Is there a way to actually apply for those criteria, or are they just picked by the staff at will?

They're picked by the staff when the person displays those traits (Being Helpful, Friendly, etc.) The person displaying those traits will be monitored and if they keep displaying them, the title will be given to the person. The person won't know anything about being monitored, it'll be a total surprise for them. Here is a quote from one of the forum staff, it basically says the same thing as above but y'know, this is kind of the official one. quote: Anyone who meets the requirements will be watched carefully. Anyone who continues to meet the requirements will be rewarded with the title. It will be a surprise to the one recieving it, only certain members of the forum staff will know. To add to what Char has explained, here's a few quotes which can further describe the titles. quote: Creative/!: This title is mainly given to members of the creative boards (Creative Arts/Legends and Lore). In order to receive this title, members must not only be creative, but also helpful. This title usually comes with avatar upload (at the moderator's discretion). A variation of this title is the "Very Creative/!" title. Friendly/!: This title is given to forum users who go out of their way to be kind and friendly to other users. They have a positive attitude and are actively participating in the board. They do not meet the requirement for a Helpful title but, because of their contributions to the community deserve recognition. Constructive/!: This title is given to forum users who consistently contribute in a positive manner to the threads they post in. They have a positive attitude and are actively participating in the board. They do not meet the requirement for a Helpful title but, because of their contributions to the community deserve recognition. Contest Titles: Some forum contests include a title as a prize. These contests are not run frequently and will be announced on the forum homepage when they are being run. Examples of these include: Minion of _____ (Zorbak, Kabroz, etc) and Scavenge hunt winner07. - Forum Rules & Resources > Forum Ranks, Groups, and Titles The only title which (technically speaking) can be applied for are the "Contest Titles". Although they're not frequent, they're given to forumites who've won a contest or something of that nature. Considering there are no specific qualifications for a contest title, anyone can get it.
