Re-posting here as was originally in the wrong forum - thanks for linking to the right one Rorshach.
Allow searching the forums without logging in with some restrictions to prevent search spam:
In the interest of not using an excessive amount of server resources and costing a fortune to maintain add a 60 second wait time between searches if not logged in an maybe tie it to the IP address of whoever is attempting the search along with adding one of those 'are you a robot' checks each time for good measure.
Usable by a human if they are looking for a single thing and don't need to post something but difficult for robot spammers.
An alternate way of viewing this suggestion is having different tiers of accounts:
Guests: Guest tier - Visit the forum in a read only state and able to search one every 60 seconds & have to complete a captcha for each search.
New Member: Normal tier - Limited to where they can post & what they can post.
Member: Normal tier - Less restrictions then a new member.
Moderator: Special tier - Seen around the forums, promotion for members
Admin: Special tier - I expect there is an admin forum account owned by artix entertainment staff
