Scyze -> Is 15 seconds per turn good enough? (10/21/2015 7:59:47)

EpicDuel is a turn based game which gives players 15 seconds each turn. 15 seconds can be a long/short time frame depending on the situation but I think it's pretty short. Back when I played I used to think it was enough to make decisions and play accordingly. Basically, I now feel like I played EpicDuel just by reacting to what people did, and not by looking ahead. I don't honestly know how the game currently is and I doubt I will take the time to learn the game again, but do you guys think 15 seconds is enough to make good decisions?

I used to have a set mind for everything someone did. If I was against a strength Bounty Hunter, I knew that after they used Massacre and the next attack, I have a high chance of winning since they're running dry of attacks. So I had to play defensive for the first 4 turns before transitioning to be more offensive. There wasn't really a lot of players/builds that made them play differently than the build's purpose. It just feels like playing EpicDuel was like reading a line of code and acting to what it said.

I'm imagining using my TLM build that had a 95%+ win rate but strength builds were always a brainless build with just pressing a few buttons in order.

So to the main points:
  • Do you think 15 seconds is long enough to make good decisions?
  • Will making turns longer make you rage more if you're against someone who's afk?
  • Do you spend all 15 seconds thinking about your attacks or do you just use the first skill that comes to your mind?
  • Do you think making turns longer will make the game more strategic?

For the final question, I personally don't believe anything will happen. ED is targeted at younger people who probably won't think that carefully in a game. I mean, making turns longer might help some people who want to play it smart but there were always people who look 2-3 seconds to make a decision and still ended up winning. I just read a thread of these nuke builds so I don't believe anything will happen. Maybe if there are less aggressive builds and more tank builds, then obviously the longer time frame will help. I'm just curious to know what you guys might be thinking.

Just want to point out that tank builds may not necessarily be more strategic than aggressive builds - they are often just looping different skills. In fact, in my experience, you need a lot of strategic foresight to play aggressive builds well.

Regarding this suggestion, I'm personally of two minds. On one hand, it'd be nice to have less time pressure when I'm making decisions, especially since I limit myself to ten seconds to prevent lag from making me skip a turn. On the other, that short time is usually enough for me to predict what the opponent may do and how I should pre-empt it, though I often act based on how skilled I think the opponent is rather than his optimal course of action. And that judgment - that attitude of risk-taking - is in part affected by the short time I have to make the decision.

Extending the turn time to 20 seconds is not a bad idea, but it's also not one I'd actively support. I'd probably just shrug and play on - it's difficult to know what effect five more seconds could have in advance. But extending the turn time beyond that is unnecessary and will probably bring more frustration than benefits, IMO.

Back then I actually cared a lot more. Fights were a lot closer in general and when I felt like going tryhard I would use the desktop calculator app on my computer to do really quick calculations of chances of blocks and other similar things.

Now I'm finding it less and less necessary. Fight's normally aren't that close anymore so it doesn't really make a big deal. As for spending time to think of how you are going to plan your next moves in a battle, there's generally just a bible that a player can follow so I can still play reflexively and near optimally in many scenarios without having to spend too much time thinking.

I believe that the current time frame is good enough. I've played a lot of other turn-based MMOs, and I've noticed that many of them use somewhere between 20 and 30 seconds between turns. Although this does give you more time to make a decision, it does make it a little unrealistic as well as frustrating when you've got an AFK on your hands. I like EpicDuel's 15 seconds because it forces you to make a decision crunched under time, which is similar to how you would decide things if you really were in a fight. Thus it adds another realism counterbalance to ED's rather surreal and fictitious nature.

Hey Scyze, glad to see you around. Great to see a nice post around here once again.

Regarding the topic, I had like to state my experience.
I think time has always been a factor due to the amount of ideas and strategies I could make in that time frame. Initially, when I retrain and make a build, I tend to have a standard strategy. If the main one fails, I complement with a sub main a, b, c, etc. I think not only for the present but for the future of the battle as well. What I have found to be the greatest flaw in my game style are crits, deflections, stuns and blocks predictions. When that flaw comes into play, I see myself forced to focus myself solely on trying to beat my foe's build and strategies before mine run out and I have got no chance to win anymore.
Brain processing is something I have done since I started playing this game. That's what makes me love EpicDuel tbh, you don't necessarily spam skills like in AQW to beat a monster in a critical situation, you need to save as much energy and use the best skills your build has to actually survive it.
I think 15 seconds are fine, then again I wouldn't mind 5 seconds more to think a bit more and in case of lag spike as well( it isn't often but can happen anyway).

Note: This ain't the staffs' perspective but mine. By no means take it as the Devs' word.
