Kiyone -> =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/16/2014 20:36:20)

Hello everyone! Now that the Fifth forum tournament has concluded, I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone that participated! It was tough sometimes to schedule duels, but most matches were completed, and we had some truly epic moments. It's been great to do this together with you guys, as a community, and we definitely want to have more tournaments in the future!

But before we get to the part where we ask you all for your inputs, let's see that Hall of Fame!

Alright, if you participated in the tournament, or just watched as it progressed, please comment and give us your feedback! General comments are fine, but please try to be as constructive as possible, to help us continue to develop our protocols and run the tournaments more smoothly in the future!

Here are some prompts:
What did you like the most about this tournament?

What did you not like as much about this tournament?

What did you think of the double-elimination style bracket? Good? Bad? Confusing?

What did you think of the time limit for the duels?

Is there anything you would change about the tournament setup?

Is there anything you'd like for us to keep doing?

Feel free to address anything else about the tournament as well. Thank you!

Before making a post, please keep this in mind.

Constructive Criticism

  • What is it?
Constructive criticism is being able to process and offer your own thoughts and opinions in order to give courteous and friendly feedback. This is done by explaining what you like and dislike, while at the same time providing feedback that is useful. This is what separates constructive feedback from ranting/complaining and flaming.

  • Does it help? How?
Yes! Constructive criticism helps because not only are you giving feedback about what you don't like about a quest/event, but you're also giving feedback about what you DID like in the quest. Feedback could include on such topics as statistics, more dialogue, more explanatory cutscenes, more fights - everything that quests or events would normally include. This gives the staff a better idea on future improvements.

  • Example of Constructive Criticism:
"I didn't partularly like this war because it felt too empty. To have made it better, I think the staff could have had a 50% cutscene to unlock rather than just a shop to progress the storyline. As it was, I personally was a little dissapointed that this war felt more rushed than previous wars, however I do understand that the staff had a lot on their plate when making this release. That said, I greatly enjoyed the boss fight, the animations and art fit perfectly with the song that was playing in the background. So while not one of the best wars DF have done, I still enjoyed it. Thank you, DF staff!"

  • Example of Unconstructive Criticism:
"I didn't like this war at all. What were the staff thinking? The items in the shop were ugly, overpriced and were bugged!! No cutscene? That was never done before and it is not how it should be done ever. Seriously, doesn't the staff ever listen to us?! The boss fight was too hard and took forever to beat :( And there was no sound. I dont think the staff even care anymore. Best war ever /sarcasm I hate this game D:<!"

  • The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/17/2014 11:40:02)

I think what I liked most about this tournament was that it was timed very well. Water has long been considered the very worst element in the game both for farming due to lack of offence and for competing in PvP due to a lack of a way to make effective use of its energy, and one of the greatest advancements for OverSoul in 2014 was the sort of renaissance Water characters have undergone. The character suggestion contest in particular brought us two of the best Water characters in Human Fisher and Soul Wyvern in addition to Year of the Horse at the beginning of the year, Water's second Legendary character. These factors made Water the best choice for an elemental tournament at this time and helped to bolster the element's rise to grace by getting people to think seriously about how to use Water characters again.

It's hard to think of anything I didn't like as much that could be improved. It was a little unfortunate that so many players forfeited or had to be disqualified, but that wasn't anyone's fault and in most cases there were fair excuses involved such as prohibitive glitches or unforeseen departures for vacations. I suppose just a bit more clarity could help though, as generally more than 48 hours were permitted to complete duels when both parties were available and in the process of dueling/trying to meet up, so the rule became more to the point of someone being disqualified if they weren't heard from for 48 hours. I thought this was handled well, but perhaps to have lack of contact being explicitly stated as the grounds for disqualification it would be more clear. There were some questions regarding the tiebreaker rules but I understand that it was mentioned that they would be redone for future tournaments. :)

The double-elimination style bracket is good, but with regards to the final it probably shouldn't be redone in the event that the previously undefeated finalist from the Upper Bracket loses, just to remain consistent with the outcome of the Fire tournament in which Clinton needed only to win one final match. This makes sense in that the finalist from the Lower Bracket has to win more matches to compensate for their loss and neither finalist is essentially eliminated in that the defeated player is still the runner up. This wasn't an issue during the Earth and Water tournaments as during each the defeated finalist made their way up through the Lower Bracket, however it should probably be made explicitly clear as to whether the final is to be done as per the Fire tournament or if reforms to how it was done before are put in place.

