins. Me and my sister were the last in our family and it'd have to be a blood relation to.” answered Strath a little confused as his mind tried to figure out why that had happened.

“You said it yourself that you have no cousins and your only known blood relatives were your sister and her new born. Which means that Drake is your nephew.” Luna put in trying to help resolve this as fast as possible.

As he responded his voice filled with sorrow “That's impossible the village was destroyed completely. I never found anything indicating that they had escaped.”

“That was sixteen years ago maybe they did escape and all the destruction covered their tracks,” Terra put in “Also Drake is-”

As she stopped to take a breath Drake himself finished the sentence “Sixteen.”

“Of course he's your nephew Strath I noticed similarities between you two last night when we joined their camp,” Baroc put in suddenly “I wasn't entirely sure till just now.”

“He's right Strath not only do you two share physical traits but your spirits have the same glow to them.” Tesera put in concurring with Baroc.

Suddenly Kane broke out laughing “Well both of you now have a family,” he said in between fits of laughter and turned to Baroc and asked “So you some long lost relative of mine?”

To everyone's disbelief Baroc cracked a grin and said jokingly “Yes I'm your godfather.” What really shocked the girls is when all the guys busted out laughing like a bunch of hyenas.

After the laughter died down the groups parted ways with raised spirits and family members promising to tell one another stories even the sad ones.

“Well that meeting sure was...interesting.” Kane commented with a giant grin on his face.

“Don't be so glum my friend.” Drake said as he rode up and clapped Kane on the back.

“Hey maybe we can get Baroc to adopt you.” Terra jested also grinning like Kane and Drake were.

“Oh lay off him you two.” Luna scolded Drake and Terra grinning just like them.

At the scolding he winked at his friend saying “I think Luna has a crush on you Kane.”

“I do not.” she retorted to Drake who looked like he was about to fall out of the saddle from laughing to much.
