Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse

Hey there, heroes!

One more week has passed, and I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe!

Last time, in Book 3's main story, the massive Tytan that emerged from the Swordhaven rift began attacking the city, cleaving through it with beams of light, threatening to bring the war to an abrupt and shining end. As you gathered to discuss plans with Jaania, Queen Victoria, and Melissa, the castle itself came under attack, including the very tower you were in!

After fighting off the elementals and creatures takign advantage of the new breach, you convinced Jaanai to unleash her magic to protect the city and its people before it's too late- but before she could cast her spell, the tower was hit once again by the Tytan's onslaught.

This week, we pick up immediately after that cliffhanger. Something must be done- if the castle even still stands.

If you're caught up with Book 3's main story, head to Queen Victoria in Book 3 Swordhaven, and then to your faction's Greenguard Alliance camp to play this week's quest: Collapse!

Completing this week's quest will also very slightly increase the drop rate of Defender Medals from Greenguard Alliance waves

Also this week, there is a new Dragon Coin promotion available until May 4th! Get 25% more Dragon Coins when you make a non-DoomKnight/non-Dragon Amulet Dragon Coin bundle purchase from now until May 4th.

This promotion has been retroactively applied for all applicable Dragon Coin purchases since the start (midnight server time) of Thursday, April 16th (In other words, all purchases yesterday and today have had this bonus applied!).

Next week, our Book 3 re-imagined project begins digging into the meat of Book 3! We are aiming to have the entire Book 3 Sandsea story adjusted. This includes Rose Fort through Sands of Eternity, as well as providing a story bridge for seeking out the Vind. (Also some general bug fixes if there is time!)

Main story quests truly never miss a beat. Whenever a new one is released it always feels like such an event!

spoiler:

That was some spell. I think if Warlic himself attempted anything that big on his own, it surely would have overloaded him. Makes me wonder what these "consequences" could entail.

And it looks like the Hero still hasn't figured out that Victoria is Cinquefoil, even despite the wig coming off at last? I wouldn't imagine a blue beret making that much of a difference. Still, it was a very nice quiet moment between her and the Hero. I'm quite curious to see what's next for her when this is all over.

Another superb release!

Lord Alsvinich -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/18/2020 0:48:08)

Damn I love this so much

Primate Murder -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/18/2020 1:29:18)

Is the dialogue the same for all camps? It seems to be for the Golden Hand and the Vind, but I don't have anyone in the Rose.

Dratomos -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/18/2020 7:09:05)

Another excellent main story quest. While it is a little bummer that these come usually once a month, I rather have these quality quests than three not-so-great quests per month.

spoiler:

I am also interested to see that Jaania's mirror is still a part of this storyline. It felt kinda dropped after Timelines.

Jay -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/18/2020 7:19:04)

I always look forward to main story quests, and yet again this one didn't disappoint. [:D] Looking forward to seeing how this impacts future events... both the immediate future, and the distant.

@Flabagast:
spoiler:

Hmm, I was under the impression that the recent Cinquefoil rewrite allowed it to be more open-ended as far as knowing Cin's true identity, at least some of the dialogue suggested as much to me. I interpreted the hero not reacting to Queen Victoria's "reveal" as more confirmation that they already had realised the connection between Cin and Victoria, not that they still didn't realise it, as it was very apparent in this release.

FMan -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/18/2020 12:24:55)

Excellent storyline release!
Fun quest , story and nice item in the end :)

ghostquartet -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/18/2020 22:12:18)

spoiler:

When Jaania cast that spell I was like "wig," and then Robina actually did it lol

Flabagast -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/19/2020 6:20:55)

@Jay
spoiler:

Yeah, I figured that it was either the Hero being completely oblivious or just deciding not to bring up that they had actually known for a while. I suppose it's fair to say it was a confirmation of the latter. I guess I just didn't see it that way at the time. :P

Chaosweaver Amon -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/19/2020 11:01:16)

Main storyline quests always get me hyped for the week.
spoiler:

Jaania seems very concerned about that spell...is it just because of how intensely powerful it was, or something to do with its effects? I have a sneaking suspicion that the "consequences" are direr than the hero or Vitoria seem to be taking to heart. Could it be just a colossal dome of the magic ice the hero was frozen in? It's a loose guess, but it was strong enough to secure a human being for five years; who's to say a giant hunk of it couldn't protect a whole city for a while?

As for the hero knowing/not knowing that Cinquefoil is Victoria...I think it's pretty apparent that they do. I imagine there was never any "big reveal" because of a lack of good timing. It's a pretty obvious connection, and I can't see anywhere in the recent storyline that would allow for a blatant reveal of something that predictable. Not without seeming kind of hokey and forced, at least. I think this was the best way to handle it.

I'm so ready to see how this plays out...there's so much we don't know yet, and so much to theorize about. It really could go anywhere, and I'm stoked for it.

BlackwingMF -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/19/2020 19:24:50)

At the end of the newly released quest in the DC shop, if you look at the description of the new amulet it kind of hints at the possible effects of what Jaania did, as reference to "the pebble". Likely it will have similar effects on something else and that's what she's worried about. That would be my guess.

mds2006 -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/19/2020 22:03:01)

spoiler:

it'd be really great if that was just an ordinary magic spell, except powerful, and it turns out there are no "consequences" or whatever for casting it, and Jaania just became even more of a stressed, nervous, paranoid wreck for literally no reason in the end.

anime_rpg -> RE: =DF= April 17th Design Notes: Book 3: The End of Magic: Collapse (4/22/2020 13:58:04)

Might as well do spoilers as most others are.

spoiler:

Cinquefoil's dialogue has been reworked but it still leaves it that the hero doesn't recognise her. This is then confirmed in The Gala where the hero says how long it is since he has seen Princess Victoria and she is surprised. The dialogue isn't in a *nudge**nudge**wink**wink* kind of way but that she actually is surprised the hero still doesn't recognise her (which I am very much surprised as well.

Also as BlackwingMF points out, the item in the shop really points to other things being enchanted and there being consequences, which will likely propel Jaania further but equally could be used as yes there is a consequence but the consequence of not doing it was all of Swordhaven being destroyed.

Just rereading the dialogue for Are Rocks Evil? and it reminds me how amazing that quest is and what great stories Verly and Tomix/Dove come up with.

Edit: Whoops it was BlackwingMF.

It's also the regular drop, I assume her tampering with the core, in addition to that large usage of Mana might have reflected onto the environment?
