Trollok!!! -> Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 14:39:10)

Most people on these forums care greatly about the mechanics of the game. Of course proper balance is necessary for a PvP game like this, but one of AE's strengths has always been the story behind their games. But from what I've seen here, people don't care much for EpicDuel's storyline. I'm not bashing things like balance but if you look at the GD threads, you find NOTHING about storyline and even though this isn't the place for balance, you'll find about 10 balance threads anyway.

Do you think people even understand what's going on? Have they even read the character bios? It seems to me the only story aspect of the game that interests people is factions and the Exile vs. Legion conflict. But this interest is fruitless and filled with misunderstanding. For instance, there are some of the Legion I've seen referring to Alydriah as their mistress when based on the story, she has no love for either the Exiles nor Legion.

Frankly, I've found people's understanding of the story rather appalling. What do you think? Are you one of those people? Do you even care about story or are you content with just battling?

Scyze -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 14:46:36)

What is EpicDuel's story? It's not clear in my head...

Time and time again, the Developers make a war storyline. I only liked the one during the Summer of 2012, others are just garbage to me. I understand very little of the story, so I end up playing for fun. [:)]

Trollok!!! -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 14:53:17)

Yeah the Infernal War was the best; I feel like the Developers too have been slipping with regards to story. Just look at the poor plot development behind the Dread Plains War. There is absolutely nothing going on; there's a clear goal to control the technology on the Dread Plains but nothing has been done to ensure people fight over the plains themselves.

Ranloth -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 15:02:32)

Because people either can't post a lengthy detailed post, or simply don't care.

http://forums2.battleon.com/f/tm.asp?m=21524931 - I've posted this, back in November. Had one reply which was totally irrelevant to the topic, and as you can see, no one bothered to even reply. You can always ask an AK to bump the thread (or I can if you want?) - since necro bumping results in lock - but I wouldn't expect many replies either.

Rest assured, you're not the only one thinking storyline is either: 1) not decent enough, 2) poorly written/presented, 3) irrelevant to the game, 4) whatever else you think. I've explained it in the thread above, so no point repeating it all here.

Mother1 -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 15:47:30)

When I first started here on epic duel the story line was going nicely. from the frostland war, to the heartbreaker saga, to bionic battlian, ETC. However when Omega started even though we had some short side stories the main storyline seems to have stopped. I would love to see the main story come back and with it the event missions, but as it was said Cindy is working on getting her Degree so I can understand that as well.

Trollok!!! -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 20:09:55)

@Trans: Looking at the inactivity of this and your thread is rather disconcerting; I'd have thought players would care a little more about the storyline. The silence speaks volumes about the player base (At least those on the forums).

@Mother1: I almost forgot about Cindy leaving but like Trans said, there are others who can work on the story. I for one always played for story and I'm sure for others it helps alleviate some of the issues in PvP since it's something else to focus on. Considering Titan created EpicDuel you'd think he has some ideas; I mean, Artix is occasionally dropping in to help with storyline updates in the other games.

Cyber Dream -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 20:12:19)

What story?

King Helios -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 21:49:30)

rofl its a bunch of people fighting in the future

/endstory

Pemberton -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 22:29:44)

Story about bunnies, ants and snowmans fighting lol

GearzHeadz -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/13/2014 23:13:33)

I would love to be able to play for the story. But unfortunately, the story does not get a lot of attention. Not only that but it is also inconsistent and hard to follow. Not to mention the fact that events cannot be replayed or experience by new players, so only older players or people who go and do extensive background research on the story can understand it.

Exploding Penguin -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/14/2014 0:14:11)

Story is too hard to follow. Especially since the logic is entirely messed up where people of the same alignment kill each other and each time you kill someone you always get the same amount of money. You don't even steal it from them; they get money too. Where is this money coming from?

Hard to create an interesting and explainable story that involves the players when the logic is this...illogical.

Dual Thrusters -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/15/2014 21:53:14)

The problem is that the storyline makes less sense to new players as time goes on. Some players might even believe that there is no storyline!

I think it's because the story is linked to events and wars. As all of you know, those two don't stay in the game very long.

New players be like:

"What is the Infernal Mines for? No missions.....so it probably isn't worth my time!"
"Dravax the Harbringer? What's this master he is talking about? Is it Marauder Hulk? Omg so random......"
"Why is a Kangaroo in a spaceship with a City guard? Mwahahahaha, they got blasted! So random......."
"Where did you buy that OP punch thingy?"
"Where are the Health Packs Valestra says she sells? I can't see it in the shop. I'm going to report it as a bug."

When they figure out they missed all those events.

"Where did you get those Light Blades? Oh nvm don't tell me, they we're probably from some war that I missed."

dfo99 -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/16/2014 12:59:07)

i play for same reason that play chess

lionblades -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/16/2014 13:03:03)

Storyline is too confusing for me. I play for 2vs2 at this moment.

Thylek Shran -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/17/2014 15:09:41)

The story of ED (Delta V) is way to fragmented. Some parts are embedded ingame
in missions and a few cut scenes, some parts got removed with rare events, and
other parts was only mentioned in the Design Notes and the forums.

