It's been emphasized more recently how connected opposing concepts are in Lore, so this Necro could be looking for that connection with this artifact. Either reversing it or maybe finding it's 'opposite' perhaps.

It's always interesting to see depth and development in familiar npcs, and the compass-based dialogue is highly welcome. I enjoy quests where monsters are inflicted with unusual effects - like last Frostval's On the Move or Phalanx - so kudos for the new status. Also, the Strangers used some interesting terms - fleshcraft, subversion through resonance, infusion of resonant shadow into servants - that make me very interested in the future necromancer update.
