Hi everyone. I have a quick question about the various character customisation options we have available to us. Why is it that we have to spend Dragon Coins to change our character's name and gender, when every other aspect of character customisation is essentially free provided you have a Dragon Amulet? As best I understand it, these aspects of our characters have no impact on gameplay - unlike base classes, which I do understand having to pay to change - so why aren't they like the other purely cosmetic customisation options?

Because it is a major change, from some points of view?

It's fluff, yes, but people are willing to pay for fluff, and it's not something people do all the time, so making it pay-to-do is eh.

Plus, there's in-universe difficulty too! Surgery (or flesh-molding magicks) costs a lot, and you really want a lawyer with you when you file name-changing paperwork!

In old AdventureQuest, you can get a name change for free... if you wander into it in Death's Realm. It's essentially a time warp.

I suppose you could say that, since you can replay quests with your new name, changing your name is retroactive. So you're tinkering with time on a massive scale! Your poor alternates want to focus on fighting the Hyperhydra and escaping the Matrix, not adjusting to their pasts being rewritten! No wonder Doomknight-you-version-whatever keeps scamming us...

Love your sig, by the way. Lovecraft FTW!

Ok, sure it's fluff. But it feels, to me at least, slightly unreasonable to require so much for something that does not functionally change the game. Especially with how much it might mean to people like me. And in game reasons are fine and all - but only if you could do it with gold. DCs are a meta currency, they're not really a thing that exists in universe. Sorry, maybe I'm just being unreasonably invested in this. But I made my character nearly a decade ago, when I was a young boy. And I'm neither of those things now, so I'd really like to be able to update my character without losing the near decade of progress. And thanks for liking the signature, lol. I'm a massive Cthulhu Mythos fan.

Yeesh, that's rough. I'm sorry to say it, but since gender changes IRL aren't very common, there isn't a huge priority in most modern media on reflecting them/making them an option. If you make a character with a gender, there aren't many reasons for most people to change it.

I suppose that, since the change is retroactive, a metacurrency makes sense... but unlike ACs, dragoncoins ARE recognized in-universe. It could represent extreme expense, but I see why you'd expect it to be possible with a "token large sum" like 1000 gold or something.

On the bright side, sometimes people do play as characters as the opposite gender/as a binary gender, so you could think of it like... well.

I personally always enjoyed the "Players are to PCs what gods are to avatars" angle, so while I like to think of my Epicduel character as me in a dystopia, my MQ/DF/AQ/AQW/AQ3d main is my Avatar, created from my sense of humor and sent to Lore to defend it. That's why he has no parents, and why his sense of humor is better than mine (as well as why he so often makes mistakes I wouldn't or fails to perform at a debate I'd crush): Because he's my metaphysical son, who I sync with to lend metaphysical 'weight' in combat. I can't control his choices or speak for him, but I have his back (and can 'nudge' him during key choices), thus canon-izing audience limited-omniscience and making my lack of presence feel fitting.

Obviously, this isn't a thing for everyone, but I hope you find this viewpoint helpful. Either way, I hope you can continue to enjoy the game (and story)!