It would not hurt if the story would had a red line to follow but I hope that at first the
broken PVP balance (cores !) does get fixed as it is the backbone of ED.

8x -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/17/2014 15:48:08)

Sometimes I feel like devs are trying to keep up with the AE "standards" and try to give us content updates with different story lines, when they are not necessary. I have always loved ED because of the PvP and the players, never because of the "fun" content. I just wish that they would focus on perfecting PvP aspect of ED and not try to constantly please AE/AQW fans that expect stories. ED is unique and it should stay unique. The more it is turning into AQW, the more it drives me away. I used to love AQW, but completing 10+ boring new missions each week eventually became, well... boring.

Scyze -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/17/2014 16:13:40)

EpicDuel is a PvP game, I don't really expect this game to be releasing new content week-in week-out. I want balance, story and then content. I don't care much about the content, I already am getting as much as I need. If the Developers decide to focus on making the game make more sense, then I'll enjoy the game more.

We have wars. The winner (alignment) wins nothing, they control an area, which only has flags around, nothing special is gained, the area is open to everyone. If Exile/Legion wins something, I expect something dramatic to happen. This, of course, never happens; there is no change that alters the future. It's always the same feeling you get when you win the war or when you're entering the war. Nothing special before or after, other than flags being displayed (Infernal War, 2012).

I really don't want content. I really want the Developers to step up with their stories, and something that changes everything. Winning a war is nothing like winning. Some people were disappointed after the Frysteland event last year (January/February 2013). I understand why.

Honestly, the story is very weak, I like them, but the aftermath is weak - which ruins the war(s). If Exile win a war in the future, I will get annoyed if there are just flags being displayed and everyone being able to access the area. I would like it more if Exile have more control of Delta V, and the aftermath events should get heavily affected by this victory.

Achievements shouldn't be used as a sign of victory, I am not fighting to get an Achievement; I am fighting because I believe in my alignment and I want my alignment to survive, and to succeed in what they believe in! #FREEDOM! Which hasn't been given even after victories.

dfo99 -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/17/2014 21:25:04)

i know that ed have a story, but never read about

Trollok!!! -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/17/2014 21:40:18)

I agree new players probably have the hardest time grasping the story (Dual Thrusters summed it up very nicely and comically xD) but I hope that's something the Devs can rectify in time. And apparently the team is planning on trying to trying to bring some life to the Dread Plains War so maybe we'll have some Infernal War-like hype again. Hopefully they'll take Scyze's idea to heart and make the Exile vs. Legion struggle more rewarding in terms of aftermath.

Xendran -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/17/2014 21:56:35)

Nobody seems to know about or care about the story of epicduel BECAUSE of the fact that it's done in AE style.

I wonder how BigTuna would feel about epicduel if he logged on today.
It's not that the storylines are necessarily bad, but they just don't have any sort of cohesiveness, and seem very unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
AQ pulls it off because AQ's wars were epic when i played in the 2005-2008ish years, and they probably still are today.
Epicduel has had what, one good war?

I bet half the players haven't even seen or heard the name Baelius before.
I don't even read NPC dialogue anymore, let alone story. Missions are all the same so there's no reason not to look the solution to them up on the wiki.

Pemberton -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/18/2014 2:54:11)

The story maker is Cinderella but she stopped or maybe titan fired her.

Xendran -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/18/2014 4:33:53)

It is cindy now. It wasn't always.

One Winged Angel1357 -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/18/2014 11:14:16)

I understand two things about the story line.

One being Tuna and Cindy have different styles because all writers have different styles.
Two is that Tuna left his notes which is where some of the post Tuna story comes from. Descarl came out after Tuna had left but she is still from the mind of BT.

Also for everyone who hasn't already you should give this a once over. =ED= The Storyline

Xendran -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/18/2014 12:10:55)

I find it funny how people laugh at me when i say ED was originally designed for 16+, but they never bother to check how intense some of the story elements are.
Also chairman platinum makes jokes about slave labourers getting mercury poisoning. Also what kid is going to know what an MBA is, or a severence package. Speaking of the severence package line, that's pretty dark too.
He also says "I haven't had this much fun since i bought that failing business, turned it into an orphanage, then burned it to the ground!".
His entire character is also a satire about the state of politics and corporations in America.

Does this sound like a childrens game to you?

EDIT: Also, "Aphrodite's Woe". If it was TRULY a children's game, it's unlikely they would have included the use of Aphrodite because of the fact that kids are likely to google things they havent heard of. They could have used Venus instead, but they went with Aphrodite.

One Winged Angel1357 -> RE: Do you play for story? (2/18/2014 12:27:47)

quote:

As time drew the forces of the Uprising and the Legion closer to war, it became clear that disciplinary action would need to take a back seat to capital punishment. Administrative repercussions for dissent were limited to public flagellation and days spent in the stocks, at first, and executions followed soon thereafter. These horribly antiquated means of crime deterrence put extraordinary pressure on the districts that found themselves under Alydriah Descarl’s metal boot. Some say that her districts in the “Varium Ring” were the first to openly rebel in direct response to the morally devoid governess and her “death squads”.

That is some grade A child reading material right there
