Chaosweaver Amon -> 'Writer's Request Shops'? (2/7/2014 9:57:55)

I had a thought while browsing through the 'Legends of Art' threads, and seeing all of the art request shops. Well I was thinking, why not have a Writer's request shop section? For those who may have a story in mind, but perhaps might not have the words to write it? As in, some people may not consider themselves 'good writers' and those who's style they enjoy reading could write the story for them, in their style? Would this be possible?

For example, say a person wants to write a backstory on a hero raised on a farm, but they just don't know how to 'thicken' it well enough, so that they think others will enjoy it. They go to one of these shops, give some basics on chapters and such, then the writer they have chosen can write it.

Is there any reason why this couldn't be implemented? As far as I can tell, it doesn't break any Forum rules.

Hmmm, I don't think anyone has really thought about this. We did have a idea swap thread where someone posted an idea they had for a story, but really didn't have an interest in actually writing it. They figured someone may be able to use it. I may think on this a bit more.

For what it's worth, I like this idea. I wouldn't really benefit from it, but there are others who I know will.

In my Creative Writing class we had a Secret Santa activity where we'd write stories for other people about stuff they request. You'd write down your name and a one-sentence concept for the story you want on a piece of paper and then write the story.

I wrote an amusing story about an elephant off the prompt: a story about an animal lost in the forest. The elephant was very confused.

There were a couple of really neat prompts as well, such as "Write a story to be told at a campfire" and "write a fictional memoir" and one of the kids in the class, with a very pronounced love of certain works of high fantasy, wanted "A STORY ABOUT VIOLENCE" (exact transcription). Reddit.'s /r/WritingPrompts has a few really cool prompts that you can submit and read responses to, often thought-provoking or relating to current events.

I think as long as it's not a "Writing Shop" or a "Writer's Request" board, it'll be fine. I'd prefer something closer to a Writing Prompts board, where you post a prompt and people respond to it with their stories, similar to Reddit's system.

Good idea, I never would have applied it to AEF. Kudos to you, Chaosweaver Amon.

Wow, how'd I miss this?

Well certainly Amon's idea is unique. But, I feel it's terribly close to what Critics in L&L do and yes, the one thread that Eukara mentioned.

I might not be getting the exact idea here but I'd like to see how it changes thing.

Good Job, Amon.

It's also something that could be made into a contest too. Forum based, but also a consideration.

Still thinking about this. Mostly because, life is busy and hates me right now.

A little flash fiction for you, Eukky. (just over 300 words) It may not be accurate, possibly not even in its prediction, but I had fun writing this as if your last sentence was a writing prompt.

Eukara Vox sat at her desk, drumming her fingers quietly on its familiar surface.

Suddenly a horrified look crossed her face. "Oh no!" she cried aloud, to nobody in particular. "What was the due date again? ...I think it's the 18th!" Fingers flew, and fears were confirmed. She set right to work, but the thought remained.

As the work continued, introduction completed and facts filling pages of white space, organizing thoughts and words and ideas into a coherent format, the seed of thought was quietly germinating. Thread tags quietly suggested themselves and disappeared. Announcements were subconsciously drafted, edited, and scrapped. And when Eukara lay her head to rest in the early hours of the morning, lists of possible rules and regulations seemed stamped onto her eyelids.

That night she dreamed of prompts and responses, of moderators to appoint and locations for a new board. In a surreal vision, she saw herself messaging administrators and webmasters, and the new board created.

She saw its golden age, the creation of new and exciting stories to original and unique prompts. She saw it come to life at her fingertips. She saw it die, ideas being posted once a month to an audience of one. She saw its rebirth, its high points, its low points, its problems, its mistakes. She saw the criticism, she saw the praise.

When she awoke and again worked on the paper in earnest, the seed had blossomed with new life. The idea that would not leave her mind cast roots into her attention. Her subconscious compared the suggestion with threads from the past, found similarities…and differences. She loaded up her browser, just once, avoiding distraction and temptation. Before she lost her nerve, her fingers swiftly tapped out and submitted a brief message.

“It would be one of a couple of contests run, considering we already have one going on right now in L&L.”

A contest?

Well, what can I say? Everybody loves a contest.

Also, Writer Request shops serve as fine challenges for the Shop Owners to try to write upto standards.

Really hyped up about this.

Oh wow...I didn't realize my idea was so highly thought of. A contest would be cool; perhaps a series of them every month or so? Maybe if they were successful enough a permanent 'version' could be found.

Arthur -> RE: 'Writer's Request Shops'? (3/17/2014 0:26:10)

No doubt this idea is definitely a great inspiration, Amon.

A number of contests is definitely going to pull some very talented writers to L&L.