48 hours was a good time limit, just a clarification on whether that time limit is with regards to being in contact or actually dueling would be good.

As far as things I might change, perhaps for defensive elements such as Water and a couple elements that have yet to be done (Light and Neutral), best two out of three matches and/or single elimination as per the Shadow Tournament could make things run a bit more smoothly or faster. I think it came up before that certain limitations could be implemented with regards to dual-elemental characters or cards such as CC Iron Hide/Corruption and although I've been a beneficiary of such measures not having been in place before, I would support such restrictions going forward for the sake of the spirit of selected elements.

I'd like for the staff to keep arranging tournaments as they're great competitive fun and help bring enthusiasm to the game during slower times of development and great work was done organizing all five of these tournaments and seeing them through to the end in spite of the odd obstacles/necessary disqualifications in each of the five tournaments. This was great fun and I'd happily participate in one of these tournaments again provided I'm available. [:)]

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/17/2014 12:01:52)

I agree with the 2 out 3 for the healing and staling elements such as neutral and light.

    Double elimination is good.

Banning dual elemental in the pure elemental contest would be a good idea since the shadow fire and water tournament were all dominated by them.

Doing a dual element contest at the end would be awesome since the best dual character can pretty much only be beat by the other dual characters.

Staying focus to the 48 hour time limit has to be a must maybe a day extra for extreme circumstances though.

    EDIT

How about doing a element tournament then a theme tournament then element it gives more time for new characters to be added that could be used in the element tournaments?

Bionic Bear -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/17/2014 20:48:30)

Hehe, I was one of the people who had to forfeit (exams). I apologize again to you, TFP, for making you wait those days!
I would definitely like for the tournaments to continue, they're always great fun.
Two days is good for a duel to be done, just to cover all the bases (such as if one of the participants has to do something that day). As Gorillo said, however, if a player does not respond in two days, then they should be sent a PM by whoever's moderating the tournament (be it Skurge or Kiyone or other) saying that they have one day to respond and explain their situation. If they do not respond, then they can be disqualified to prevent unnecessary elongation of the tournament.
I'll be looking forward to the neutral tournament, mostly because I have a character of decent level for that element. It shall be great fun!

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/17/2014 21:02:27)

Since he said neutral tournament which tournament is the next one?

I have a level 20 neutral and lighting but not a light.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/18/2014 14:24:56)

^You have a few months to train a Light character though. Don't worry they're a pretty fast element to train especially if you CC some Holy Strikes and if not then Retributions are nice in a pinch for farming too.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/18/2014 14:35:54)

Holy strike makes 5 hits near impossible though.

Also how about theme tournament set some kind of rule like a specific race or only using one type of character for a tournament.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 13:00:19)

Hmm I suppose they could make it a tad more difficult to fit a combo under 21 energy at times, but interspersed throughout a deck they can be quite effective, especially if the character in question has some attack cards under 500 to begin with as most Light characters do. My general Light farming CC is 1 Neutral 525 and 4 Holy Strikes. Much of the time I do have to settle for a 3-hit combo on a lot of characters because most Light characters have a lot of non-attack cards like Heal, Might, Defend, etc but those 3-hits can still easily do ~2000 damage which adds up pretty fast. Rainbowtheus is an exception though in that it can often pull off 5-hits with Holy Strikes due to its Sacrifices and some low attack cards with 10 attack cards in total, Love Machine and Gold Lycan are pretty reliable too. For other characters you just smack with Holy Strikes and win eventually.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 13:06:31)

5 hit combos make farming easer they average 3000 damage and get stun off though.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 15:11:27)

Right but with 3-hit combos you don't have to fix your hand so you can do them more often than 5-hit combos which can be difficult to pull off especially if your char has, say, under 8 attack cards to begin with which many Light chars do.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 17:03:15)

I don't have many high level light characters and the ones I do have low attack cards making it just best to run the 5 hits and get the stun and extra 5 hit to save time.

