It is the worst damage type since it locks out 2 stats and has the shallowest pool of weapons. Why does everything get a melee/magic toggle and leave ranged out? At least make ranged rely purely on Dex. This would make rangers their own thing. Its tiring being a budget warrior/mage.

Legendary Ash -> RE: Ranged is not a competitive damage type (12/31/2019 17:33:26)

From its design, Ranged trades stat damage for BtH, it gives double the amount of BtH compared to Str/Int/Cha but gets 1/5 damage from Dex and 4/5 from Str.
If the Devs went about to make Dex and Str formulas the same for stat damage and BtH, they would be removing a flavor of attack type from the game, which is for Warriors the ability to choose between Melee and Ranged weapons for stat damage or BtH if their Str and Dex are not the same.

To see how Melee compares to Ranged through special proc rates, input the following formulas into Desmos calculator, note to view 20% proc as an example, look at .8 on the x axis.
Melee (x(.65(50+38.5))+((1-x).85*.885(100+10/(1-x)))/1.1
Ranged (x(.8(50+38.5*.2))+((1-x).85*.885(100+10/(1-x)))/1.1

I do recognize that Ranged weapons are particularly lacking in variety namely in special proc rates and status conditions compared to Melee and Magic weapons.
Mastercraft sets from more recent years have attempted to cater to more than one build in terms of attack types, they are still the primary source of items with status conditions next to Frostval season's weapons.

There is another thread called Stat Balance Project - With Spreadsheets where this has been discussed and they are working on it.

Rangers deal less damage than warriors and lack the burst of mages, but they are the most efficient damage dealers in the game and excel in long fights. Rangers are therefore "competitive." It also doesn't matter if the weapon pool is a little bit more shallow, as there are still plenty of bows to go around.
