Pokerus doubles your EV gain while you have it. I thought they'd gotten rid of it! Wow. :o

EV stands for “Effort Value.” They determine what stats your Pokémon gets upon levelling up and are gained from battling any Pokémon you come across that award Experience points. Each stat is given +1 for every 4 EVs you put into it. The maximum amount of EVs you can give a stat is 255.

Beating a Patrat would give all Pokémon that participated in the battle +1 Effort Value to Attack.
Beating a Frillish would give all Pokémon that participated in the battle +1 Effort Value to Sp. Defence.

Each Pokemon awards a different type of EV, so you can look here to find a good list in SM: https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-sm/ev/hp.shtml (click across the top to see the other stats)

255 / 4 = 63.75

Obviously a stat can't have .75 added to it, so this is rounded off by the game down to 63, which is the same addition you'd get from 252 EVs. Therefore you're wasting 3 EVs if you put anymore than 252 into any one stat. Simple right? Okay, now lets apply this to the fact you can have 510 EVs on a single Pokemon.

510 / 4 = 127.5

Because the maximum amount a stat can be added to is 63, you end up with 1.5 of a possible stat left over. Again, .5 of a stat doesn't exist in the game so this is rounded down to 1 being left over. Therefore no matter what you do 2 of your 510 of EVs are going to be wasted. If we look at my Volcarona again you'll notice it has 252/252/4, equivalent to 508 effective EVs.

With all this in mind we can say in simple terms; Don't put more than 252 EVs into any stat.

Thanks. I never bothered with Ivs, EVs or the like. I just trained my pokemon like/as friends.

Iv'e just changed my pokemon breeding. It was Ditto+'karp, but since I got a honedge in a wondertrade, and that the line's shiny form looks cool, I'm breeding them now.
No eggs hatched yet, but I'll get htere.
Eventually.
I hope.

Onyx Darkmatter -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (6/17/2017 20:19:38)

I forget that this is a thread.

Anyways, Gamefreak has confirmed that there's going to be a Pokemon Core Series Game in the making for the Nintendo Switch, but we'll be getting more news about that next year. This definitely helps me convince myself on getting a Nintendo Switch.

peacemaker -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (6/18/2017 14:04:15)

Wondertrade update - added a flareon to my dex. Just need the fairy type for the full eevee - dex.

ShadowMoon -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (11/4/2017 11:02:42)

13 days til USUM
rainbow team rocket revealed and an information flood incoming.
also this thread has been dead for away to long

peacemaker -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (11/6/2017 15:31:50)

Iv'e recently wondertraded in a foreign shiny ditto with the destiny knot . Currently breeding it with a home bred litten.

What are the chances of getting a shiny litten please?

Superemo -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (11/7/2017 12:55:09)

^: Same as it would be for a regular foreign Ditto (3/2048, 1/512 with the Shiny Charm). Shiny status isn't something that can be bred for outside of the Masuda method.

peacemaker -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (11/8/2017 15:52:01)

3/2048? I thought that it was 1/8192.

No shiny litten yet. WHen I DO get him/her, I'll evolve them into the shiny incineroarand have him/her as a backup - main.

Superemo -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (11/9/2017 11:37:26)

Using a Pokemon from a foreign country is what's commonly referred to as the Masuda method. It effectively provides five bonus "rerolls" to the check for shiny status, meaning the odds are higher. Additionally, the base chance of a shiny doubled in gen 6, to 1/4096.
Ergo, since the five "rerolls" give you six total opportunities, the total odds are 6/4096, which reduces to 3/2048.

peacemaker -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (11/10/2017 11:16:01)

THanks. Still no luck with the shiny litten yet.
I'll get there though.

Who here's seen the new USUM trailer(s) with ninikyu's Z - move in?!

I thought that Gamefreak limited EV 252 to a stat in Generation VI. Was I wrong in thinking that?

Don't put more than 252 EVs into any stat.

Again, I read on Bulbapedia that anything over 252 per stat was impossible.

On a less related note, my dream pokemon would be:
- Steel and Ice type.
- Sturdy ability
- All moves limited to are Splash, Flash, Double Team, and Safeguard.
- HARDCODED FOR ONE HP ala Shedinja.
- Low speed stat (nanoscopic balancing factor).
- Very low physical and special defense stats (irrelevant, as it only has one hp).
- Very low physical and special attack (irrelevant; no direct attacks).

On an unrelated note, does anyone wish that Gamefreak had released Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Yellow (to match the core game expansions RBY, GSC, and RSE)?

peacemaker -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (1/28/2018 8:28:02)

Well, Iv'e finally got a micro SD card that's double the previous one's capacity for my new new 3DS XL, so I can now go and get USUM.

And then transfer the hunreds of pokemon into the games.

But I can also get G/S/C aswell now.

Digital X -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (1/28/2018 10:01:50)

I have Sun and slowly getting along with that. Just beat the Volcano Trial (I can't remember the actual name)

As always with Pokemon I'm keeping my whole party the same level, have done since Yellow. I love the riding Pokemon ability, such a great help!

Is there a major difference in the Ultra versions compared to standard?

ShadowMoon -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (1/29/2018 11:30:07)

i hate choice items, they lock your mon down way to much

peacemaker -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (2/3/2018 9:33:27)

Currently resetting my OR game to get a shiny 'dex.

So far, Iv'e moved into town and I'm about to leave. No shiny Torchic yet. I'm patient though.

Question though:- How do you restart (normal, not ultra) moon please, (without deleting the data/file and re downloading it,) since the only pokemon on that file is a yungoos (sp?) called "trump"?

'Nuff said.

With (normal) moon, I'll just do a normal playthrough to get the box legendary, put the pokemon into the bank, then into either Sun, US or UM.

As for getting G/S/C, WHen Iv'e got them, I'll work towards re - getting my old G/S/C squad(s) that I had before the games became unplayable. (a shame, since the Crystal cartridge was apparently pre - owned, since amongst the other pokes it had in/on it was a Mew.)

I think that the final crystal squad was pikachu, lugia, venusaur, mew, (held item, portrait mail with my lottery numbers on it.(don't pleay any more)) and 2 others Iv'e forgotten.

toidiedud -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (10/17/2018 20:58:46)

Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are coming in soon in a few weeks. Its a bummer I don't really want to cause parts of the new stuff look really neat but its really designed for Pokemon Go players more than anything else so ehhh.

Hopefully next years Pokemon is exciting. Since Let's Go is the 3DS engine but beefed up so hopefully next years will be more impressive of a jump since its a new engine.

Zephyr3337 -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (10/19/2018 8:41:46)

Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee don't really look all the appealing to me at this moment in time. I probably will end up getting Let's go Eevee in order to keep up my thing of being up to date and playing all Pokemon games though (not to mention Eevee is adorable, and quite frankly much better than Pikachu imo.) Who knows, I might actually really enjoy it.

First things first though, gotta get myself a Switch.

Rheannon -> RE: Pokemon Thread 108.5: thread 108 met with a terrible fate (8/5/2019 19:52:50)

Sadly I don't see myself getting a Switch for Let's Go or Sword and Shield.
