They did this to discourage players being Benedict Arnold's during the war. If you remember the frostland war players changed sides to get both cheevos that each side had to offer. As a result during the infernal war, they made it impossible for you to change sides during the war once you started.
So in all honestly this change compared to the infernal war isn't nearly as harsh.
Also not supported because if they did this once one side is about to win someone would just use varium to shift to the winning side at the last minute and claim the prize that the other side would be able to claim. If anything they need to remove this feature during war events to prevent this cheating.