We need more people to give feedback on this forum a lot of people complained but yet none of them is commenting on the problem they had :(

I had an idea it wouldn't be much use since TFP won pretty much all the tournaments but doing one thats the winners and 2nd place winners of all the element tournament to come up with the Overall Champion.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 17:12:54)

Plus Beck is gone so if it were just active people who'd won one of these it'd be just me and Clinton atm and 2 people doesn't really make a tournament lol. I like the idea of rank tournaments after the elemental tournaments though, so like an Apprentice Tournament, a Veteran Tournament, a Master Tournament, and a Legendary Tournament. Or maybe we could cycle through the elements again or some such. A few possibilities. :D

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 17:21:13)

We need some new characters first can you list some new characters that can beat the best characters from the first cycle of tournaments? Rank tournaments good I'd like the AK to come up with the theme based characters forces us to adapt to the situation.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 17:26:54)

I believe Xmas Elf, Skexis, Void Rebirth, and Tyrant Moose would've been legitimate threats in each of the first four tournaments as for Water we just finished it so it doesn't really apply.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/20/2014 17:45:49)

Yeah just those characters which is pretty broken with 2 being perma rare and 1 being seasonal and also with dual elements maybe getting banned from regular tournament you couldn't even use them.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/21/2014 11:50:17)

That's true, but if dual-elemental characters are banned then Poison Drake couldn't win the Shadow tournament. Additionally, Love Weaver was very much a dark horse in the Fire Tournament and with Dragzirra, Godzirra, and even Griffon in the mix it would have that much more competition even with Mana Guardian banned. Tyrant Moose isn't rare or dual-elemental and would pose a serious threat although Astor and Erfreirung can't measure up to Cosoma Titan imo. I do believe that Xmas Elf potentially could though with its extra energy supply and enough native shields to exhaust its supply of Ice energy after CCing a few Shatters, but it wouldn't matter if dual-elementals were banned.

So if dual-elemental characters were banned and the Ice, Shadow, Fire, and Earth tournaments were re-done, the winning characters for all but Ice would be likely to change and that's before considering new characters we'll probably receive for those elements by the time the Light, Neutral, and Lightning tournaments would be finished.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/21/2014 15:59:30)

Mana guaridian pretty much dominitated the fire tournament even going to the finals without even have CC equipped by several players.

The elements are already set to recycle around once we finish neutral light and energy tournaments.

The Finnish Phoenix -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/21/2014 20:20:13)

Yours, Heavenspawn's, Beck's, and Axel's Mana Guardians all eventually lost to pure fire characters with CC's though. I'm not denying that Mana Guardian's a pretty good character, but I was never convinced of its dominance when Riniti, The Jop, Kiyone, and Clinton all did quite well with Weavers and BJEBLE and Elder Dragonslayer got great results with Pyre Witch. I do think it's interesting though that Evil Jim had such a mediocre showing for Signeous and Beck who are both extremely good players (although Beck did rotate between quite a few Fire Level 20's including fairly handicapped ones like Ogre Mage). Not sure what some of the other players used though.

In hindsight, the Fire tournament was probably the best one of these yet. It's a shame I didn't participate but I missed sign-ups.

clintonian -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/21/2014 20:40:23)

Yea fire tourney was the best you had little to no DC's and every duel was pretty good.I just hope we have enough people for another tourney i would say do another one late this year like Christmas or Halloween when more people than usual will be on.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/21/2014 23:48:26)

Fire was the only other tournament I took I and it was pretty solid I didn't have as many boost back there but first form of sword was a pretty solid character even though I didn't have it level 20.

Whats the comparison of the amount of participants in the other tournament compared to water though?

It comes down to outdated deck vs the newer decks I guess and dual elements being harder to CC could be a draw back but for the next tournaments the best characters haven't changed much in a while Queen, D monk/monk genesis warrior could be a threat/ Volt engineer.

the warden -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/22/2014 16:53:25)

I enjoyed the Earth tournment a lot.
And Water one was fun xd

BJEBLE -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/23/2014 1:41:24)

My favorites were Fire and Earth. I think I kind of missed out on the Shadow tourney because I didn't have the right cards for my Lich to CC so it wasn't as good as it could have been. Always next time though.
The duo-element ban is kind of a shame, my Neutral main is a hybrid. I would assume Dire Monk wouldn't count as a hybrid because it doesn't have a charge card. I guess I'll finish up my Dire Monk training then.

Gorillo Titan -> RE: =OS= Fifth PvP Forum Tournament Feedback (7/23/2014 1:57:13)

The dual ban would help stop the OPness of dual elemental characters but having a dual tournament when its all said and down means you'll still get a chance to play with them.

Since all the forms of Griffon are free and all three are pretty strong can we do a griffon tournament?
