Nexus... -> Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/18/2013 15:16:07)

Here goes--

EpicDuel is in a testing phase, and as such, I think balance needs some testing. We have seen nerfs, buffs, and more nerfs, and nothing seems to work. Old players are discontent that the game is not what it used to be, and new players dislike the fact that the RNG hates them, failing to realize it hates everyone. I think its time the developers stopped with the content, stopped with the wars, and focused ONLY on balance for ONE month. During this time, the design team could work on new skill icons, and update animations that have become outdated, and the story team (person?), could work on planning out future events and story lines.

So what month?!?
Probably not June, maybe July, but August could work...really any month that the developers are comfortable with.

What kind of changes might we see?
-PTR Server
-Skill Tree Changes (moving skills to different tiers, changing tier linking, etc.)
-Hp/Ep increment experimentation
-Base stat changes
-Multiplier changes (damage multipliers of *100, instead of *10 allows for better rounding, and more accurate damage numbers)
-Changes to skill requirements and improvements
-Defense/Resistance increment experimentation
-New/Altered cores
-RNG Modifications (block, crit, stun, deflect chance etc.)
-Skill Tree Customization
-New stats
-New/Updated Skills
-Changes to Focus (give it a downside, or make it less rewarding)
-Various other changes I cannot think of or have missed

What could/would this achieve?
Hopefully it would get a lot of our suggested ideas into the game. I think the month would have to start off with the launch of a PTR. The developers could constantly funnel balance changes to the PTR, and get them tested by the user base. This would in turn, allow for a quicker turn around, and a better and faster idea of what was working, and what was not.

Alright, why a month?
A month to start...I think. If the developers can get all of their/our balance ideas to a PTR in a month, then that would be it. They could then start moving the things they liked over to the main build of the game. If however, they needed more time, I think they should continue until they are satisfied with the state of PvP in the game.

What are you thinking? How would this help?
I think this would allow for an amazing amount of productivity in a short amount of time. I know the developers are constantly telling us that they are so short on time, that they just cannot fit balance into every update, and cannot release the major balance changes that we want. Hopefully this would fix that issue! By focusing on balance for an entire month, the developers would be working solely on fixing the very core of this game...Player vs Player interactions. It would open the doors for new features and game modes, and would pave the way for a new EpicDuel.

Please give me some feedback, I would love to hear what all of you think. I would especially love to hear from a developer or mod about how realistic they think something like this would be.

Thanks!

Prophet

You can never have a perfect world in a PvPMMO. However, I do think the staff should take some time to balance things.

As far as I know, I never used the word perfect, and therefore I totally agree with what you are saying...perfect balance will never be achieved. However, there is definitely room for balance to progress to a place where class winrates are all fairly similar, and for the most part, everyone is content.

nope not happening, wouldn't do much

Stabilis -> RE: Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/18/2013 19:07:48)

^

This would do very much, but it would be unlikely if the team does not work on a monthly basis as they presently work weekly.

Kd -> RE: Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/18/2013 19:22:12)

Okay, but with summer coming soon they won't do it for a while even if they do it at all. Summer is when people can play the most, ergo they put in as much content as possible- i.e. things to buy, do, etc. because it means more money for ed. And to be honest, I don't really want to have no knew content for a month when I can play the most either. I'm not against balance changes or the other things you listed, but do we actually think they would do many of those things listed either?

August.

We should already have this.

Most suggested ideas are bad, and come from people with no real experience with game design.

This is what they should have done as soon as they left Gamma. Everything up to the end of gamma was a testing phase. Delta and onward are releases.

Not quite. There needs to be both a private and a public testing realm. NOT on the dev server. Dev server and testing server shouldn't even be the same right now, let alone with a REAL balance testing system in place.
As i'm sure you're aware, some people are more qualified than others.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. They need more staff. The reason that they are so short on time for balancing is because they have nobody in the dev team with the passion and in game experience required for balance that remains fun.
The fact that the two people who are in charge of balancing are programmers is one of the biggest faults in the staff setup.
If you are programming AND balancing, you should be ONLY programming balance.

Programming and balancing are both EXTREMELY time consuming, and are much much more volatile than artwork or storyline. Making a mistake in code OR balance will throw the entire game off. Making a mistake in art does very little and just needs a minor fix.

Hire a dedicated balancer.

^This was well answered. I agree with Xendran. Perhaps a month won't be enough and the devs might not even do it. Who knows?

Hi

When did the developers state that testing officially ended, and the game was "released" (ie. 1.0)

quote:

Only a month?

Read the entire post, especially the section that reads "Alright, why a month?". He states, that a month will be sufficient to start with, and the developers can progress onwards from their if they need more time.

quote:

August.

Yes, I agree

quote:

Also agreed, but putting it at the beginning of the testing month would allow the devs some time to set it up, and work out procedures.

I believe he speaks of the "good" ideas, and not "all" of the suggested ideas.

Agreed. After leaving the private server it could be moved to the PTR, and then into the game.

I don't think Nexus ever gets his hopes up.

Yes it is time consuming, but it needs to happen, and I think this would be a good start.

goldslayer1 -> RE: Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/18/2013 22:26:22)

i think its a good idea if they just take a break from the usual release and focus on 1 thing.

atleast until they can get a more stable "balance" or something better than we have now.
then they can continue with other game improvements (like factions improvements) that aren't balance related after the balance updates.

Off-Topic: would anyone know nexus' FaceBook by any chance? (PM me if u do)
he sent me a message but he is banned so i cant reply.

ReconnaisX -> RE: Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/18/2013 22:41:41)

We really do need that PTR server. I've suggested it before.

RageSoul -> RE: Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/19/2013 0:19:03)

The process is simple and has some complications but it's very time consuming and yet worth it, so i don't care if they take a break of doing some unnecessary stuff ( art and stuff ) and would focus on balance instead . Been wanting to play ED again but the things they're doing currently to the game isn't helping , thus i ended up going outside and go to the nearest internet cafe to play another cool game ( since my laptop is crap ), so yes , i'm with this idea.

ur going to fail -> RE: Lets Balance EpicDuel (5/19/2013 0:33:45)

nexus is banned don't except a reply.

Anyway, the idea of focusing on one thing is great and that is really all he was saying in this post. I'm sure he wants to say more, but obviously some things will overshadow the other.

As for the PTR sever, if it was on the dev's list it would have been put into action by now. Tournaments have been suggested since early beta and tbh, they weren't #1 on their to-do list. They were more like in the bottom 3, and look even they are in game now. Point is if the had dev's had any intention to use a PTR sever it would have been in game by now. They will give us the regular answer as always that we've all heard practel and others say which is (something along the lines): "Just cuz its on a large scale doesn't mean it will work" "We know what we are doing" "Balance team is highly qualified and highly experienced, we know what we are doing" "Bare with us, we work hard to bring you weekly releases, these things take time".

List goes on quite a bit.

The one thing worth saying to dev's here is: Focus on one thing at a time, just cuz the car (symbolizing balance) is quarter full on gas doesn't mean you can make the 50 miles. The phrase 'let it be' cannot be forced and should never be mandatory.
