Maelstrom doesn't show it killing you when it actually kills you. Yeti Fury is not a melee attack, when the core Tentacle Prison is used, the move is still able to be used (so it recognizes this), but it will skip the turn and render the core useless as well as a nice long turn lag. I know this isn't a melee attack because I tested this with the Bio Borg.
