This is a thread for thoughts on the skill as I'm quite interested in other people's ideas and opinions about this. Since this is in the general discussion, it should not be focused on balance at all and should just be relevant to uses of the skill, its abilities, etc...

Here's my thoughts:

Summary:
Bunker buster is a unique and strategic skill which can be used for ensured kills, "invisible" threats, psychological pressure, and a solid damaging skill that improves with a very useful stat. It has many advanced strategies which can be applied with it, but only if used correctly. One of these advanced strategies is the psychological threat that bunker presents.

Special Properties of Bunker Buster:
-The 25% fixed critical hit chance can be used for "invisible" threats, as mentioned before, to catch opponents off-guard in clutch moments and get the crit to do considerably more damage and win. A low-level bunker that crits on an opponent can easily take half of their max HP if they're a tank-type build.
-Psychological pressure can also be applied with bunker buster because people are afraid of the potential high critical hit chance and will do whatever they can to avoid a death from it. This could include healing early and wasting a portion of the recovery skill/core, or unnecessarily buffing, debuffing, or taking energy. This psychological pressure can be used as a strategic point for mercenaries to misdirect the attention of the opponent and catch them off-guard with another skill such as a surprise stun from maul, a sudden berzerker, or an unexpected rage, especially if adrenaline has been invested in as well.
-Bunker buster has very solid damage with a large damage range, meaning that it can be used freely to simply deal a lot of damage while not consuming that much energy, particularly at lower skill point investment levels such as levels 4 and 5. Mixed with static smash, a level 7+ static smash on a focus merc can easily replenish enough energy for another use of bunker again at these lower levels.
-Bunker buster also increases with technology, a very useful stat that increases the resistance of a player while also increasing their deflection chance. However, the damage does not scale at an extremely fast rate so raw investment into technology typically isn't worth it if it's simply for increased bunker damage.

Previously, if I was a Merc, I wouldn't have considered using any skill points for Bunker Buster at all, since it could be wiped out by a ~40 EMP. Now, though, with Static Smash, Bunker Buster can be used possibly up to 4 times a battle.

It's even more effective if you have the Infernal Interdictor which can add Massive Strike damage to a possible critical hit.

High tech --> More tank-iness and increased Bunker Buster damage. This skill is not OP, but its one of the best, IMO.

@Jekyll: I agree that it's not exactly overpowered, but it's definitely one of the best active skills currently in the game. However, as I stated in my original post, tech does improve damage but should not be invested in for the sole purpose of increased bunker potency because the scaling rate is fairly slow.

LOL back in delta I remember this merc who put almost all his stats into tech and had an infernal interdictor. Let's just say it didn't end well for me and my partner ...

@Dual Thrusters: That was back when infernal interdictor's massive strike added around 5-10 more damage per crit in most cases. Plus, I wouldn't count 2v2 as a legitimate measure of balance in any way or form mainly because it depends heavily on the opposing team and on your own.

I still stand firm with what I said about tech not being worth the investment simply for bunker damage. Like, more than 5 tech points gives you 1 bunker damage more and 1 more resist, whereas you could stick it in HP, EP, dex, or support.

The good days when it was fun. Tried to make it work in Omega but it doesn't work ;'(.

I remember doing that! then they made infernal weapon worthless by nerfing it's crit bonus into oblivion then making a core that completely nullifies it... worst decision EVER.
Love the art on it though! especially the staff version. On a side note Bunker buster has to be one of my more memorable skills due to making a build that was all "BLOW STUFF UP"
and pretty much used only ranged weapons due to timing on cd's and stuff working together to never have to melee strike unless the battle went on for a long long time.


why are you forgetting plasma cannon!? why does nobody think of that skill I used a 5-focus BM back when str fireball bms roamed around and DESTROYED with that cannon!
then they nerfed it instead of strength and made it worthless -.-
