Death Lord -> Badges (1/9/2014 1:47:12)

I've been on a lot of forums and all of them have a badge system such as Newbie, Artist, Writer etc.I think that implementing a similar badge system which one could see on checking someone's profile page would be great to have.

We already have a system of ranks, groups, and titles. A badge system could easily result in a competition between forumites or otherwise unnecessary spam in attempt to get the most badges.

That's true, but the "Ranks, groups and titles"system excludes many people.Isn't the forum supposed to be a community where everyone can come together and have fun?
IMO, having badges would probably cause more newbies to actively participate in discussions, contests etc.

Not entirely. It includes: helpful, constructive, friendly, creative, role players, junior role players, pedia masters, contest winners, etc.

For example

Newbie = New Member
Artist = Creative
Writer = Creative/Roleplayer

You're correct in that sense, but I still stand by the fact that many members are excluded from any ranks, titles etc, if one doesn't count New Member and Member as a title.

I support this idea

Once I was a member of the basically official Bionicle forum where different masks represented the amount of time that we have been here. I think it would be good to have the badges like that as Death Lords suggested. It would be more inclusive as all players will have their chance as time passes and there is no question of competition since no one has the power to speed up time. We could also have badges to show what part of the forums a certain member contributes the most to. Eg. Dragon for contributing mostly in the DFGD. That way it is easier to figure what game each member plays the most and where to find them when not in the Forum Games ect. This would be yet another badge implement that cannot be contested for since it just signifies where on the forums you usually are, not what you've done.

@sithdragon.Those are actually some great ideas.Having a badge depicting the total time since account creation is a great idea.I'm not sure how the different forum section badge would work though? Will it depend on the no of posts in that section or something else?

Anything based on post count really isn't plausible. Not only would that possible lead to spam but threads are auto deleted in many sections over time, this means your count fluctuates.

Rather then titles you would probably be better off with avatars(which is closer to badges), finding a way to lock them based on something(time etc.) would be the hard part.
The indvidual could then decide if they wanted to use the special avatar or not.

IMO while it seems like a nice idea, you are just going to have people seeking the "badges" this means it can't be based on anything they can affect, post count etc. Rewards someone for doing something not because they want it. However if you use something like "time" then you have a visible distinction newbies vs veterans, you do not want to divide the community while trying to improve it.

....
All that side it has to be physically possible to do, that is the real question.

Death Lord -> RE: Badges (1/10/2014 13:23:39)

@afterlifex I like the idea of being able to get an lockable special/custom avatar after reaching a certain no of posts, but as you mentioned in your post, people would just spam to reach the required no of posts.

Although the time related title might demarcate a clear line between newbies and veterans, it kinda seems like a reward given to people for their commitment to the forums and aqw.

In the end though, all these ideas have to be possible for them to be applied.
