The best way to know which weapons and armor are right for you is to compare a list of each equipment piece for your level, or maybe a few levels ahead if the stats are worth the wait.

May I recommend getting all the defense and health you can get your hands on? it will keep you alive on /shatterskullbridge, the fastest place to get experience and one of the fastest places to get gold without dungeon keys.
The dungeon of /skulltower is by far the fastest way to get gold once you're strong enough to get your Nightlocke weapon (level 13+); on a run where you collect all the loot it gives about 2k gold per run.
Another gold-farming option that may or may not be better than /shatterskullbridge, because it is RNG luck dependant, is /doomwoodforest.
1. camp tent-less by the giant skeleton's left arm.
2 wait for the enraged spirit wolf to spawn by killing the normal shadow wolves that spawn in the spirit's place by the arm
3. gather three enraged spirits from the spirit wolf for max stack
4. sell them all to artix at the entrance to /doomwoodforest for 200 gold each.
/Doomwoodforest is my favorite place; it requires little mental effort, so it helps with concentrating on other things
Recommended server for farming: Red Dragon, most populated.
Recommended time for farming: When America is awake

I'll give a short example of how I determine what to wear:
Recommended Boots: Ashen Plate Boots (level 9)
Why:
*good health and defense for surviving the mobs at /shatterskullbridge (25 health and 37 defense)
*it is the only level 9 boots out of two level 9 boots in-game that aren't rare
*both of the level 10 boots in-game are rare
*there are no level 11 boots
*the only level 12 boots are the alpha knight boots ii which are rare for many
*the only level 13 boots are the pumpkin lord boots which are a seasonal rarity
*there are no level 14 boots
So the Ashen Plate Boots will serve you for a long time [:)] That is what we need.
